Low MCHC
knitty kitty replied to hayley3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I like to keep my Vitamin D level above 80 because at that level Vitamin D can act like a hormone and regulate the immune system better and reduce inflammation. Have you considered supplementing the eight essential B vitamins? These are important because our body cannot make them, so we need to get them every day from our diet. Since malabsorption... -
question? are my symptoms alike ?
knitty kitty replied to Rebeccaj's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
No, I've never stopped breathing. I don't have asthma. I'm a lifelong Celiac. My symptoms when exposed are throat tightening, difficulty breathing, feeling faint. Feels like I'm drowning, can't get enough air even if forcefully inhaling. It's scary, I agree. I can react to airborne gluten while walking past the bakery aisle at the grocery store... -

knitty kitty replied to Rebeccaj's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Welcome to the forum, Sounds like you may be having an allergic reaction to wheat. Some people can have a wheat allergy as well as Celiac Disease, producing swollen tongue and esophagus, and difficulty breathing. After gluten exposure, I got gluten ataxia, panic disorder, vertigo, pins and needles (parathesia), loss of speech and hearing. I... -
Low MCHC
knitty kitty replied to hayley3's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
@hayley3, Didn't your doctor recommend supplementing Vitamin D in order to correct your very low Vitamin D level? Low Vitamin D can cause an increased risk of fractures and falls. Vitamin D deficiency can lead to osteoporosis, muscle weakness and parathesia. Low Vitamin D is also associated with anemia and infertility. Vitamin D is instrumental... -
It can take months to years of exposure to gluten (or casein) for the villi damage to become observable with the eye. Most of the early damage is microscopic. Were biopsy samples taken during your most recent endoscopy? There is a food additive, Microbial Transglutaminase, that can elicit the same tTg response. Microbial Transglutaminase is...

5yr old post diagnosis continued symptoms
knitty kitty replied to nattaliec's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
@nattaliec, Has your daughter been eating lots of gluten free processed foods? A diet high in carbohydrates (and low in nutritional value) can result in Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth which will cause gas (wind), diarrhea, and bloating. The anemia and fatigue can be helped with vitamin and mineral supplements. Has your daughter been... -
Fuelling exercise -corn and other gluten free grains
knitty kitty replied to Gilly M's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
@Gilly M, Have you discussed with your doctor the possibility of Celiac Disease? Lactose intolerance? SIBO? Malnutrition from malabsorption? Your stools may be resulting in malabsorption of nutrients because you may not be digesting and absorbing your food properly. Especially if you have had improvement while taking thiamine and B Complex... -

knitty kitty replied to Gilly M's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
Thiamine helps balance your electrolytes. How did you arrive at the conclusion you have electrolyte imbalance? Were you diagnosed by a doctor? Thiamine improves electrolyte imbalances. Insomnia, muscle twitching, muscle tension and tremors, and air hunger are neurological symptoms of Thiamine deficiency. Heavy periods are a symptom of Thiamine... -

Hi, @Gilly M, I'm sorry to hear you're still having problems. Have you ever had a genetic test for Celiac Disease? I'm concerned that you are still having "oxalate dumping". How does your "oxalate dumping" differ from sandy or grainy diarrhea? Have you been diagnosed with kidney stones? Gout? Have you tried removing dairy from your... -
Newly Confirmed Diagnosis
knitty kitty replied to Wendy226's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome to the forum, @Wendy226, Yes, your doctor should have been aware that Celiac Disease is genetic. After diagnosing your daughter with Celiac, all her first degree relatives (like her mom) should have been tested for Celiac as well. You've got a genetic combination common in Celiac Disease. Many of us have struggled with symptoms... -
Nutritional deficiencies on Gluten free diet References
knitty kitty commented on knitty kitty's blog entry in Thiamine Thiamine Thiamine
More information.... Damage to the small intestine (villus atrophy) results in malabsorption of essential vitamins and minerals. B vitamins cannot be made by the human body. We must get sufficient B vitamins from our diet every day because B vitamins cannot be stored. Unfortunately, the gluten free diet can be low in essential nutrients, especially... -
Do SSRIs worsen celiac symptoms?
knitty kitty replied to Anne G's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Welcome to the forum, @Anne G! Sorry to hear your daughter is having such a rough time. I have had very bad reactions to SSRIs. They are known to cause gastrointestinal side effects. Side-effect profile of fluoxetine in comparison with other SSRIs, tricyclic and newer antidepressants: a meta-analysis of clinical trial data https:/... -
Welcome to the forum, @Sundy Ward! Sorry you are still experiencing problems. Diarrhea can result in malabsorption of essential vitamins and minerals. Taking vitamin and mineral supplements can boost your ability to absorb these essential nutrients. Are you taking a B Complex, Vitamin D, and magnesium? Have you been checked for nutritional...

Great video, @plumbago! I agree wholeheartedly that sugar alcohols cause problems! I avoid them like the plague. I've had problems with candies, mints, toothpaste, and lots of gluten free processed foods which contain one sugar alcohol or another. The consequences just are not worth it! Found some interesting articles... https...

There are other nutrients necessary for red blood cell production which help correct anemia. Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Riboflavin B 2, Niacin B 3, Thiamine B 1, Pyridoxine B 6, Folate B 9, and Cobalamine B12 are the vitamins needed to prevent and correct anemia. Minerals like Copper and Zinc are also needed for red blood cell production. These are vitamins... -

I've been using Magnesium Threonate recently. It's a form of magnesium that can cross the blood brain barrier better than other forms. It improves brain cognition and memory. My brain finds it very relaxing. Read about it here.... A Magtein®, Magnesium L-Threonate, -Based Formula Improves Brain Cognitive Functions in Healthy Chinese ... -
You're in good company Guest! My doctors laughed at me when I suggested Celiac Disease. When I was suffering from nutritional deficiencies, instead of diagnosing life-threatening Pellagra and Wernicke's Encephalopathy, they said I was crazy and sent me away. Can you visit the doctor that diagnosed your friend? Have you had an at home genetic...

Celiac Sprue, Or Latex Allergy?
knitty kitty replied to michelleL's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I chose to make dietary and environmental changes. I follow a low histamine Paleo diet. I take Benfotiamine B 1, Pyridoxine B 6, and B12 Cobalamine because they make an enzyme Diamine Oxidase that breaks down histamine. DAO, Betaine Hydrochloride, and Niacin are available as nutritional supplements. Betaine Hydrochloride helps to breakdown histamine... -
Welcome to the forum, @mack4m! Dairy can cause the same autoimmune response as gluten does in about half of us. Dairy is also high in Iodine. Removing dairy from the diet may be helpful. High histamine levels, which are part of the immune response to gluten and dairy, can cause eczema and hives. Other food sensitivities (IgE responses) can develop...

@Nitsa, welcome to the forum! You may feel better taking Betaine Hydrochloride or DAO (Diamine Oxidase) supplements, both are digestive enzymes. With digestive enzyme supplements, food gets digested better. Poorly digested carbohydrates, like your gluten free rice, get digested by intestinal bacteria with gas and bloating as a result. You...

@DebJ14, That's great that the second doctor took your son off the Ppi! We need Thiamine and Niacin Vitamin B 3 to make stomach acid. Is your son taking a B Complex in addition? A B Complex will contain Niacin and Pyridoxine B 6. Pyridoxine is needed to make Diamine Oxidase, DAO, another digestive enzyme our bodies make that helps lower histamine...

@birdboyden, Hello. What a concerning situation! I've had gallbladder problems before my Celiac diagnosis. Problems with my gallbladder were caused by nutritional deficiencies. Malabsorption affects all the vitamins and minerals we need. Damage to the lining of the small intestine caused by the autoimmune response in Celiac can result...
