Celiac.com - Celiac Disease & Gluten-Free Diet Support Since 1995

Everything posted by Beverage

  1. Based on when I had weird symptoms in my first year at college at age 17, I could have had Celiac's since then. I was not diagnosed until age 58. And I do have some ongoing issues that one by one we are figuring out they are mostly related to vitamin deficiencies. Although I am taking several thousand IU of D3 supplements, my D was still on the low end...
  2. You should really read the newbie section in here. Contamination of cooking devices like bread makers is a real problem. Also if you have non-stick cooking pans or any cast iron (unless enamel coated like Le Creuset), they should be donated to somebody else, as they hold onto glutens of the past and are not safe for you. I donated my panini maker and waffle...
  3. BEFORE I went gluten free, I used to get food stuck all the time. It wouldn't go up, it wouldn't go down. That quickly went away after going gluten-free. After a few years of being gluten-free I started getting hoarse throat and severe asthma. Went to specialists, nothing worked for the asthma except predisone / steroids and all those made my blood...
  4. I wasn't going to mention the oats, I figured the dietitian would inform you. My naturopathic doc who diagnosed me with Celiac's told me not to eat it, that we could try it in 3 months or so after some healing, but I was stubborn and insisted. I even got the purity protocol oats that are grown and transported and processed in super magical conditions to...
  5. Good luck with your tests. You will do great. One thing you can start on without changing your diet yet is to think of "normal food" as you call it, as whole food, real food, meat veggies and fruit. That's what our bodies were built for. Processed foods and grains came about much later. Get in tough with your caveman side. ? Stay in touch.
  6. I'm a big fan of the Bare Minerals powder type mineral foundations you buff on. Afterglow Cosmetics is a gluten free brand. I don't have scars or discoloration but my sister does, and she loves it and it doesn't feel heavy like liquid foundation.
  7. Also read about the connection between TOO LITTLE stomach acid and GERD / acid reflux. Good articles out there by Dr Jonathan Wright a leading naturopathic doctor. This was my problem, the fumes from not having enough acid and food rots instead of digests, irritates the sphincter which allows sulphur fumes to work way up esophagus irritating throat sinuses...
  8. Thank you. All very good points. That's me, no intestinal symptoms but after a few weeks of unknowingly consuming gluten, I finally feel like I've been hit by a truck. We're all different.
  9. Cumulative throughout the day, not over a long period of time. Sorry for the confusion.
  10. Everything I have read is that getting to the point of triggering an autoimmune response IS CUMULATIVE. So 1 bit here, 1 there, 1 bit after, it adds up and then bam you have a reaction. And some may react on less than others. Moderators or those more experienced, please chime in. Oh heck, I just did an internet search, and yes, it is cumulative. ...
  11. My blood results were very high, so I went with that, positive on the DNA test, and the results from a gluten free diet to get an official medical diagnosis. I agree with the others, though that in your case, the endoscopy is probably needed, although can get false negatives on it, as it's been talked about many times in here. After that, you might end...
  12. As my doctor said when I was diagnosed ... anything you touch can end up in your mouth ... your eyes, ears, nose, and mouth all drain down to your stomach ! Don't forget it.
  13. Formulas change all the time. The problem with it not being labeled gluten-free is that if one of the ingredients (like the tocopherol) which might be currently from a non-gluten source, can be changed to be from a gluten source, and so you would have to call then every time you bought a new bottle.
  14. I recommend Andalou skin products, which are marked "gluten verified." I've never had any problems. If you sign up for their newsletter, they send out discounts for ordering on their internet site.
  15. I react to oats the same as wheat, rye, and barley. The protein strand in oats is apparently the next closest to the other 3.
  16. I'm so sorry it's so hard. I felt like I was hit by a truck, a really big truck, when I first went gluten free. Like the worst flu on the planet. Before I went gluten free, I had a lot of weight gain but it was all inflammation and I lost 30 lbs in a few weeks, but it was all water. I was very weak at the end of it, but on the road to recovery. Drink lots...
  17. I don't eat anything unless it's whole food or labeled gluten free, certified gluten free is best. I do get my nuts from Nuts.com, they have a gluten free section, labeled gluten free but not certified. They ship super fast and everything is fresher than I've ever tasted nuts before, except those I picked and shelled myself. You can sign up for their newsletter...
  18. You are a big sweetie to be so concerned and willing to try. Ennis listed a lot of things that are very important. Any herbs and spices need to be labeled gluten free, those have been shown to be contaminated otherwise. It's not only the food and ingredients, it's the world that the food was prepared in. Don't serve any other gluten foods...
  19. Hi, decclj. For me, I did not want to go with the endoscopy because I just did not want to do the prep and I hate getting knocked out. In the US, my doctor was able to give me an official diagnosis of Celiac's Disease based on these 3 factors: 1) positive blood screening test 2) celiac gene in DNA test and 3) response to the gluten free diet (felt better...
  20. Be careful with budesonide. I was on it and it made my blood pressure go up to very dangerous levels.
  21. Maeve...you astonish me.
  22. I apologize. I cannot find the article. Searching past articles on this site is not as easy as I thought. I am 99% sure it was in the newsletter, about a year or so ago. I just remember I was totally shocked about the risk of getting glutened regularly. It talked about getting gluten once a month regularly...NOT for celiac's that adhere to a gluten free...
  23. Hi. It was in an article in the celiac.com newsletter. I am on my mobile now. I will try to look for it later when I get home.
  24. Just so you know, there is someone else here (me) who does not get symptoms from ingesting gluten one time here and there. I have done it NOT intentionally, but it did happen because I reached for the wrong package of something. No symptoms. I have Celiac's. If I eat gluten for a whole month, I do not get intestinal symptoms like you would think, but...
  25. How did you get the test done? Through your doctor? On your own through an internet site? I went with a company in Canada and it took almost a month.
