More Hotel Restaurants Go Gluten-free
trents commented on Jefferson Adams's article in Additional Concerns
Very encouraging! But I note those hotel chains who are going this direction are the pricier ones.- 3 comments

Gluten-Free Prescription Medications and Dietary Supplements
trents commented on Sarah Curcio's article in Autumn 2021 Issue
And the problem with generics is that the dispensing pharmacy will often switch manufacturers to get better prices. That and the fact that much of our medication is manufactured in China which makes it difficult to monitor compliance with allergen concerns.- 6 comments

Okay, thanks for explaining that. I suspected you were in the UK but wasn't sure. "Mum" gives it away. -

Three slices of wheat bread daily should be sufficient to give a valid test in February. "(I'm under 18 so I'll have to do the tests)." I don't understand this. Are you saying you have no say in your medical decisions as a minor? Where do your parents stand on this? -

Understanding the Marsh scale for evaluating damage to the small bowel lining: https://www.verywellhealth.com/marsh-stage-of-celiac-disease-562711 Tiwa, both your bloodwork and your Marsh evaluation indicate you have celiac disease but it appears you have caught it in the early stages. I'm afraid I disagree with you doctor's advice. Why torture yourself... -
Cucumbers, zucchini and Apple's
trents replied to Daphne do's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Supermarket apples are dipped in wax to make them shiny but I don't know that the wax contains gluten. I do not know if the other veggies you mention are dipped in wax. I have never heard that. -
Ttg levels went up 20 month old

Ah! The stomach bug. I would guess that could cause inflammation of the small bowel lining. At any rate, I would have those tests repeated. The higher numbers could be a temporary anomaly. -
Scott Adams' Story of His Diagnosis of Celiac Disease
trents commented on Scott Adams's article in Diagnosis, Testing & Treatment
With oats, there is a strong suspicion that cross contamination with gluten-containing grains is not the only issue. Some will tell you that about 10% of celiacs react to the oat protein, avenin.- 173 comments

Ttg levels went up 20 month old
trents replied to Laulau's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
It's very common for celiacs to be intolerant of dairy. In many cases, once there has been healing of the villi, dairy can be added back in. Something to think about. -

With the Celiac Disease Comprehensive panel you give only the tTG-IGA. A comprehensive panel will have several tests designed to detect celiac disease. Did you leave out some? The IGA:70 line is not really a test for detecting celiac disease. It is just the total IGA count. That can be significant if it is low because it can give false negatives to the celiac... -
Negative test results, especially those in the IGA family, can be caused by low total IGA counts. It's good that your doctor ran a full celiac panel that can detect celiac disease in this situation. Also, some people's immune response to celiac disease is atypical. This might help in understanding what tests can be run for celiac disease and the strength...

Scott Adams' Story of His Diagnosis of Celiac Disease
trents commented on Scott Adams's article in Diagnosis, Testing & Treatment
First of all, please realize that gluten sensitivity being a precursor to celiac disease is a theory/suspicion but not a scientific fact. Second, celiac disease is not an allergy. It is an autoimmune disorder and I'm not sure that gluten sensitivity is actually an allergy either. These things involve different pathways in the immune system. So allergy testing...- 173 comments

TTG IGA numbers for son not going down
trents replied to Wilsontribe5's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Maybe you should take this slight stomach ache more seriously. And if it's not from gluten it could be from dairy. I'm not talking about lactose intolerance which generally produces diarrhea. Lactose is the sugar in milk. I'm talking about a gluten-like reaction to the dairy protein casein. "The most common cause of villous atrophy in people with celiac... -

Tiwa, You have a choice. You can ignore this new reality, enjoy your food and friends, and probably be able to pull it off for a while without a lot of physical discomfort. But over time it will catch up to you and as more damage is done to your small bowel lining from the celiac disease, the symptoms will worsen and their may be more collateral damage... -
Blood tests and symptoms

Tiwa, welcome to the forum! To the contrary, you actually do have a grocery list of typical celiac symptoms. I'm not sure why you say you don't. Most of the symptoms you list are common and/or classic for celiac disease. Your blood test antibody numbers are not strikingly high but high enough to be unequivacable and they are increasing. Your... -

My Experience Post Diagnosis
trents replied to AKohlmeyer's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
If you are still using oats and dairy you might try eliminating these as their are proteins in these two that blunt the villi of the small bowel for some celiacs as does gluten. "I took those yearly tests at the gastroenterologist that somehow told you if you had been eating gluten-free(never really understood how that worked) and passed." Are you talking... -
I would also add to what Kate333 said and point out that prolonged emotional distress can be the trigger which activates latent celiac genes.

I'm not sure how reliable stool sample testing is. Eating out is probably the single most risky environment for those trying to eat gluten free. Studies have shown this. There are just too many variables in food preparation and handling in a restaurant setting to ever feel you can have control and are eating safely. It is likely that kitchen staff will vary... -

Get back to us when you have test results. It is disgusting how we get blown off by so many in the medical community. I know they are under pressure from the insurance companies and government to minimize healthcare costs and increase patient volumes in a way that the previous generation of physicians did not have to cope with but still . . . -

Under the circumstances, I agree with your decision. The proof is in the pudding anyway. If eliminating gluten from your diet causes significant improvement in your symptoms you have all the answers you need. I just want to forewarn you that truly eating gluten free is much more of a challenge than most people realize as how gluten shows up in the food supply...
