I have a silly question brought to mind by the cat treat post - just being diagnosed and trying to learn about all of this...What about shampoo and conditioner products with wheat protein in them? Can they make a celiac sick? I know the lady said that she had a reaction to the hair spray, which I can understand with it being airborne - but what about things that come into contact with the skin?

Hi!

Personally, I break out in bad skin rashes when I use wheat/gluten hair and body products. The reactions are actually more than just rashes - they include tightness in my chest & a slight feeling of my throat closing - scary stuff.

I was a big time user of Aveda products. No more! They are definitely not gluten/wheat free!

I switched to Desert Essence shampoo & conditioner, Moroccan Method hair styling products, Savonnerie soap, lotion and lip balm. FYI, watch the lip products - they are easily ingested when you eat or wet your lips!

The switch is working out for me so far.

Good luck to you!

Best,

Pondy

Think about it for a sec...you are in the shower with the conditioner on your hair and you are shaving your legs and the conditioner runs down your face and onto your mouth.........glutened!

Safe brands that I know of are Dove, Garnier Fructis, Finesse and Suave.

I changed my products and I found that the nagging headache, nauseous and head rash went away. I didn't feel %100 better until I got all the gluten out. Shampoo, makeup, lip gloss, lotion, hand soap. I am gluten free head to toe, inside and out :)

I didn't change any shampoos or conditioners and my blood test after 6 months was normal. I just changed lipstick.
