Rudi's Slider Rolls

Celiac Julie Rookie

I was just wondering if anyone else is having problems with Rudi's products. The only thing I've tried so far is the slider rolls for burgers and I got violently ill. I thought maybe it was from something else I ate since they say they're gluten free so I tried them again last night, turkey sandwich! VIOLENTLY ILL!! It's a bummer because they're delicious but I can only narrow my sickness down to them. Thank you for any feed back.

Probably because they are not gluten free?

"Potato Slider Rolls

These whole grain rolls blend a smooth texture, a delicious potato taste, and a hint of cane sugar sweetness to provide the rich flavor needed to complement sliders and small sandwiches.

Made with stuff you can pronounce and ingredients you recognize

Organic wheat flour, water, organic evaporated cane juice, organic potato flour, organic high oleic sunflower/safflower oil, yeast, organic wheat gluten, sea salt, organic vinegar, organic oat flour, cultured organic wheat starch, organic whole wheat flour, ascorbic acid, natural enzymes."

I only have the bread, that's all I can get here, and I've never had a problem. I know that they do have wheat products as well, could that be what you got? The link is for the gluten free side, and I don't see 'slider rolls.' Just multigrain hamburger buns.

This is the organic side, with the listing of 'potato slider rolls.' Is that what you have? I so hope not!

I was confused at first by Rudi's because for some reason, probably because theirs were the first products I had heard about on this forum that I was able to find in a local store. I thought EVERYTHING they made was gluten-free. I did not know that they were first a regular bakery. I was in the store looking for breads and picked up a package of Rudi's "whole grain" bread expecting to see things like rice, quinoa and sorghum. I was so surprised to see "whole wheat"!

Label reading is definitely important even on things we buy regularly.

It's important to note they have two separate processing locations, so there's no chance of cross-contamination, whatsoever.

So, OP, maybe you did get a wheat product?

Hello, Maggie here from Rudi's Gluten-Free Bakery. We do not make gluten-free sliders. The closest thing to sliders we make are Rudi's Gluten-Free Multigrain Hamburger Buns. Our gluten-free products clearly state Gluten-Free on the packaging and our gluten-free breads are sold in the freezer.

Rudi's Gluten-Free is an extension of Rudi's Organic Bakery which does bake products containing gluten, including potato slider rolls. It sounds like this might be the issue. Rudi's Organic products state 'contains wheat' under the ingredient list and are found in the bakery section.

Please let us know if you have any questions. Thanks - Maggie, Rudi's Gluten-Free Bakery info@rudisbakery.com

How cool is that? Someone has a question about a product and instead of having to call the company, all they have to do is click on this, the world's best forum!

I have a question for you Maggie. Is there ANY possibility that someone like the fine company you work for might someday make a bread with no gluten, no soy, no potato starch, and especially no corn or xanthan gum? I am intolerant to all of the above and I miss bread so much!

Either way, thanks for responding to the OP in this, and for caring enough about your customers to have joined our forum. :)

Yes, Rudi's makes regular wheat containing products in addition to gluten free products...I almost caught myself purchasing the wheat product at one time. I love Rudi's products...am waiting for the day when/if they produce a gluten free English Muffin. Love their cinnamon/raisin bread.

      H. Pylori is negative. However, I was treated twice for this infection. All of my unknown complaints started with pneumonia and were reinforced with Covid-19. I currently have thyroid disease. However, my thyroid problem receded with synthetic hormones and was almost solved. My body has been on alert for the last year. Especially skin, intestines, eyes.

It happened like you said, the dermatologist prescribed the creams. He told me to go to gastroenterology and left the door open for immunology. I'm going to immunology because my throat swelled up last yesterday at night for no reason and suddenly I've developed asthma. And I don't have that. I gave up gluten so quickly that I couldn't even start. I am going to have a gene test. In my country, gluten-free food is costly but with a coeliac diagnosis, we can buy it for half the price. That's why I always eat potatoes, bananas and rice.

I think I have found a partial answer, too long to quote here. Polyphagia, depression, stress, loss of nutrients due to damaged villi. Tx all.

@cjjones5969, Unintended weight loss is a symptom of Thiamine deficiency.  Gluten free processed foods are not required to be enriched with vitamins like gluten containing flours and products made with them.  Switching to a gluten free diet can precipitate vitamin deficiencies. Celiac Disease damages the small intestine where vitamins like Thiamine and the other B vitamins  are absorbed.  B Vitamins cannot be stored for long in the body, so we need to consume sufficient quantities every day.  Thiamine can be stored the least amount of time (21days), and because our bodies require so much of it, thiamine runs out first.  Unexplained weight loss is a symptom of Thiamine deficiency disorder.   Please discuss supplementation with B vitamins with your doctor and nutritionist.  B vitamins are water soluble and any excess is easily excreted if not needed.  Thiamine is nontoxic and safe.  Benfotiamine, a form of Thiamine, has been scientifically shown to promote intestinal healing.  Blood tests for B vitamins are not accurate.  The best way to see if you're low in B vitamins is to take them and look for improvement in health.   Thiamine works with magnesium to make life sustaining enzymes.  Magnesium is also needed to keep calcium in the bones.  Magnesium should also be supplemented when taking Calcium.   Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your progress!

Welcome to the forum, @cjjones5969 Are you eating much processed gluten free facsimile foods?   Keep in mind that gluten free processed foods, like gluten free breads, pasta and cookies, are not required to be enriched with vitamins and minerals.  Flours containing gluten are required to be enriched with vitamins and minerals lost in processing.  Eating a diet high in carbohydrates requires additional Thiamine and other B vitamins to turn the carbohydrates into energy.  Early Thiamine deficiency can manifest as "Gastrointestinal Beriberi" which results in abdominal pain,  bloating and gastroparesis.   The Gluten Free diet can be low in essential nutrients, like the B vitamins, Vitamin D, and minerals like iron.   Talk to your doctor and nutritionist about supplementing with B vitamins which boosts the absorption of these essential nutrients.     @A.C.123, I agree, iron supplements can cause constipation.  Have you tried taking iron supplements at bedtime, with a Vitamin C supplement?  Taking mine this way helps immensely.
