Where? Why? Whine!

I got it today. I'm retracing, and once again, I can't figure it out. I'm dumb as a rock in my brain after getting glutened too. Sorry for the bad sentences.

Coco pebbles and Silk Soy for breakfast. Work at the hospital. Smelled hot gluten, but moved right away. 3 minutes of exposure. Grocery store. Booked it through the bakery. Lady cooking something in the meat department. Smelled good. Felt sick. avoided the smell. Held breath through flour aisle. Yawned and yawned. Checked out and yawned some more. Ate a Laura bar on the way home. Got home and told hubby grocery store makes me sick. Cleaned kitchen. Cheek to cheek kissed 2 year old niece. Cooked dinner ground turkey, mushrooms onion, pino grigio, gluten-free broth. bob's flour, rice noodles. Wine wiht dinner. Getting sicker. Sicker Sicker.

Everyone left, as the night went on, I'm wanting to cry. Excedrine helps now, but Where ?Why? Seriously, if it was the grocery store, how will I make it through life avoiding gluten smells? I'll be housebound. Whine Whine Whine.

Called in to work for 1/2 day tomorrow. Eaten gluten always worse day 2/3. Airborne might be better. This is the worst since the restaraunt poisoning 4 months ago.

Is it better to call in sick or shadow another professional and talk & think like an idiot? I won't remember anything she says. Have to shadow on Tuesday too. Must do that one no matter what. She won't understand this gluten thing. I explained it 3 months ago, and she gave me the crazy look. Eats flying crackers for lunch too.

I hate that mean wheat man on the right side of the advertisement bar. Evil amber waves of grain. O and So Delicious Ice cream this evening. I like that. I ate it too.

Thaks for listening to the ramble. I hope you all avoid the evil wheat man and his gluey gluten.

I don't get sick until the next day, sometimes not bad until the 2nd day after being glutened. Could it have been something you ate the day before?

Especially feeling sick and then started yawning... I'm thinking it may have happened before the flour aisle?

It's not fair and not right!..............When you get glutened this way, It sucks.....and especially having to suffer for days to come because of it...

and I agree with you... that gluten man freaks me out too...lol..

it's amazing how you can even hate a picture of wheat!............I wish there was something to take away the pain... I know how depressing it all becomes... and how sick you can feel...

We need a magic way of thinking, when this happens to us, to help us get through it.............

Went to daughters house for cookout Sat. night. They both made gluten-free appetizers just for me. Got gluttened! It just must be that the gluten in thier homes just gets into everything. I'm going to have to tell them not to bother- it isn't worth being sick to not hurt thier feelins, and I cannot expect them to have gluten-free homes. Oh, family. I LOVE THEM SO MUCH IT HURTS! The up side of it all is that it was so nice in Ohio in March that we could have a cookout. There's always an up side. Susan

Hi SGW,

Sorry you got sick :( I wonder if you may have already been reacting from breakfast (or even the night before). Cocoa Pebbles--maybe you got a batch made right after running gluten? Have you eaten from this box before?

What about dinner the night before? Anything there that may be suspicious?

I'm super sensitive, but have never had a reaction from the smell of gluten (inhaling actual flour dust would cause it though).

I know it's so hard to backtrack and try and figure out a culprit. Just throwing out a couple ideas......hope you feel better soon :)

I've had two occassions that I didn't eat anything, but was 15 feet from several pizzas and the same for a potluck. Both times, I got neuro symptoms and left the room. That is how I knew to leave as soon as I smelled the panini maker cooking lunch for the ladies at work.

Thanks for thinking about the pebbles. I can't remember if the box was new.

3 weeks in a row, I've suspected the grocery store. I wonder if they were baking with flour in the morning or while I was there. Hubby has offered to go the next few times. I think it might be so he can pick up some real cookies.

I'm feeling 90% better now. It seems the times I can't figure out what it was, it lasts only a day or so. When I can trace it back to something I ate, it lasts 5-10 days.

Thanks for the sympathy. I really needed some. People at work asked what I reacted to. I sounded crazy saying I don't know. maybe the grocery store. I think they would understand If I said it was a shellfish allergy.

I got it too... well i was just hungry and had some chips and cookies bad idea. I have close to a 24hr jam packed day ahead of me and really hopinh cos i only got a small amount there is no d :angry::( other than that i dont get sick

Can't help but wonder about those kisses from a two-yr-old. I am also ridiculously sensitive but would not react to breathing baking things UNLESS you could see flour in the air. Like Patti, I'd suspect the Bob's Red mIll (others here have had cc issues with them) or the Cocoa Pebbles. My kids eat them and they are in my gluten-free house, but they are not run (I don't think) on dedicated lines. Sadly, you may be a "super-sensitive".

Also, soy could be an issue...

This may sound crazy, but if the grocery store continues to make you sick and you REALLY don't want to have to give up going there, consider a respirator mask. Not the little white ones like doctors wear, but a full mask with a filter--the kind of thing painters wear when they have to strip lead paint. I don't know the particulate size of gluten/flour dust, but a good filter mask will deal with pretty small stuff. I did a little research on them back when everybody was talking about bird flu and how to protect themselves during an epidemic.

If you don't mind people looking at you like you're crazy, :lol: and if the only alternative is staying home, it may be worth it.

Not as crazy as it might sound to others. We gave one to my sister as a Christmas present :lol: She is extremely sensitive to herbicide and pesticide sprays and was becoming a prisoner in her home. Initially she wore it down the drive to get the mail and the newspaper, then when she was out gardening. She says it really works. We recently had to trrack down a new filter for her. She has gotten used to her neighbours' stares and they have gotten used to seeing her in it.

I'm sorry that you got glutened. Staying sane through a hunger attack without giving in to the cravings is so difficult isn't it. Best of wishes taking care of yourself as you get over your glutening and busy time at work. Canned Fruit, a mini opener, and Laura Bars have saved me on several occassions. I also have mini snack packs at work that I can just add hot water to if I ever get in a bind. I've used them when my lunch has gotten CC'ed or I didn't pack enough.

I'm feeling pretty much back to my version of normal. I'm sending hubby to the grocery this week and staying away from all gluten smells. I'll be keeping track of my cheek/cheek kisses with my niece and my grocery store exposure to see if there is a relationship with my flares.

I'm certain I'm in the super sensitive group and also wondering if I might have another autoimmune that is flaring when I can't find the gluten source. I've played with being on and off soy. The only problems it seems to give me is gas if I have more than 1 1/2 servings in a day. I don't feel different. I was tested a few years ago for corn allergies, and passed that one. If I still have problems, I might start playing around with that one.

Thanks for the suport. It feels good to have some people who will understand. I just got the crazy lady playing hookie look from the people I work with.

      OK so I just learned something completely new about this for the first time in years, that is REALLY WEIRD. One of my nerves that likes to "burn" or whatever is doing it every time I bow my head! I mean it is completely repeatable. Literally every time. Once my head goes beyond a certain angle *boom*. Nerve goes mental (lower right leg pain). What the hell. I've never seen a direct trigger such as this before that I can recall. The pain was the usual type I get from this problem - I suspect somehow the head movement was interrupting descending inhibition processes, causing the pain to leak through somehow.

      I've only made this a couple of times but it's really easy and I love the flavor. If you can, use all of the ingredients to get the full palette of flavors. I use fresh or canned tomatoes and I don't worry about peeling them. If you don't have harissa, there are replacement recipes online. If you don't have the greens, I suggest adding a little chopped baby spinach or celery leaves to add a dash of green color to this red dish. Best eaten in first couple days because flavor tends to fade. Leftovers are still good, but not as vibrant. Ingredients 2 medium eggplants, partially peeled and cut into cubes (original recipe says 1 in, but I prefer 1/2 to 3/4 in) 2 tomatoes, peeled and crushed 4 garlic cloves, finely chopped or minced 1 tablespoon fresh flat-leaf parsley, chopped 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil 2 tablespoons spicy harissa (I use Mina brand) 1 teaspoon cumin 1 teaspoon paprika ½ teaspoon black pepper 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar or lemon juice 1 tablespoon tomato paste (optional) Salt to taste Preparation     • Heat olive oil in skillet or pot over medium heat. Add all ingredients and cook for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cover and cook on low heat for an additional 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.       • Serve warm or cold as a side or with bread for dipping. Enjoy!       I checked consumer labs that I'm a member of they independently check products for safely and claims the wolfs was rated great and bobs redmill buckwheat cereal. Ultra low gotten no dangerous levels of arsenic heavy metals, mold, yeast etc. plus they mention to refrigerate. I wonder if the raw buckwheat they rinse bc it's not toasted like kasha. Toasted removes the grassy taste I have to try the one you mentioned. I also bought Qia which is a quinoa mixed got great reviews.
