So, the biopsy. Would someone please tell me what happens when you go in to have your endoscopy done? Is one put to sleep? Or is it done while you are awake? Also, do you have to stay in the hospital over night?

It's a breeze. You're asleep. Then you wake up in another room & someone has to drive you home.

True, the anticipation is far worse than the realization.

I wasn't put to sleep for mine but they gave me a mild sedative and local anaesthetic and apart from the initial 'swallowing' (which is just weird rather than painful) it was fine.

As long as you have someone to take you home you're discharged a few hours after the test. Really nothing to worry about!

I had both the endoscopy and colonoscopy and was given memory-erasing drugs. The surgeon told me it was not an anaesthetic but it feels like it. The last thing I remember was the surgeon showing me the tube then I was awake and holding my husband's hand in recovery. The prep for the colonoscopy was not all that pleasant but my doctor wanted to rule anything else out at the same time (which was a wise idea - it gave me presence of mind). A few hours later I was eating like usual. I also slept well that night.

I worried for nothing! It seriously was easier than getting a filling at the dental office. :P
