  1. It had to have been no more than 2 months ago when I last bought Ortega hard taco shells which were labeled gluten free. Now I can't find them. I have been to 2 of the 3 stores in my town and while there are Ortega hard taco shells at both stores; none of them say gluten free on the box. Publix has the shelf tags that contain the price as well as a gluten-free symbol for the gluten-free products. The gluten-free shelf tag was still there but the Ortega taco shells in that slot did not carry the gluten-free claim on the box. The ingredients on the box do not indicate gluten at all. On Thursday the 15th, I used the contact form on the Ortega site to inquire if they had changed their gluten-free labeling policy. I would have called them but their contact info. does not include a phone #. My email to them has not been answered. I really thought 7 working days would have seen an answer from them & I'm disappointed they have not replied. Ortega is owned by B & G Foods. After much searching I finally found a phone # for them this evening. I will call them on Monday. BTW, the phone # is 888-887-3268. The Ortega website no longer shows the box with the gluten-free labeling. B & G Foods used to have a gluten free list but that list no longer exists. There is no gluten-free information on either site, not even in the FAQ's section. There is no search box for either site so you can't search for info. about gluten-free. I am really craving some tacos for lunch tomorrow! I do not like Old El Paso taco shells and I can't find any Mission shells. The Ortega are sooooooooooooo much better than Old El Paso IMO. I was wondering if anyone else had noticed the absence of the gluten-free claim on the Ortega boxes or if you have managed to get any response from the company in this regard or if you have eaten any of the boxes that are not labeled gluten-free.

I know there are many people on here who have soy intolerances in addition to Celiac, but I'm wondering if anyone else (non-intolerant) is concerned about use of soy in substitute foods, etc.   I know it's wiser to eat whole foods and not processed, but as a busy working mom and one who likes to eat gluten-free versions of what my family is eating, I admit to eating quite a bit of processed gluten-free pasta, breads, etc.  As a result, I've often wondered if I've been increasing my intake of soy (estrogenic) and brown rice (arsenic) to dangerous levels, whether in soy/rice flours or other ingredients.   Well, now I'm facing a biopsy of something that may very well be the result of too much post-menopausal estrogen and I'm a bit worried that this is the due to higher soy consumption since my diagnosis 2 1/2 years ago.  Has anyone experienced this?  Or looked into it?    
  3. I have been gluten free for 6 years now and was doing really well until I got a bad glutening about 6 months ago. Since then I have gotten better only to get sick over and over again. I would get sick for about a week then feel better for about a week and get sick again! This has been happening for months now. I went to my wellness dr and he suspected I have a soy allergy now so I have been avoiding soy for a week but I'm sick again! I have been eating some processed foods but I always make sure it is certified gluten free and I check for soy now too. I don't think it's cross contamination, I'm pretty good about that. I also wonder if it is my anxiety. I get bad anxiety when glutened and since I have been sick so much I've been have lots of anxiety. Do you think my anxiety is causing my diarrhea? I'm just so sick of being sick now and miss the days I felt healthy and happy. Has anyone had a similar experience? Any suggestions on what I should do? How many of you developed a soy allergy years after tolerating soy ? For now I'm going to eat clean, no processed food, and talk to my shrink about upping my anxiety meds.
  4. Does anyone have experience with the 365 Everyday Value essential oils from Whole Foods? I purchased the 100% pure peppermint oil but it is not labelled gluten free and multiple calls to the company have gotten me no responses. I have no idea about oils and if they are something that could or would be cross-contaminated and if this brand is known to be safe or troublesome? Thanks in advance!
  5. i am recently diagnosed and have had a really hard time find baking mixes that taste good. a friend shared bag of mix she got after reading a review from  - the mix is called versameal genesis 1 baking blend. It made a real difference in my life.  It seems like something that's really different - it tastes like regular whole grain really amazing.  just wondering if anyone else has tried this - it really seems like something new and different - this is the review i was talking about    would love to know if anyone else here has tried it - i have the baking blend and just ordered the bread blend - it made a real difference for me so just wanted to pass it along
  6. Hi, my 7 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with Celiac disease and is lactose intolerant. I am new to all this, and would like suggestions on foods that kids might like and the best places to buy them at. Also, is Trader Joe's cheaper than Whole Foods? Could you tell me the pros and cons? Can I find some of the same gluten free and dairy free foods and Walmart? Thanks so much!

Hi All,   I was just wondering if any of you have had much experience with and/or success with cultured foods.   Have you had any improvements from eating/drinking them?   Does culturing them help you to be able to eat foods that you otherwise wouldn't be able to eat?     I have had some great results so far from various types of cultured food. It's one of the only ways I have been able to eat many vegetables until just recently. I can eat sourdough bread made out of rice flour, and milk that has been made into kefir.   I would love to hear other peoples experiences.

Hi All, Please forgive me if this is a redundant question, but it was very difficult to search the forum for this info.   Does anyone know what seeing the Celiac Disease Foundation stamp on the side of a box really mean? Does it mean that they support the product or simply that the company has given money to the foundation and is allowed to put its name on the side of their box?   Does it mean that the food is tested?   So far, I have felt comforted when I have spotted this on a food item.  But, I really don't know if it means anything!    Thanks- Shellie
  9. I had a TERRIBLE reaction to the "Food Should Taste Good" sweet potato chips, and I'm not sure why. Ingredients: Stone Ground Corn, High Oleic Sunflower Oil and/or Safflower Oil, Sweet Potato, Corn Bran, Evaporated Cane Juice, Sea Salt I've eaten these chips on several different occasions, but I always had something else I blamed the reaction on. Twice I thought I had been glutened, but this past week it would have been highly unlikely so I looked back over and realized they were all times I had eaten these chips. The reaction each time started out as strong brain fog, which grew worse every day and made me really angry and severely depressed, to the point of suicidal ideation. I got extremely tired and had bad stomach pains, bloating, muscle pain/weakness and diarrhea. I took a charcoal yesterday while in agony after eating the chips, and half an hour later the depression began to lift. Today was the first day I didn't eat them and my stomach is still a little messed up but overall I'm okay. But now I'm completely terrified at how much it affected me mentally. I was so depressed I could barely speak. I haven't felt that bad in years- I wrote a suicide note! I'm really worried about how completely it had me under its spell, and I'm afraid to try new things for fear of what it will do to my mental state. I don't even know which ingredient it was that did it, but I'm assuming either sweet potato or corn. How is it possible that food can do that to a person? Has anyone else experienced this? How do I determine which ingredient it is without putting myself at risk?

  12. I'm wondering if anyone maintains a list of safe foods and where they can be found? I can do web searches but then find products that are not available locally. Lots of items can be ordered online but then comparing costs gets complicated. If this isn't a resource currently available, how could it be suggested to a reputable celiac organization? I don't think it would require lots of research, the community can contribute. I find myself getting confused because there isn't a way to see products like this: Manufacturer, Item, Retailer, Cost comparison by appropriate size or weight w/ shipping and tax. I have to keep costs down. So with my bad eyesight, I search with one window open to find if there is a gluten free product, another for the manufacturers information, cost and ordering information, and several more to comparison shop. Then I have a window to find if it's available at the local store. Oh yes, and I have to have the calculator open at all times along with notepad so my brain can keep track but that doesn't account for shipping and tax variations. To quote Charlie Brown... "Aaarrgghh!"
  13. Hey all, i was just diagnosed with celiac and was looking at candy and some other foods that contain wheat and or they are processed on things that contain wheat. Such as m&ms they have a pretzel m&ms, have twix and kit kat bars they all contain wheat but they don't say they have wheat in them or that they were processed on the same machines or in the same facility as a facility that processes wheat but they do say contain peanuts or may contain peanuts Why do candies and other things not have to say contain wheat or may contain wheat? What should I do? I've been staying away from the things that don't have a warning but since not all gluten free items say gluten free then I just read then carefully. Please help me!
  14. hi all my name is joe ! anyhow i am 27 years old and in around September i kept feeling mysteriously ill and getting alot of anxiety and depression mainly anxiety and feeling ill all the time, sick dizzy a feeling of not myself stomach pains and cramps alot of feeling ill after eating someday ok other days very bad flu like symptoms feeling foggy in the head panic attacks 2 of my main symptoms where red eyes or like a blood shot eye and post nasal drip constant swallowing basically i want feeling well lol in lots of ways anyway i noticed in around December January that i would feel ill after eating certain types of foods pastry ect and other things so around 2 and a half weeks ago the anxiety had gotten good and i decided after reading about celiac and gluten intolerance to compleatly cut out gluten even in condiments toothpaste i cut it completely out the very nexy day i still felt abit ill but slightly less i then felt iller than before i almost like withdrawal symptoms they soon went and i didnt feel ill any more my red eyes that where red almost everyday compleatly went the post nasel drip stopped almost other night with the red eyes and i didnt feel sick after eating anymore my stools started to look better and within a week i was feeling great like i hadent felt in a long while then 5 days ago i eat somethings that contain glutain without knowing i let my guard down and within one hour i started to feel sick and then i had ditherer bad aswell i felt very anxious the next day i felt sick ill had slightly red eyes and the post nasel drip was back the day after that i felt abit dizzy and very sick afetr eating and more runny stools then the day after i felt a bit better then we get to today post nasil drip has gone ted eyes gone anxiety good no depression and dont feel sick atall doctor thinks i have had a virus along with anxiety but the nutritionist thinks the proofs in the pudding and i am gluten sensitive ok sorrry for lack of punctuation as i am not good at typing thanks for reading my post i have enjoyed learning about celiac and what i can and cant eat i would like really for as people with epericance your thoughts on what i have gone throgh kind regards joe

Recently started looking into what nuts and seeds might be safe for me to eat.  Already established that Planter's nuts (made by Kraft) have labeling that I trust, and I seem to be tolerating Planter's nuts quite well.  I sent out queries to a few additional common companies.  Here are their replies, for those who might also benefit from this info.  I'm going to see if I can get Blue Diamond to give me some more info re: their actual *almonds,* not just their nut thins, and if I get a reply I'll post it here as well. I was diagnosed with Celiac Nov. 2012.  I began the gluten-free diet right off.  I am still having a lot of GI issues and I have to run to the bathroom a lot for a sick stomach (D).  Any recommendations on foods I can eat that are easy to digest and will help with the healing process?  I am keeping a food journal to try and figure out what is agreeing and disagreeing with my body.  Also, I gave up dairy, coffee, and alcohol to try and help promote the healing. I am also taking a special mulitvitamin that has probiotics and digestive enzymes formulated for people with Celiac.  Thanks for any and all help. 
  17. I usually eat the 85% Lindt chocolate bars as my sweet treat for the day (a piece of the bar, not the whole thing!). Recently the stores where I live (Japan) are not carrying it! I have tried others but I don't like them or they state produced in factories with wheat. Today I decided to try to make my own using cocoa powder, coconut oil, sugar and vanilla. It was something I found online. It turned out surprisingly good but a bit "grainy" from the sugar. Has anyone made their own chocolate or have any tried and true recipes????
  18. Sorry if this has already been posted, but I'm absolutely stunned. I saw a message on another board today claiming that Good Seasons Italian Dressing dry mix, which I've used since I was a kid and love, now has wheat. I went by the store and sure enough, Kraft has added soy sauce with wheat to the mix. The box of packets I bought a couple of months ago does not have soy sauce. Anybody who uses this product needs to be aware of the change. I also intend to contact Kraft. richard
  19. I just found out about my Celiac about a month ago and have been adjusting fairly well to the gluten-free diet and, for the most part, am feeling much better. However, I'm getting REALLY bad nausea and upset stomach (diarrhea, exhaustion, acid reflux) whenever I eat a lot of different food that don't have gluten. I haven't really been glutened except for a few times there was a dirty pot or my roommate left crumbs out and I had severe cramping and bloating that doesn't feel like this does. I'm writing this after having eaten some gluten-free mac and cheese that I made last night, that also made me feel incredibly ill then but I thought it was just because I had a long day. None of the ingredients are spoiled and I checked for CC. All that was in it was corn noodles, Smart Balance light, cheddar cheese, Bob's gluten-free flour, milk, chex, and salt/pepper. Could it be that I have lactose intolerance? I understand that's fairly common amongst us. Is it just that those with Celiac are just oftentimes ill by things? I'm new to this, so I'd really appreciate the help.
