Hi everyone,
I’m Mike, one of the co-founders of Academy Camps, a sleepaway sports camp for kids ages 10 to 16. I’m posting here because one of our camp families whose daughter has Celiac encouraged me to share our experience with this community.
Over the past few summers, we’ve learned that what we’re able to offer kids with Celiac at a sleepaway camp is still surprisingly rare. We take gluten-free needs very seriously and have built systems that truly work.
At Academy Camps, we offer gluten-free menu options at every meal. All gluten-free food is prepared and cooked in a dedicated gluten-free area of our kitchen, with clear procedures to avoid cross-contamination. Each summer we typically have 6 to 8 campers with Celiac, and their feedback has been incredibly meaningful to us.
We are hosting 3 Virtual Open Houses for families interested in attending our camp this summer. We will cover many topics about experience, including our ability to serve campers with strict dietary restrictions. If you'd like to learn more, click on a date below to RSVP!
What our Celiac campers tell us most often is how much it matters to be able to experience sleepaway camp alongside all of their friends, not just campers who share the same condition. They eat the same meals together, follow the same daily schedule, and fully participate in everything camp has to offer without feeling singled out or limited.
As a camp director and a parent myself, I know how stressful it can be to trust a sleepaway camp with your child’s health. I wanted families here to know that there is an option out there that truly understands and supports kids with Celiac in a camp setting.
