All over body swelling

Hi guys,

I just want to see if anyone else experiences these symptoms. Basically, I can’t have an endoscopy/colonoscopy because I would have to eat gluten for how ever many weeks but I never feel good eating it anyway. So my doctor does think I’m celiac or some form of gluten intolerance. This is what happened..could someone let me know if this is common please.

Thursday night I had a foot long whole meal from subway with chicken fillet. Basically, they had run out of gluten-free bread and I thought I’d see what happens if I do eat it.
The next morning I had to go to the bathroom about 3 times. My gut felt sore/swollen and I had to sleep for an hour or so during the day because I was exhausted. Throughout the day my body just became more swollen like my arms, gut, legs etc. I just feel like a huge blimp. I only want to wear lose clothes and I’ve tried taking an anti inflammatory but it does nothing.

My belly is definitely still sensitive and swollen. Is this quite a common story when eating gluten?

I did not vomit or anything, I just had stomach pain and went to the bathroom a few times. Thank you for any help!

Hi! I am not a medical professional. I think that your symptoms are pretty common for either a gluten intolerance or celiac. I would suggest that you talk with your doctor.

Thank you. I’ve spoken to doctor but it’s hard to pin point if I don’t get the colonoscopy done. Have you had a flare that lasts days? It’s been 4 days and still stomach issues and swelling :(

Your symptoms sound a lot like what I experienced before diagnosis. I have not had any major flare ups since going gluten free. My understanding is that it can take quite awhile for symptoms to clear. Unfortunately, 4 days or longer is not uncommon. 😞

I would also suggest that you check for any potential sources of gluten that you may be getting into. Even check your medicines, cosmetics, and toothpaste. And, you might want to consider replacing your toothbrush.

I hope you start feeling better soon. Keep us posted!

Aww thank you so much for replying. I really appreciate it!! My poor little belly looks a little pregnant haha 😆 it’s just more annoying the body swelling coz I feel uncomfortable in my clothes 😞

I’ll definitely do what u said - I just got a new toothbrush so win! Good timing haha. Thanks again xx

I think the fact that you could not eat gluten daily for a few weeks in order to get tested pretty much sums it up--you probably are gluten sensitive and no matter what the test results would indicate, you should go gluten-free.

Thank you both. I haven't had access to the test results but will get them and post here.

The ulcers are prepyloric ulcers. Not sure if that makes any difference.

Duodenal ulcers are not uncommon either and often result from H.Pylori infections. https://www.healthdirect.gov.au/duodenal-ulcer

I had what was termed "lesions," and normally ulcers are in the stomach, rather than the small intestines. I'm not sure why they would want you to have her continue to eat gluten, since she had a positive blood test, but as her doctor said, if she is uncomfortable and having symptoms why not have her go gluten-free at this point? If her symptoms improve, it would be another indicator that she has celiac disease and/or gluten sensitivity. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
