Pain & Numbness on one side of body

Dysphagia is the term for swallowing problems.  It can be caused by Thiamine deficiency.

Thiamine is Vitamin B1.

Celiac Disease is a disease that causes malabsorption of vitamins and minerals.  Wernicke's-Korsakoff syndrome is a severe form of Thiamine deficiency, often associated with alcoholism, but seen in malabsorption.

"Severe dysphagia as the presenting symptom of Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome in a non-alcoholic man"

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18379741/

GERD is also an early symptom of low Thiamine.

Numbness in your arms and legs is another symptom of low thiamine.

Sailor's asthma, feeling like you smoked three cigars, is a symptom of low Thiamine.

All that phlegm is a symptom of low thiamine.

Thiamine is Vitamin B1.

There are Eight B vitamins.  They work together.  (For example, B12 needs B9 and B2 and B6 to work properly.)  Take a good B Complex vitamin and extra thiamine as Benfotiamine or Allithiamine.

Hope this helps.

Knowledge is power.

Hello Everyone!

So an additional update. I have been feeling more pains lately so I started popping Tylenol Extra Strength Rapid Release Gels alittle more than usual! This was what the ER doctor recommended so I didn't think any less of it. I decided to call up J&J & they tell me these do contain Gluten! It was my mistake as I searched Tylenol for gluten free, but I guess the rapid release gels do contain gluten.

So my question is, has anyone been taking Tylenol Extra Strength Rapid Release Gels (https://www.amazon.com/Tylenol-Strength-Release-Acetaminophen-Reliever/dp/B01HI7WP0U/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8)

And if so did you experience any issues? They weren't able to tell me how much gluten, but the representative said these do contain gluten. So I am assuming these pills should just be thrown in the garbage! Any feedback would be amazing as I may have just found the culprit!

So I did just call back, and the next representative said there is no gluten. So now I am very confused.... Please someone share their 2 cents on this.

Hey Guys,

In addition to the above, I wanted to see if anyone had any input on the new vitamin/supplements I got. Really trying to make sure I am not poisoning myself any further;

Vitamin B Complex- https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07414752B/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Benfotiamine (B1) - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07G7HPK39/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Magnesium Citrate - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KY6NH9A/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

None of the actual bottles state Gluten Free, except for the Benfotiamine which states no Gluten or Wheat. However, the amazon descriptions all state Gluten Free. The last 2 nights I was woken up by teeth grinding & sore jaw, as well has tight and cramping calves (both sides). It also does seem like my twitching may have gotten worse over the last few days as well as constant leg soreness. I have done a google search on all of them as well, which say Gluten Free but its not stated on the bottles, so not sure if I should trust it or not.

Side note (maybe personal); my stools have also been starting to float and smell weird again. Which was the case leading up to my diagnosis.

Any advise would be wonderful!

@BNGed8 it looks like you have your answer, and the Tylenol Extra Strength Rapid Release Gels that you were taking is the source of the trace amounts of gluten. If the other vitamins are flagged as gluten-free by Amazon they are likely gluten-free, or at least they don't contain any gluten ingredients.

@Scott Adams

Thanks for the reply!

So I had conflicting reports. The first representative told me yes, these do include gluten but when I called back for reassurance the next representative said no it doesn't. She also apologized that the previous rep would say that. Needless to say, I definitely will not be taking it anymore as I am unable to even locate any information after an extensive google search. Also saw another review saying they were unable to get a straight answer from J&J about the gluten free question too.

Does anyone have any recommendations on a gluten free substitute for pain reliever (maybe regular Tylenol?). Something that is easy on the stomach as well!

Hello All!

I am now a little over 2 months into my Celiac Journey and just had a few questions in regards to my body that feels so old now. Was hoping anyone could possibly answer and let me know if they have experienced this early in the healing or even still to this day.

I still get the twitching & muscle aches which my Neuro believes to be BFS as no weakening has really occurred in my muscles. When I mentioned if Celiac could possibly be a contributor both my GI & Neuro kind of laughed it off saying no because its very very rare for it to cause neurological symptoms. I obviously have read a handful of people on this forum could say otherwise. I have an EMG on the 31st to rule out any of the nasty.

My main questions now are, does anyone seem to bruise & or injure a lot easier now. Sometimes I wake up and notice a bruise that I didn't even realize I hit on something. Also a simple hitting my knuckle or ankle against a table hurts 100x more now than it did a couple of months ago prior to my diagnosis. I wasn't sure if anyone has experienced this or maybe it has to do with the BFS? Thinking maybe it could be caused by the loss of muscle/padding since I did lose almost 40 pounds since my onset of symptoms in May 2021? Also has anyone experienced an increase in cracking/popping noises in their joints when they move around. My ankles, knees, wrists & sometimes shoulders seem to make noises every time I move these days.

As always, any insight will help!

i have had twitching muscles and on and off pins and needles and aches - they almost disappeared after my third or fourth month of being gluten free- i’m on month 7 now waiting on my updated blood work!  my GI says i look so healthy - my eyes clear and my skin much healthier - yes these are real symptoms of celiac - they will mostly go away and return here and there but hang in there!

The neurological manifestation of celiac disease (and gluten sensitivity) is not uncommon, so I am not sure why your doctor would indicate otherwise. Here are dozens of summaries of research on this:

Hello again,

Just wanted to give another update as I had my EMG today. This came back 100% clear which has ruled out all the nasty stuff. This update is for anyone who may be going through the same exact thing as me, with the pains, twitching, throat feeling etc...

Anxiety & Celiac are not a cute couple, and can really make you feel like you have something more sinister. But no matter what someone tells you, you won't believe it until you see results! Just glad to finally be able to move forward & get through this slump!

Thanks for listening

Hello,

As of right now, its like a severe upper back and neck soreness I would describe it as. The occasional arm, chest & leg pain does occur. The only thing that gets me anxious is that it is only on the right side. What put me into the ER last week was pins and needles that turned into my whole right side from neck to my toes to feel numb. I was still able to use all affected muscles/limbs though. After the numbness went away after about 10 minutes, I felt a light burning sensation for awhile. This has since went away and now only have the soreness mentioned prior with some pains that I have had during my original Celiac diagnosis. I do get twitching in the calves, but that only seems to happen when I think about it or stare at it for awhile. It is just hard to feel this way at the age of 26 (male) that used to workout all the time. I keep trying to tell myself it is my Celiac/Deficiencies amplified by Anxiety. But as we all know, anxiety isn't the easiest to turn off.

Thank you for your reply.

When i wake up my right thigh burns and tingles, then is numb for the rest of the day. Im on gluten-free diet and diagnosed celiac 10 months ago. Legs pretty much numb all the time now. My mucles in my legs aches alot on and off even on gluten-free diet. I was glutened 16 days ago and my legs are ruined still. Calfs ache so much.

Hello Everyone,

So I just got back my Vitamin bloodwork back, and seems like my only deficiency is Vitamin D. Magnesium, B12 & iron are all good. They are all either mid range to higher levels within range. I was honestly hoping for the Magnesium deficiency to explain the muscle twitching. As mentioned prior, I do have a very low Vitamin D could this possibly lead to twitching? Does constant twitching also usually lead to sore muscles, because my calves and knees feel (more so back of knee) on fire today?

I feel like its really down to Vitamin D, Anxiety or lack of sleep (just prescribed Trazodone to help sleep). Seeing a clean test is definitely going to strike up my Anxiety, thinking it could be more serious.

Thanks again for any input.

Yes back of the left knee pain and numb burning right thigh pretty much all the time. Seems to be made worse by walking. B12 was fine, vit D and calcium slightly low, im conviced it B1 deficiency as all my other blood work was fine. Im seeing GI tomorrow, but my GP has no idea.

Hi @CC90 Ah... that is very interesting.  Although it is very annoying for you to have to go through it all again, I would say that almost sounds like an admission that they didn't look far enough last time?   I could be wrong, but I would not be at all surprised if they find something on the next attempt.  Coeliac damage can be very patchy, as I understand it, so that's why my own gastroenterologist always likes to point out that he's taken lots of samples!  In the kindest possible way (you don't want to upset the person doing the procedure!) I'd be inclined to tell them what happened last time and to ask them in person to take samples lower down, as  if your health system is anything like the one in my country, communication between GPs, consultants and hospitals isn't always very good.  You don't want the same mistake to be made again. You say that your first endoscopy was traumatic?  May I ask, looking at your spelling of coeliac, was this done at an NHS hospital in England?  The reason for the question is that one of my NHS diagnosed friends was not automatically offered a sedative and managed without one.  Inspired by her, I tried to have an endoscopy one time, in a private setting, without one, so that I could recover quicker, but I had to request sedative in the end it was so uncomfortable.    I am sorry that you will have to go through a gluten challenge again but to make things easier, ensure you eat things containing gluten that you will miss should you have to go gluten free one day. 😂 I was told to eat 2 slices of normal wholemeal bread or the equivalent every day in the weeks before , but I also opted for Weetabix and dozens of Penguin chocolate biscuits.  (I had a very tight headache across my temple for days before the procedure, which I thought was interesting as I had that frequently growing up. - must have been a coeliac symptom!)  Anyway, I do hope you soon get the answers you are looking for and do keep us posted. Cristiana

Hi Cristiana   Yes I've had the biopsy results showing normal villi and intestinal mucosa.  The repeat endoscopy (requested by the gastro doc) would be to take samples from further into the intestine than the previous endoscopy reached.

Transglutaminase IgA is the gold-standard blood test for celiac disease. Sensitivity of over 90% and specificity of 95–99%. It rarely produces false positives.  An elevated level means your immune system is reacting to gluten.  Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity (NCGS) does not typically cause high levels of tTG-IgA. Unfortunately the protocols for a diagnosis of Celiac Disease are aimed at proving you don't have it, leaving you twisting in the wind. Genetic testing and improvement on a trial gluten free diet, also avoiding milk protein, will likely show improvement in short order if it is Celiac; but will that satisfy the medical system for a diagnosis? If you do end up scheduling a repeat endoscopy, be sure to eat up to 10 grams of gluten for 8 - 12 weeks.  You want  to create maximum damage. Not a medical opinion, but my vote is yes.
    • trents
Cristiana asks a very relevant question. What looks normal to the naked eye may not look normal under the microscope.
    • cristiana
Hello @CC90 Can I just ask a question: have you actually been told that your biopsy were normal, or just that your stomach, duodenum and small intestine looked normal? The reason I ask is that when I had my endoscopy, I was told everything looked normal.  My TTG score was completely through the roof at the time, greater than 100 which was then the cut off max. for my local lab.  Yet when my biopsy results came back, I was told I was stage 3 on the Marsh scale.  I've come across the same thing with at least one other person on this forum who was told everything looked normal, but the report was not talking about the actual biopsy samples, which had to be looked at through a microscope and came back abnormal.
