Hypothyroid

After reading somthing somewhere on this site I looked up symptoms for hypothyroid and have found that I have every symptom listed on there. How many people have both this and celiacs.....is it comon? What to you do to treat it.....my regular doctor already thinks I am nuts. Any information on what to do about this would be helpful.

Autoimmune diseases can happen together and there are types of autoimmune Thyroid so - yes - you can have both. I have. I found the HypoThyroid first and had to fight 3 Drs to get a dx and proper treatment. This Dr was so good she knew of the link between Thyroid and Celiac and B12 and tested me for those as well. My signature has a link. That is where I got the info that saved my life. How are your temps ? Low temps are an indicator for low Thyroid and possibly Adrenal Fatigue. You aren't nuts at all - your Dr needs to rethink. Or you need a new Dr.

Unfortionantly the doctor who doesn't think I am nuts isn't covered under my insurance. I donno if I currently have actuall low temps. I have always had a problem with being cold when no one else is and have had cold hands and feet even in the summer. Another thing that keeps coming to mind is that about 6 years ago I took an anatomy and physiology class where we had to take our temps every hour for two days and average them for an asignment.....the thing is mine was on the low side......I wanna say at that point it avg somewere in the 97's.

Yup. Sounds Hypo. Warrants further testing. Have you read STTM ? It lists all the tests you need for Thyroid.

The doc that I can't go to anymore becuase of insurance did do a thyroid test wich came back ok. I had a 1.82 and they say .34-5.60 are ok. Can these tests be wrong or inacurate? The test name was thyroid stim hormone.

Me too hypothyrodism and celiac. I just wanted to add that thyroid meds did not work for me because iodine blocked the uptake. Took me 20 years to figure that one out. It was not until I figured that one out that I actually began to get better. Fairly common with DH. They thought I was nuts too. The reality is they were ignorant. My doctor is not covered by my insurance, but worth every penny.

Firstly. The lab range for TSH is 0.5 - 3.0 now and your Dr and lab are using old refernces. Most good Drs start to treat Hypo as TSH >2.

There are also many doctors, general practitioners and even endocrinologists who are still routinely diagnosing and treating patients according to the old reference range simply because they aren't even aware of the new reference range guidelines.

Your Dr hasn't ordered all the Thyroid testing. You need FREE T3, FREE T4 and ANTIBODIES tested.

Its the Antibodies that will link you to Celiac as that is autoimmune Thyroid. Yes. It IS possible to have a normal TSH and have Antibodies for Hashis Thyroid. This is what happened to me and about EIGHT Drs got it wrong over THIRTY years !!

So go back to your Dr and make a fuss.

I second Georgie. The only test that showed my hypo was the thyroid peroxidase antibodies.

I have hypothryoid (dx 2 years ago when I was trying to get pregnant) and now celiac (dx 6 months ago) - not sure which came first.

Yep, these autoimmune disorders ABSOLUTELY tend to happen in clusters...the number of people with three or four conditions is just too big to be a coincidence! I have type one diabetes, celiac and most recently hypothyroidism. Many endocrinologists run the celiac panel on their diabetic patients every couple of years, and thyroid tests even more frequently.

Just read a fascinating post from frenchiemania on this very topic of celiac-thyroid connection...it's under "very interesting study on celiac..." in this related disorders section. Check it out! Very informative.

Oh yes! Did have. Not now I have my Thyroid Armour meds. Back 4 months ago I was wearing 2 thermals, 3 jumpers and a coat inside !!! And still cold. I needed a granny rug every night ! ( no central heating in Aust homes). When I learnt about Thyroid I started graphing my temp as per the Dr Rind web site, and my temps were 35.8 , 36.1 - highest ever was 36.3. Lowest was 35.1. I am titrating my Armour still, and am up to 3 1/2 grains and my temps are getting better 36.5 ... am going to add some more Armour soon. You go up 1/4 grain every 6 weeks - so it takes a while to get normal ! Good news is the weight. All my life its been a struggle and now - its all starting to melt away. I just feel so alive for the first time in years!

      Bread has about 8 g of protein per 100 g, so a piece of bread weighing 125 mg contains 10 mg of gluten. Bread has a density of about 0.25 g/ml, so 0.5 ml of bread contains 10 mg of gluten - i.e. a bread ball 1 cm in diameter. I think it would be unlikely to ingest this much from throwing bread out for the birds.

      Sciatica came to mind for me as well. You might want to get some imaging done on your C-spine.

      Maybe this is sciatica? When mine acts up a little, I switch my wallet from one back pocket to the other. this isn't a substitute for more serious medical help, but for me it's a bandaid.

      OK so I just learned something completely new about this for the first time in years, that is REALLY WEIRD. One of my nerves that likes to "burn" or whatever is doing it every time I bow my head! I mean it is completely repeatable. Literally every time. Once my head goes beyond a certain angle *boom*. Nerve goes mental (lower right leg pain). What the hell. I've never seen a direct trigger such as this before that I can recall. The pain was the usual type I get from this problem - I suspect somehow the head movement was interrupting descending inhibition processes, causing the pain to leak through somehow.

      I've only made this a couple of times but it's really easy and I love the flavor. If you can, use all of the ingredients to get the full palette of flavors. I use fresh or canned tomatoes and I don't worry about peeling them. If you don't have harissa, there are replacement recipes online. If you don't have the greens, I suggest adding a little chopped baby spinach or celery leaves to add a dash of green color to this red dish. Best eaten in first couple days because flavor tends to fade. Leftovers are still good, but not as vibrant. Ingredients 2 medium eggplants, partially peeled and cut into cubes (original recipe says 1 in, but I prefer 1/2 to 3/4 in) 2 tomatoes, peeled and crushed 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped or minced 1 tablespoon fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons spicy harissa (I use Mina brand) 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon paprika ½ teaspoon black pepper 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or lemon juice 1 tablespoon tomato paste (optional) Salt to taste Preparation     • Heat olive oil in skillet or pot over medium heat. Add all ingredients and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cover and cook on low heat for an additional 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.       • Serve warm or cold as a side or with bread for dipping. Enjoy!
