Last night my hands were very swollen and I noticed that the vein on the top of my hand (between my index and middle fingers) is also very swollen. We checked my feet and they look ok. I've had swollen hands before, but never the vein and it got me nervous. This morning the hand swelling is a little better, but the vein is still swollen. Of course I Googled it and I am either about to burst into flames or it could be something as simple as too much salt! I did see a lot where it mentioned autoimmune issues, so I'm wondering if this is a Celiac thing? Does anyone else have this? Any ideas on what the cause is?

Oddly it's on the right hand, which is the hand I get my DH on.

I get swollen hands but I've always put it down to water retention. Who knows, this could be one more of so many things that I'm discovering has to do with coeliac disease.!

I was getting painful swollen hands and lower arms, and also throbbing patches of varicose veins in my legs this summer before I went gluten free.

I don't get DH, but I was getting rashes with at least an element of photosensitivity this summer too.

My doctor sent me to a rheumatologist, so it certainly can be an autoimmune thing, and that seemed to be where I was heading before giving up the gluten. I wouldn't have any idea about other causes though.

Within a few weeks of being gluten free, except for a warm glow/redness still on my face, these problems went away and haven't recurred, even when I accidentally got glutened.

My hands swell up along with my lower legs and face. I put it down to water retention as well and cut out all salt / salty foods.

I have had this too. My wrists and ankles will swell. I'm not yet diagnosed with Celiac, but i've had numerous xrays of both and they always come back "normal" so NO idea what's causing it.

Yeah I get swollen hands very easily, they're one of my most sensitive detectors if I've accidentally eaten something the night before. Every morning I close my hands to read my body. When I stay off of everything my hands feel soo unswollen that I can't stop closing them in amazement! My right hand swells more than my left also, like you. It may not specifically mean celiac, but it means food intolerances are in your body, which of course can be gluten because it's one of the most common food intolerances. I feel like I can tell if certain people have intolerances undiagnosed if their hands/fingers are swollen.

Also, I totally do not believe the whole salt/water retention thing about swollen hands. When I'm eating a lot of salt and not eating any food im intolerant to, it's when my hands are the least swollen. I think they have it wrong and all of these people with "water retention from salt" really just have food intolerances..
