Just figured out I was gluten sensitive and lactose intolerant in March 2012 after years of escalating discomfort and deteriorating health. I feel so much better, but I still find it hard to believe that my body can't tolerate my culture's staple foods!
When I found out what was happening to me I immediately went gluten free (and lactose free). I was hungry all the time and couldn't get enough to eat. I spent hours wandering around the grocery store reading labels, trying to find food that I could both eat and afford to buy. It was depressing, but only a little because I physically felt much better.
I don't go to restaurants anymore and I cook almost all of my own food now. I have a bunch of international friends who are teaching me to make their favorite meals, which are often gluten free. I lost a few pounds, but I have now adapted to my new diet, I have enough food, and I am not hungry all the time. I still love and miss the taste of bread, but am no longer tempted by it. Now I am eating healthier and feeling better than ever before!
