Headaches with confusion

Hi there, I am seeking your wisdom please with regards to headaches I’ve been getting for the last few years. They start with a visual migraine sometimes/sometimes not and are often followed by confusion I don’t know who I am or where I am and - very frightening, my neck looks and sometimes my vision is slightly affected too. My thoughts are so dark throughout the headache and my husband says I am white as a sheet and seem very disorientated. I can then be in bed for the next few days sometimes throwing up, sometimes not. My digestion is not painful (it was in past) just weird And definitely connected in some way. Looking back I really think they have started after I’ve eaten wheat and sometimes sugar too. I have suffered all my life with headaches but these are slightly different. The doctor says many people with migraines get the same symptoms and not to worry.  I wondered if anybody else had experienced confusion or neck problems or anything similar to these? Thank you

Welcome!

There are over 200 symptoms attributed to celiac disease. Migraines are one of them as celiac disease is systemic (not just gut issues).

The only way to find out is to get tested.  Ask your PCP for a simple blood test:

Thank you very much for that info, yes I am awaiting a test but was just looking for some reassurance in the meantime really and to you know if anybody else has similar symptoms. Thank you x

See the little search box with the magnifying glass?  Just query “migraines” and you will find lots of members with comparable migraine symptoms.  ?

Migraines are definitely associated with celiac. Many many factors contribute to migraines, which also occur with a celiac. Definitely seek help as your migraines diminish the quality of life. “Don’t worry,” is not an acceptable plan of care. Vitamin deficiencies with celiac can cause or contribute to migraines. Dairy sensitivity can contribute to migraines. Sleep disturbances can contribute. The stress of healing can tax the body and contribute. You need a doctor that partners with you in your care so you can get some relief and function.

Good luck.

Thank you very much. I will be getting the help from a natural doctor as I’m in the UK and Don’t find mainstream medicine very clued up about this kind of thing here. Thank you for your help XX

I had horrible migraines when before I was diagnosed. It was so bad it would make me really confused, nauseous, and basically out of it.

Not saying you have celiac disease but what you describe is pretty common for in untreated celiacs.

That's  really helpful thank  you. I'm going to do do a home test kit shortly as I don't want to go through the biopsy test they do here, so will know soon. Thank you

Thank you so much for your kindly answer ? I live in the UK and find it very hard getting the help needed here so I tend to use natural medicine for most things.  I will find a naturopath who can help ? thank you so much, take care xxx

@Aretaeus Cappadocia thank you for your reply and the link, that is very helpful to get a visual of just how small of an amount can cause a reaction. I know I am not consuming gluten or coming into contact with gluten from any other source. I will stop touching/tossing bread outside! My diet has not changed, and I do not have reactions to the things I am currently eating, which are few in number. My auto immune reaction just seems so severe. The abdominal pain is extreme. It takes a lot out of me. I guess I will be this way for the rest of my life if I ever happen to come into contact with gluten? I appreciate the help.

Thankyou I did find out the Infectious disease is the route to go rather than dermatologist. I did reach out to two major hospitals and currently waiting on approval for one of them in Infectious Diseases to call me. I also did have implants ( I didn't know and sense not properly in my medical. Neither did surgeon)in 2006 and there was a leak 2023 during the same time I was dealing with covid, digestive issues, eyes and skin.Considering I " should  be fine" not consuming gluten/wheat, taking vitamins for sibo and STILL feeling terrible. It has to be parasites. I also take individual eye drops prescribed, could there be an issue there? Anyways my pcp thinks I need therapy because again they don't acknowledge my digestive issues because in my records it shows im fine, hintz the reason I had to go back to bay area hospital:(  I thought skin issues maybe sibo related but I feel and have seen and seriously trying not to think about it because it's disgusting.

oops. I didn't see that before posting or I would have at least referenced it. The two recipes are pretty similar, but I think the newer one is a little simpler/faster. Next time though I will search more before posting.

I love Middle Eastern food and eggplant, and here is another version we shared some time back:

The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.
