School Starts

My son's school started today, although it's just a half day and a party. He's in 11th grade now and it's his first time to drive himself. Eeek! I've dreaded this day.Last Sunday night we had a teenager die in our neighborhood. The driver was a 16 y.o. who just got his license the week before. His 15 y.o. friend was on the passenger side and a 14 y.o. boy was in the back. The main road coming into our neighborhood is two lanes both ways. As it passes our cul-de-sac it runs N/S and traveling

Support Group

The nearest support group to where I live is over an hour away. I called the national association months ago saying I wanted to start one here, and they said they would call me back, but never did.A few weeks ago I found a gluten-free hot dog place (they have regular and gluten free buns because the owner's kid is celiac). I talked to the owner and told her I wanted to set up a support group and we could meet in her restaurant. She said she would start mentioning it to customers (she's a new bus

Now I'm A Believer...

I didn't really believe that hair or cosmetic products could make you ill....after yesterday's little incident with the hair gel...I'm a convert....today's task is to root out all my cosmetic products. I feel great now, though...My husband's response was, boy, now we know how sensitive you are. Thanks, hunny.Baby's crying...life continues...~Erin

The One That Should've Changed It All

Well, I was diagnosed with celiac disease when I was 2 years old, and I am now 23. When I was younger, my parents always made sure I stayed on a gluten-free diet, but I found ways to sneak food, like cookies and cake. I was constantly losing weight and having horrible diarhea but my parents thought I was on a gluten free diet, so they couldn't figure it out. Well, when I was about 10 I went to a skating party with some of my friends. There was a sleepover afterwards, but I didn't make it to

Ikea

My daughter and I planned to go to the grand opening of the new Ikea store in the Dallas area yesterday. We were getting ready to go, but thankfully my daughter was listening to the radio and they were talking about the opening. They said that all the parking places were full and that the line to get in was all the way around the bldg.I hate crowds like that so we decided not to go. It's about a 30 minute drive for us so I would have been annoyed if I drove all that way and then wasn't able t

Eyes

I don't like to write about health problems because when I actually write them down, I sound like a poor unhealthy sot...which I'm not. In fact, I've been remarkably healthy for someone who's unknowingly had a disease all her life. But I'm going to talk about my eyes. In addition to celiac disease, eye problems run in my family. It's a retina detachment disease called Waggoner-Steckler (sp?). My uncle has told me that the disease is named after our family (some claim to fame, huh?) becau

Bargain Hunting!

Yesterday was a great day! I was exiting the grocery store and they had a grocery cart out with discounted items. In it were about 8 boxes of 1lb boxes of sweet rice flour! Wow, how lucky am I? That's .50 cheaper than at the Asian market. The funny thing is that 2 weeks ago I wouldn't have known what to do with sweet rice flour. Now that I know what to look for, I hope that I can find more bargains like that. Erin

Report On The Weekend W/all Those People

Mosaic asked about how my weekend with 10 guests went. We had a great time and the food issues worked out okay.Picture this scene:I'm unpacking a bag of bagles, peaches, and barbeque sauce one of the guests had brought. I pick up the barbeque sauce and look at the ingredients."Oh good, it's gluten free," I say. (It actually said that on the jar). Suddenly everyone stops what they are doing. "Oh," they say, "you're..." (then a pause and hush like the mention of cancer) . "Yes," I say. "I have Ce

Traveling Around California

I am busy packing to leave town. We are heading south to LA, mainly to see the King Tut exhibit at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. We are all excited about it, but I still get a bit nervous when we travel. You know...the food issue. We try to stick to safe restaurants, and we take snacks with us EVERYWHERE, but what is a supposedly safe restaurant has an uninformed chef, or server. They could always mess up and we'd end up sick on vacation. I try to be very careful, but accidents hap

Blackberry Cobbler

I usually like chocolate desserts...chocolate cake, choc. chip cookies, chocolate cheesecake, brownies, etc. But sometimes a good cobbler is what I crave. And I do love blackberry cobbler. That's something I missed for a while after going gluten-free...not that I had it often, it was just the thought of not being able to have it. Well, I learned how to make it gluten-free and it's excellent. I made it for a church get-together and everyone loved it. One person said she was surprised i

My Continuing Saga With Being Gf And No Sleep

Well I am two weeks completely gluten free, and no signs of improvement in my sleep. Have to give it more time I guess, although I think I have a bit more energy. Haven't found it that hard to stay away from the gluten, just have to more aware of what I am eating, and show more will power. Seems to do the trick. No word from my doctor on my prescription for tryptophan yet. Guess I will give her a call in the morning and see whats up.Started taking 1500 elemental units of Calcium a few days ba

Any Day Now

Our baby can come any day now. I think it will be sometime this week then again I don't think she will ever be born Last week we picked our pediatrictian. My husband is allergic to peanuts and I have celiac so I wanted a dr. that is familar with both. She said peanut allergies are not genetic. That was good to hear. He is very allergic and it is so scary. I know gluten is bad for me but it's not going to kill me if I eat it. I hope our daughter will not develop any of our problems. It is

New To This

I have never done this before so I hope I am doing it right. I have been gluten-free since Janurary of 04 and I am beginning to become tired of this whole thing. I am 8 months pregnant right now I am actually due in 3 weeks so that probably has something to do with being tired of being gluten-free. I became really swollen and my dr. told me to watch my salt and sugar intake. I just wanted to cry because I feel like I can't eat anything some days. I usually don't have a problem eating gluten

Cheating: On Purpose Or Not

This blog is inspired by Mosiac's tea cakes. I didn't used to get sick when I ate gluten before I was diagnosed (at least I didn't know I was getting sick, but I had thyroid, early menapause, osteopenia, etc). After a year gluten-free I find that my body does react when inadvertedly contaminated. Basically, I don't cheat. I thought I would (like when I visit my husband's family in Louisanna and his mama sets biscuits out on the table every morning) but I have found it easier than I thought it

Freezer Woes

Going through our huge freezer this weekend...cleaning out all the stuff that I can't eat...We donated 6 Sara Lee pies and 7 frozen pizzas, bags of rolls and biscuits, 2 loafs of bannana bread to our starving college student friends. The corned beefs that I bought at Safeway are gluten free! So tomorrow night is corned beef night. Stick it in the crock pot in the morning, get back from work and it's done!Bar-s products are almost all gluten-free, just not some of the Deli meats....those cheap h

Can't Sleep

I seem to be unable to get to sleep tonight. My husband is coming home tomorrow and I am so excited to see him after his being gone 6 weeks. He is in New Mexico tonight and will be here sometime early afternoon. Today is his 65th birthday and he was going to ride through Durango, Colorado to celebrate but he hit rain on his way up the mountains. So, he turned around and took to the highway and just headed the fastest way into New Mexico. I am sorry that his birthday was not what he hoped.

My First Post--last July.

Hello everyone!I'm a 21- year-old female who has exhibited many of the symptoms of celiac disease for the past five months. I have had an upper GI, countless blood tests (one of which caused me to pass out), a gallbladder untrasound, an X-Ray, and a stool card test (I never got the results on that one!). All of those tests were normal except for the final bloodwork I had done in June showing gluten antibodies. I have an EGD on Aug. 4th, and I'm not looking forward to being sedated while I swallo

The College Story.

After taking the tour in the spring of '02, I headed to Thiel to begin my freshman year that August (the 18th, to be precise). Cross Country camp starts early--I'll be there on the 21st this year (if I don't have to go to the country fair with the radio station for my internship). I was terrified, even though the campus is small, about numerous college awareness factors for young, single, vulnerable females. I remember waiting for my physical and literally gripping the wall. Initially (in high

Takes about about a week to heal up. Surprisingly painless.

Another concern I had with my cockup with the bandage was with the larvae sitting in the gauze potentially drying out and dying while I futzed around. Seems things are ok. I've been having tingles under the stretch bandage I used to secure placement. I'll know for sure in a couple of days when I see the entry wounds.
