I may have small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO)

For years I've had Restless Leg Syndrome, and the more I read about it the more I see that it's tied to gut health, and especially SIBO (this link required a login, and it is a small study):

While the study is ongoing and recruitment just beginning, the researchers found SIBO in all 7 RLS patients studied to date.

I've asked my doctor to be tested for it, and am looking into the best treatment options just in case.

Scott,

What does the testing involve?

I think there is a breath test, and a stool test. Not sure which they will want to do.

Scott, here is a good resource on the various tests for SIBO.

I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advise.

Check into your iron levels that have been tied to RLS....my mom  had this when she got older.

Here is a nice johns hopkins university overview on the theory of their connection association.

https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/neurology_neurosurgery/centers_clinics/restless-legs-syndrome/what-is-rls/causes.html

I might post/explain more latter but this is a good start and here is a nice reference work/comprehensive review on SIBO and the various complications that can occur with SIBO. ..if you (or others reading this thread) want to study up on all the clinical presentations of SIBO.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3099351/

You might find some similarities.

Here is their table 3

Table 3

"Clinical Manifestations of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth

Weight loss

Steatorrhea

Vitamin/mineral deficiency

— Fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K)

— Vitamin B12

— Iron

Vitamin excess

— Folate

Hypoproteinemia/hypoalbuminemia

Decreased xylose absorption"

It is me again. Note Iron deficiency is on that list... and would/could explain the SIBO/Iron Deficiency (IDA) ...RLS connection that happens when someone develops SIBO as an official diagnsosi.

I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advise.

Hi Scott, yes I have had symptoms for years and this is the second GI I have seen and he could not believe I have never been tested. He called later today and I am scheduled for an endoscopy. Is there a way to tell how severe my potential celiac is from the results above? What are the chances I will have the biopsy and come back negative and we have to keep searching for a cause?

I agree christina, there is definitely many contributing factors! I have the pain today, my pelvis, hips and thighs ache! No idea why. But i have been sitting at work for 3 days so im thinking its my back. This disease is very mysterious (and frustrating) but not always to blame for every pain.

"her stool study showed she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that." The wording of this part of the sentence does not make any sense at all. I don't mean to insult you, but is English your first language? This part of the sentence sounds like it was generated by translation software.

What kind of stool test was done? Can you be more specific?
    • mishyj
Perhaps I should also have said that in addition to showing a very high response to gluten, her stool study showed that she had extreme reactions to everything achievement on it long course of microbials to treat that.
