I'm frustrated and not sure what's going on with me now. I've been gluten-free for about 7-8 months. Also dairy-free. I was doing really well. About over a week ago I decided to try some organic raw goat cheese, thinking maybe my stomach will tolerate it. The next day I started to have bloody diarrhea with lots of clots. I felt so sick! Anyway, so it went on like this for days but not nearly as bad as that 1st time. I made an appointment w/ my GI dr but he can't see me til end of August! I don't see blood now with my eyes but I would like for him to do more tests to see if there's more blood in the stools that naked eye can't see.

Anyway now what seems to be bothering me is severe heartburn and my throat hurts. So no more blood and clots (as far as I can tell) but now this really bad heartburn! Uggh I am so miserable, everything I eat the past week seems to bothering me. Pls help, anyone else having similar symptoms? I'm not sure if I'm being glutened or this was still from the goat cheese a week ago!

Thanks and sorry TMI. Help.

Raw meaning unpasteurized? You probably food poisoned yourself. Bloody diarrhea is a medical emergency and I'm glad you are OK. Did you tell your doctor the symptoms were associated with eating raw dairy and that you suspect food poisoning?

Campylobacter and E. coli O157:H7 can both cause bloody diarrhea and are found in raw milk. Campylobacter illness can last as long as ten days and E. coli as long as eight.

There is a REASON dairy products are required to be pasteurized for interstate commerce and I'm sorry you had to learn it the hard way.

I agree that you likely have food poisoning. Go to your regular doctor and get a stool sample taken to find out what bug may have gotten you and if it is still present. If it is a short course of antibiotics will be needed. Some of the bugs can be with you for quite a while if not treated so insist that a stool sample is done even if your doctor is reluctant. I had salmonella for weeks and my doctor insisted that my 'IBS' was just flaring up worse or I had a virus. I finally got the stool samples done and two days later got a phone call and an apology.

It said on the label unpasteurized goat milk so I'm assuming it's raw and DH bought it from Whole Foods. Shouldn't I have a fever and vomiting if I was poisoned? BTW in the past if I ate anything with even a small amount of dairy, I would get blood in the stools too. But this episode was the worst I've had.

Thanks for the reply, I'll go to my regular dr. For now I'm just really, really bothered by the constant stomachaches and severe heartburn. :(

Food poisoning was my guess until you mentioned that this has happened before in response to dairy. You need to stop eating dairy. Go see your doctor and explain that this is not a one-time thing.

Ughh I wish I didn't eat that cheese, I don't eat dairy, haven't in months and just wanted to try it. In the past I had accidental dairy exposure and had the bloody stools but never as bad as this last one.

No more dairy for me ever. Dh ate the same cheese and had no issues.

I think your wise to avoid dairy permanently if this is a common reaction for you. If DH ate the same cheese with no bad effects then it was likely IMHO that since you have been avoiding it that your body was telling you in no uncertain terms that it doesn't want you consuming dairy.

I guess it's not food poisoning. Wow, that's a strong food intolerance. So sorry it's still lingering.

My daughter used to be intolerant to dairy (she eventually grew out of it) but she couldn't tolerate goat products either. My doctor said that's very common along with soy intolerance if you're dairy intolerant.

So do you guys think the heartburn is still from the dairy?

A little history, I grew up drinking goat milk and ate regular ice cream and cheese. I was fine for a long time. The past 3-4 yrs or so I've deteriorated a lot. I've gone from being able to eat it with no problems and slowly I just got worse and worse. I was pregnant 3 yrs ago and was eating dairy with absolutely no problems. I'm just thinking what happened that things changed so fast!

Thanks everyone, have a nice day.

Oh my goodness. I guess with that serious of a reaction, it takes a while to recover! I am so sorry you feel bad and I am hoping you feel back to normal soon.

Hi There,

So sorry to hear you were so sick. I continue to be amazed at how sick food can make you?! Food allergies are no joke! I know you still have the lingering heartburn, etc... Of course I'm not a doc, but in my experiences, when I am glutened, or eat dairy, etc.... I am pretty messed up for a while. I think I'm healed, and then I'll throw up out of the blue, or I'll have terrible cramps and D. I'll think, jeze-louise, I ate so well today, and then I remember, o yeah, you're still healing from your last screw up you ding dong! LOL!

I hope that's all it is. Have you tried over the counter Zantac or Prilosec? You can get generic versions at Target or Wal-Mart that are much cheaper, and they can do wonders for heartburn. When I get heartburn, the standard stuff doesn't touch my pain (tums, mylanta, etc...) I have to go straight for the big guns, and for me that's Zantac. Good luck!

I have gastritis and sometimes if I eat something I shouldn't have or take too much Advil it will cause that to flare up and I'll get heartburn. It takes several days for the heartburn to go away. I would guess given the severity of your symptoms that the dairy irritated your entire GI tract and the heartburn is a lingering symptom. Definately tell your doctor how severe your reaction was!

@Aretaeus Cappadocia thank you for your reply and the link, that is very helpful to get a visual of just how small of an amount can cause a reaction. I know I am not consuming gluten or coming into contact with gluten from any other source. I will stop touching/tossing bread outside! My diet has not changed, and I do not have reactions to the things I am currently eating, which are few in number. My auto immune reaction just seems so severe. The abdominal pain is extreme. It takes a lot out of me. I guess I will be this way for the rest of my life if I ever happen to come into contact with gluten? I appreciate the help.

Thankyou I did find out the Infectious disease is the route to go rather than dermatologist. I did reach out to two major hospitals and currently waiting on approval for one of them in Infectious Diseases to call me. I also did have implants ( I didn't know and sense not properly in my medical. Neither did surgeon)in 2006 and there was a leak 2023 during the same time I was dealing with covid, digestive issues, eyes and skin.Considering I " should  be fine" not consuming gluten/wheat, taking vitamins for sibo and STILL feeling terrible. It has to be parasites. I also take individual eye drops prescribed, could there be an issue there? Anyways my pcp thinks I need therapy because again they don't acknowledge my digestive issues because in my records it shows im fine, hintz the reason I had to go back to bay area hospital:(  I thought skin issues maybe sibo related but I feel and have seen and seriously trying not to think about it because it's disgusting.

oops. I didn't see that before posting or I would have at least referenced it. The two recipes are pretty similar, but I think the newer one is a little simpler/faster. Next time though I will search more before posting.

The following two lists are very helpful for anyone who is gluten sensitive and needs to avoid gluten when shopping. It's very important to learn to read labels and understand sources of hidden gluten, and to know some general information about product labelling--for example in the USA if wheat is a possible allergen it must be declared on a product's ingredient label like this: Allergens: Wheat.
