Bruising

I'm still badly bruised from rolling out of bed onto my face Saturday night. I was at the health food store today and the women recommended a homeopathic medicine that helps bruises fade quicker. It's called Arnica Montana. You dissolve 4 tablets under your tongue 4xdy. I started it today and will keep you posted. Right now I'm so bruised I hate leaving the house. It takes me 20 minutes to cover it with my expensive gluten-free makeup. Washing off the makeup is painful. I'm staying in until Saturday Night when we go to visit a Haunted Hotel.

Aw Loey, hope it works quickly for you :)

Emilushka Contributor

Be careful. There is a toxin that Arnica Montana produces that can cause gastroenteritis and GI bleeding if you take too much of it. The toxin is called helenalin. I don't know what kind of dilution you're talking about with a homeopathic remedy, but be wary since that market is NOT regulated by anyone and those products do not have to be tested in order to be sold in stores. If you experience stomach or intestinal problems, it could be this supplement.

I was just diagnosed with Celiac in June. I had been bedridden for 6 weeks and the GI I was seeing literally gave me all of my test results the night before we moved. She thought that the Celiac had gone undiagnosed for decades and wanted me to have the capsule endoscopy as soon as I found a GI in my new state. I found a new GI because i wanted to get my son genetically tested before he left for college (phew- he tested negative- one less thing too blame mom for). My new GI was extremely dismissive. He treated me like a head case. I put my foot down and had the capsule endoscopy last week. He called me the day after and had done a 360- no longer dismissive and his demeanor has totally changed. They found an ulcer and I'm having a biopsy on November 12th. In light of that I'll stop taking the Arnica Montana.

Someone else recommended witch hazel so I'll switch to that. Just called my husband and asked him to pick it up on the way home. Just gave you a + for your help. I really appreciate it! I'm at a stage where I'm EXTREMELY sensitive to everything. This forum has been a lifeline.

I'm glad I was able to prevent a potential problem! YAY! I feel like I did my job today.

Topical witch hazel (I'm assuming that's what you meant) shouldn't cause you any problems. I don't know that it will work, either - your bruising, unless you're getting fresh blood to the area, should be more of a matter of your body cleaning up the blood that's already in the tissues. The witch hazel is usually more useful earlier on with abrasions, sunburns, and bruising. The distilled stuff they sell in the store is supposed to help contract the blood vessels near the surface of the skin, and it's an astringent (a cleaner). It certainly shouldn't hurt to use it, and in case you're getting any rebleeding it may well help.

The bruising spread to the entire side of my face toady. I think, perhaps because I tend to sleep on that side (and that's side I rolled out of bed from). Let me tell you the thud was so loud it woke my husband up as soon as it happened he immediately brought me ice. It's still very swollen (in addition to the bruising) and I don't know if I should still be icing it. It's painful to wash off the gluten-free makeup I apply to it before leaving the house.

I thought I might have had a minor concussion but didn't want to go to the hospital because they immediately assume it's domestic violence. The town we moved to is extremely small and everyone seems to know each other. My husband is the kindest, most supportive man so I don't want to have any questions raised.

If we hadn't moved to a new state I wouldn't have hesitated to get it checked out because I used the same doctor for 18 years and he knew my husband. My old GP was actually very much like Dr. House - a brilliant diagnostician. He was also always getting in trouble for doing what his patients needed , not what the hospital wanted him to. I had a close relationship with him.

Thanks for your support! It means more than I can say!

Don't be afraid to go to the ER if you're worried about it being a concussion or something else serious! Docs and nurses in the ER see way weirder things than someone who fell out of bed. The way you and your husband interact will speak volumes about your relationship, and while they are required to ask you if it's safe to go home (just in case) it won't mean anything about your husband. But please! Don't mess with your brains! If you hit your head and you think it's serious or if you ever lose consciousness, go to the ER.

Your poor face. If the icing helps with the pain, you can go ahead and keep icing it. I'm not surprised the bruising spread all over the side of the face you sleep on - I'm sure it was drawn down by gravity. If you're going to take something for pain, I'd avoid ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) because that tends to cause GI problems too and with the ulcer you already have, I'd hate to have you aggravate things any further.

I always hate the way Dr. House treats his patients like human guinea pigs. I mean ... sheesh. Every test under the sun, every organ biopsied or scanned, craziness. He's also mean. I have a hard time watching that show.

For future spills, I have found a 10% dilution of helichrysum essential oil to be nearly magical. You put it on the "oopsie" right when you get hurt and keep treating every couple hours for the rest of the day. It helps the pain and you won't bruise nearly as badly. I use a good corsican helichrysum, usually from Nature's Gift. Open Original Shared Link I have been doing business there for years and the products are really good. (Patch test ahead of time to be sure you're not sensitive to helychrusum - it's a pretty mild oil and I've never seen anyone react.) Unfortunately, it does not work for bruising after the fact, although it still may be helpful with the pain.

If you suspect a concussion you really should go to the ER or at least talk to a Dr. You may have fractured something and it sounds like you need some advice and maybe an X-ray. If you go in with your obviously supportive husband by your side saying "I have been having serious coordination problems and am falling regularly - please help me", I don't think you will trigger any suspicions of abuse.

There is also the topical arnica which I prefer with smaller areas and with it being topical I would think it would be safer. We like the one sold by GNC that looks like hair gel (we didn't like the feel of the other one we tried but your milage may vary). It is great for sore muscles, bruising etc.

Oh, and I have no affiliation with GNC other than occasionally shopping there.

Thanks for all of your advice and wise words. The headache is much better today and I have been avoiding Advil or any form of NSAID. The witch Hazel seems to be helping already.

I agree with you about how Dr. House treats his patients (and staff). My doctor was compared to him because he was usually gruff (not with me) but was a brilliant diagnostician who could figure out what was wrong without the tests. My doctor was always being suspended for doing what the patient needed regardless of hospital procedures and policies. It's funny because a good friend of mine went back to school to become a nurse and she's the only one who will stand up to him. When I told him she was my BF he said she was also the only nurse with a spine and a brain. If I was still with him and the GI he sent me to I would have already had the biopsy of the ulcer. I actually used Princeton Medical Center (the hospital they refer to on House - the overhead shots in the show are of Princeton University's Campus). I think we're drawn to the show because we lived there. The hospital where I live now is VERY small and the GI wants a special anesthesiologist.

Thanks for all of the support!!!!!!!

Not meaning to sound like a 'MOM' but you should have gone to the ER the night it happened. I just kind of assumed you had. As serious as this injury was you could have fractured a bone in your face or gotten a concussion. If it happens again do please be seen by a doctor.

I promise I will!! Though I hope it doesn't happen again. I hope my GI refers me to a GP so I can have the blood work to test for vitamin deficiencies. He's on vacation this week. I did feel like it was initially a slight concussion but the headache is gone, the swelling is going down and the bruising is a "Little" better. Other than a shiner I have a bruise that looks like a stick drawing of a zombie (how fitting for Halloween).

THank you all for the advice and support. If it had happened where I used to live I wouldn't have thought twice about going to the ER. We were also visiting our son a at college that day and I didn't want to miss it.

I REALLY appreciate all o fthe support I've gotten through this forum. It's a lifeline!

Hey Loey,

The haunted hotel thing sounds pretty cool. Post and tell us about your experience.

Had a great time at the Bates Haunted Motel. It was small so it only took about 20 minutes. Superman jumped and yelled a few times (me too). At one point someone got sawed in half and guts fell out (he was obviously in a box). They let 4 people in at a time and we were in with a young girl and her father. She got really scared. The Penitentiary was definitely better last year but it was great to get out of the house.

Then we came home and "did the deed, jumped the broomstick, or had our gluten-free cake and ate it too." The last time was the night our son left for college (August 28th) and it was WAAAAAAY too long ago. Won't let that happen again.

After that we watched "Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown."

I tried on my mask and we decided that I don't have to cover the zombie bruise.

Still hoping bruises will fade more by Wednesday when my girlfriends arrive but they know me for a long time (went to grad school with both of them and I'm old enough to be their mother) and they are used to my "falling incidents."

On the 3rd day of my first teaching job I fell down and broke the fall with my hand. Three fingers were broken backwards. That time I think the fall was due to a drainage hole in he middle of the hallway (or was it????). What a way to make an impression!! I was out for over two months on workman's comp. It was the an inner city teaching job at a charter school and they had trouble getting subs. I had a friend who didn't have a job yet so she agreed to sub for me. I did all of the lesson planning and photocopying worksheets at home (Superman put me a printer/copier), as well as progress reports, report cards, etc. The school nurse lived in my town and would pick up all of my LP's, the classwork and anything else I had and bring it to my friend. I was able to stay hands on (so to speak). To make a long story short my friend never set foot in a classroom again. And these were first graders. I think you have to have a calling to work with children from an inner city. My new town is anything but that. There are two districts nearby that are considered "on the wrong side of the tracks." I might look into them as well when I'm finally well enough to sub. Why are my fonts all different?

Time to shower and get ready for the doorbell to ring.

Happy Halloweeeeen!!!!!!!!!!!

Loey

P.S. Thanks for all of the great advice!!

AMEN.

You are not going to believe this (or perhaps you are). I was putting the last part of my costume on and slipped off my chair smack onto the side of the face I had hurt. Hubby is going out for crazy glue to fix my glasses (only pair I have that covers the bruise - need a new pair as I had scratched d a god pair when I fell in Point Judith (before I knew about Ataxia) and I don't want to use my good pair because I'll be screwed if I had anything happens to them. So I'll have to get a new pair of backup glasses as soon as I pay off my credit card next month. I use progressive bifocals that also turn into sunglasses and they're VERY expensive. I KNOW I should go to the ER but I don't have a headache and I also don't want to miss the trick or treaters. I promise to go tomorrow!!!! I am just so sick of this and really angry at myself. i guess it's better that it's the same side.

I also see an EAP counsellor (they deal with transitions from moving, unemployment, illness, etc) through my husband's company and I get 8 free sessions. My old therapist from home told me to be careful about what I tell her because she works for my husband's company not for me and there is no patient confidentiality until I begin sessions with my new therapist (not EAP) in 6 weeks. Do you know anything about this? I canceled last week's appointment and told her my son gave me a cold. My husband is the sweetest, kindest man and I don't want anything to go into his records.

Thanks for all of the support. Right now I'm managing to multitask and put ce on it while I type. Also, the last fall made it hard to read and this one hasn't affected my vision. i think the glasses breaking saved me some trauma.

Ginger38, that sounds very difficult.  Each dietary restriction makes it harder to figure out what to eat. Before my celiac diagnosis I already watched out for my cholesterol level and migraine triggers, but those are much easier than diabetes restrictions. One “bad” meal isn’t that much of a problem for cholesterol levels, and my migraines only happened if I consistently ate the triggers. After many years I’ve figured out how to bake gluten free but I think many recipes have more starch which wouldn’t work for diabetes. If you go with the elephant eating analogy, I think the first portion to work on would be the diabetes, since the immediate consequences of not being careful (passing out from low blood sugar, or diabetic coma from high blood sugar) are so severe. The next portion would be celiac. The serious consequences aren’t as immediate, but if you have celiac disease, I think of eating gluten like a booster shot - revving up the immune system, but to attack yourself leading to long term damage. It sounds like you are experiencing this damage now. I did a google search on “gluten free food for diabetics” and a number of sites with advice came up.  If your insurance will cover it and you can find one, a registered dietician who knows about both diabetes and celiac disease might help you figure out what to eat safely. Hopefully my post will both scare and encourage you, as requested, with a big dose of compassion because this sounds very difficult and you are clearly suffering.
    • Aretaeus Cappadocia
Reading the original post on this thread made me think of "How To Eat An Elephant". The key point is that a whole, big problem can seem insurmountable but if you break it into bite-sized pieces it is much easier to accomplish. Here is the google description. It's not bad: If you're facing a daunting goal, you can use these steps to "eat your elephant": Identify the Elephant: Clearly define the large project or goal that feels overwhelming. Break it Down: Divide the major task into smaller "bite-sized" pieces. If a piece still feels too big, break it down further. Prioritize: Decide which "bite" to take first based on necessity or impact. Focus on the Now: Instead of worrying about the whole animal, focus only on the single step you are taking right now. Maintain Consistency: Progress comes from taking the "next right step" every day until the task is complete. Celebrate Small Wins If I understood Ginger38's post correctly, you are facing the prospect of a gluten challenge, but you are already eating gluten on an intermittent basis. It also sounds like many of the symptoms you attribute to gluten consumption are in full expression. Step back and take a deep breath. Get a notebook and start a gluten-related diary. Don't try to make it perfect; just record what you can about food intake and what you experience as you go along. Talk to your Dr's office (nurse, Dr, whomever) about the challenge. The most rigorous challenge is for someone who has already gone truly gluten free but now needs a clear diagnosis. Someone who is already eating gluten should not need as much "challenge". Even at that, google describes an example challenge as 1-2 slice of bread or 1/2 cup of pasta a day. If that describes your existing diet you are already there. For the moment, try to focus on getting past the challenge and test. Once you have the results, start planning accordingly.
    • Aretaeus Cappadocia
I don't know the answer to your question any better than a google search, but I am sure someone else will step up and answer. I am popping up to recommend that you keep a careful diary (in case you weren't already). Try to catalog what you are eating and experiencing. Bring a copy to your next visit (and if you have access to the Dr, also send a copy a couple days in advance). Don't assume that they will read it. They might, but they also might be under tremendous time pressure and not get to it. Two other suggestions: if your healthcare provider has a web portal, sign on and search for "gluten challenge". They may have a standard page and Dr assumed you would find it on your own. If that doesn't work, call the Dr's office and ask the office for their official advice. You probably wouldn't need to speak to the Dr directly. There should be some nurse or staff member who could answer that

After few months going gluten free, I decided to reintroduce gluten in my diet so I can do a proper diagnosis for Celiac disease. During the gluten free period I felt incredibly good. I stopped having hypoglycemia symptoms, I gained some muscle (Still, I am considerably underweight) and my anxiety totally disappeared. I felt totally like a new person. Now, I almost reached the second week of gluten challenge and all my symptoms are progressively coming back. The first days I was ok, just a bit of acid reflux I could control with medicines. However, after the first week I started to feel real stomach pain and tiredness, my face is growing acne and sometimes (specially when I walk) i feel painful migraines.  I am afraid If I am eating too much gluten or not enough, the "4 slices of bread" indication confuses me. I am actually eating 20 g of bread, 3 biscuits and 40 g of croissant each day. My doctor was not very specific when he gave me the medical order for the gluten challenge, so I invented my own daily gluten menu. Do you have any suggestions? 4 weeks will be enough to do the blood test with my current gluten intake?  Thank you
    • cristiana
      V. interesting. It might well explain the tiredness, and the increased headaches, then.   I'm trying to get my TTG numbers down a bit by avoiding eating out.  Hopefully then if I've healed more I guess I will be able to absorb more iron.  Will find out at the next blood test in the autumn. Thanks so much for your help.
