Cold Case Character Has Celiac

My jaw dropped last night while watching Cold Case on CBS. Jeremy Ratchford (Nick) tried to get an extremely overweight woman to hurry a forensic analysis on a gun for him. He brings pastries to her desk and she lashes out at him stating she is a Celiac and allergic to wheat.

Main stream TV getting with the program! The allergy reference is poor but more awareness is better than none. I was diagnosed 15 years ago, when there were no foods to eat, no alternative flours to bake with and no awareness at all. It's easy to be a Celiac today. All the Celiac whiners should take a time out and think what it was like for us old timers.

:( I watched last night with one eye closed. I missed it. What I watched was about a teacher killed by another teacher and they blamed the street kid. Maybe I saw another show. I would have liked to have heard that.

Yes, I agree, in the four years that I have been dealing with this, it's been nothing short than miraculous.

Hah, I saw this too. And laughed. It was just so random. And surprising. But I was glad I caught it, considering I don't usually watch Cold Case. I had a feeling someone on these boards would mention it though. You're right www, while the allergy reference is incorrect, any mention of celiac on TV is probably a good one.

Momma Goose, you were watching the episode we're referencing, you must have just missed the scene, it was a pretty quick one. After she lashed out at the detective over the scones, he asked her what she enjoyed. She said theater, so he bought her tickets to Wicked and took her out to dinner.

I'd love to know how the reference made it into the show. Maybe the actor has celiac herself? Maybe one of the cast or crew members has it, or knows someone who does? Either way, it's definitely becoming more common. I was just diagnosed last year, but it seems anyone I ever mention it to knows SOMEONE who either has celiac, a gluten intolerance, or a wheat allergy.

:D I love that they handled it this way--in a positive manner. I wish I had seen it!

I just saw the episode (we have a DVR so I tend to record a bunch of stuff and then watch whenever I have a chance!). The character's name was Carla and she was an overweight black woman, which is SO COOL!! Not only did they have a celiac reference, but she does NOT fit the stereotype that the ONLY people with celiac disease are skinny people of irish descent!!! <_<

Anyway, the one cop guy (Vera I think? I don't remember his whole name, the chubbier one) tries to bribe her (to process his evidence first) with baked goods and she says, "Lookin to kill me? I have Celiac Disease!!" (insert his confused expression) "I'm allergic to wheat". :D

Although I'm not CRAZY about the allergy reference, it makes sense. I mean, in an office setting where you don't know the other person like at all, a lot of people would explain celiac disease as an allergy to wheat. So it's not the worst thing that's ever happened.

Usually DH doesn't watch cold case with me, but I saved this episode for him to see! I'm TOO excited about it!

My hubby laughed at me because I got so excited. I must have asked him half a dozen times if he heard what she said. LOL :lol:

      Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat. In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue. A wedge...

      I did get the pneumonia vaccine about 4 years ago. I had this amazing allergist who did all those vitamin deficiencies test and told to get that vaccine. Unfortunately she retired. I haven’t been to an allergist in a few years, I’m not sure what my levels are now. I did have a pulmonologist who wasn’t concern and said I seemed fine to him that I was young...

      Yes I do have acid reflux. I’m not on anything for it at the moment. I sometimes wonder if that’s what it could be because I get heart burn every night. I may revisit my gastrointestinal doctor again. Thanks for the reply

      Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways. I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux. Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following...

      Since initially getting your D checked a few years ago, has it since rebounded to normal levels? Sounds like at some point you got it checked again.

      Hi @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour I wonder if you suffer from reflux, as if you do, you may find it could also be irritating your airways.  I shall explain: I have to use a blue inhaler from time to time, and it seems to be related to reflux.  Never had any trouble before my coeliac diagnosis, the reflux seemed to be something that developed following a holiday to France in 2019, where I had been exposed to gluten.    The reflux continued into the autumn and winter, my throat itched to begin with, particularly after meals, but it then that feeling of irritation seemed to spread to my lungs.  I even found it difficult to breathe on occasion. What stopped it in its tracks was using a wedge pillow at night, following a reflux diet (you can find them online), not eating 2-4 hours before bed and also having a dose of Gaviscon Advanced at night, which forms a barrier so that acid/food can't go back up your esophagus.  The throat irritation faded, and then I found it easier to breathe again. Just mentioning in case it could be a contributing factor.
