What is whey or whey protein and is it gluten-free? I made some potatoes tonight that specifically say gluten free on the bag but have whey protein in it.

I assume it's safe?

Yes--whey has to do with milk and is gluten-free. Here's what the dictionary has to say:

the watery part of milk that is separated from the coagulable part or curd especially in the process of making cheese and that is rich in lactose, minerals, and vitamins and contains lactalbumin and traces of fat
