knitty kitty replied to Newhike's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
@Newhike, Thyroid problems are common in Celiac Disease. There's a genetic overlap. Nutritional insufficiency (vitamin and mineral deficiencies) found in Celiac Disease can contribute to other autoimmune diseases. Celiac Disease causes poor absorption of essential vitamins and minerals. Correction of nutritional insufficiency is very important in... -
I developed vitamin and mineral deficiencies before my diagnosis. Thiamine deficiency made me have a voracious appetite at some times and at other times, I had no appetite at all. Thiamine affects the satiety center in the brain that tells you to eat more or you've had enough. Thiamine deficiency also causes nausea. I would wake up ravenous...

Low libido due to coeliac?
knitty kitty replied to ReluctantlyGlutenFree's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
@ReluctantlyGlutenFree, I used high doses to correct my Vitamin D deficiency. I felt much better quickly. Vitamin D deficiency does affect your mood. I was struggling with depression, menstrual problems, and feeling off, but those resolved after getting and keeping my Vitamin D level above 80 nmol/L. Vitamin D is a fat based vitamin. Celiac... -
Low libido due to coeliac?
knitty kitty replied to ReluctantlyGlutenFree's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Oh, @Scott Adams, I apologize. I had a bit of a visceral reaction due to my own icky experience. It's so much easier to correct a Vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency and look for resolution of symptoms before undergoing HRT. Many doctors, including gynecologists, are clueless about Vitamin D and how nutritional deficiencies can wreak havoc... -

Thiamine has beneficial health effects when taken in high doses. It sort of "kick starts" the body's metabolism into functioning properly. It's truly amazing, the difference. Doses as low as 300 mg/day to as high as 2500 mg/day have been used to correct deficiencies and attenuate disease. See which level works for you. Our bodies can have difficulty... -

knitty kitty replied to Dr. K's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
@jbrguy, Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies? Many newly diagnosed Celiacs suffer from vitamin and mineral deficiencies, especially the eight B vitamins, Vitamin D and magnesium. The B vitamins like thiamine are water soluble and easily excreted if not needed. Thiamine B 1 has been shown to lower blood pressure. Interesting Reading... -

Hi, @Elizabeth M Blair, How much Thiamine are you taking? What form is it in? Have you tried increasing your Thiamine dose and looking for improvement? -
Low libido due to coeliac?
knitty kitty replied to ReluctantlyGlutenFree's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
But, @Scott Adams, she's way too young (32) for menopause! Vitamin D deficiency can cause low libido. Vitamin D acts like a hormone when levels are above 80 nmol/L. Vitamin D helps regulate the immune system, reducing inflammation, and also contributes to making estrogen, and testosterone (yes, women need testosterone, too). Zinc also helps with... -
I'm so glad to hear your neuropathy is improving! Dental visits are a huge stress! Thiamine helps with headaches. A combination of Thiamine, Cobalamine and Pyridoxine B6 work to relieve pain as well! You may feel worse before feeling better.... it's like starting an automobile that hasn't been cranked for a while, a couple of backfires to...

@Newhike, Hope you don't mind, but I helped you start your own post. Welcome to the forum! -
Yes, there's a link between vaccines and ataxia/neuropathy. Vaccines put a demand on the immune system. The immune system has to work hard to produce antibodies against whatever disease is in the vaccine. If the body is already low in Thiamine, the immune response caused by vaccinations can precipitate a thiamine deficiency. We need more Thiamine...

@trents, @HayleighNoWhey has been diagnosed with Celiac Disease by endoscopy. She mentioned it in a previous post. -
You are very welcome. Yes, doctors don't treat the body as a whole. Thiamine deficiency affects many body systems, many organs, but the body needs to be looked as as a whole, not just isolated parts. Yes, thiamine deficiency can affect the eyes and causes vision problems, blurry vision, and optic nerve damage. I had vision problems, too. ...

@Vicrob, Have you been tested for a thiamine deficiency? I have two genes for Celiac Disease. I developed vitamin and mineral deficiencies because Celiac Disease damages the small intestine so that these nutrients cannot be absorbed. I have had thiamine deficiency. I had ataxia from Thiamine deficiency. I also get gluten ataxia if exposed...

Feeling of food getting stuck
knitty kitty replied to HayleighNoWhey's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Yes, @HayleighNoWhey, I've had difficulty swallowing. Food got stuck at different spots. I had Gerd and was prescribed omeprazole and famotidine. They didn't work. If anything they made me feel worse. I was deficient in Thiamine and Niacin and other vitamins and minerals that I was not able to absorb because of Celiac Disease. Our bodies... -
Questions about cross contamination
knitty kitty replied to Steve P's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Some mental health/brain health problems arise due to malabsorption of nutrients. Deficiencies in some of the eight essential B vitamins can cause altered mental status. Pyridoxine B 6 and B12 deficiencies are linked to Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Thiamine B 1 deficiency causes anxiety and panic attacks, difficulty with reasoning, altered... -
Questions about Test Results
knitty kitty replied to KGB1819's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Much of the damage to the small intestine is microscopic. Yes, being off gluten three weeks can cause inconclusive biopsy results. Very brave of you to endure the gluten challenge to get a "gold standard" biopsy diagnosis! Yes, the use of Tums and Pepto as self medication is common in Celiac Disease. I get eczema around my eyes when exposed... -
You might have been caught at the earliest stages of CeD. Some of us old fogeys went undiagnosed for years or decades with accruing health problems. When we're younger, our bodies can heal faster. But as time goes on, symptoms pile up, too. Don't question your diagnosis. Be thankful doctors are more aware of CeD than in the past.

Gliadin X is a supplement of digestive enzymes that helps breakdown gluten if accidentally exposed. Some find activated charcoal helpful. I find a hot water bottle helps with stomach cramps. How is your son doing today?
