Okay, About Oats...

I have a question for you all:

The one thing I really do miss in this diet is my morning oatmeal. I know about how the gluten in oats is not toxic for many celiacs, and I also know about the cross-contamination issues with the big North American oat brands out there. Hence, I stay away from oats as I am wary of cross-contamination. I know that oats that are not cc'd are available, but here's my dilemma: I do not have obvious gastrointestinal symptoms when I am glutened. So it is difficult for me to know if I am injesting stuff with hidden gluten in it. Perhaps I would have GI damage from unCC'd oats, but I wouldn't know it. How many of you can eat oats and have no problem?

When it cools off here (in Oct.) I'm going to try the new gluten free oats from www.glutenfreeoats.com. I know many who use McCann's steel cut oats with no issues but I'd rather get the absolute best oats I can and not worry.

we use gluten-free oats floridanative is referring to. my girls do not seem to have a problem with them.

BuddhaBar, I came across this thread while searching online for celiac insomnia (having also scared myself stupid by finding out about fatal insomnia) and it did bring me some piece of mind as it so closely matches my own experience. I know this thread is old now, I hope you're doing well, and thanks for posting your experience.

That's great news, @HelloFlowersGoodbyeFlour.  And you might find that if you do have asthma, keeping your reflux under control may help, if my experience is anything to go by.

Quick update I ended going to a clinic they heard me wheezing and gave me a steroid shot I’m feeling much better now and I’m planing on getting reevaluated for asthma as the clinic doctor is thinking it might be that based on how I reacted to the steroid. But he couldn’t diagnose.  thanks again to everyone that applied (still seeing the gastrointestinal doctor too!)

Definitely worth speaking to your gastroenterologist about this. My own told me that by using Gaviscon a barrier forms over the contents of the stomach and stops gas and acid irritating the throat.  In fact, he said to me that because I found relief using Gaviscon that was a very clear indicator that reflux was the cause of that particular issue.   A wedge pillow will really help with this - or raising the top bed legs with bricks.
