ARCHIVED So Frustrated - gluten-free-living In Europe
Lisa B replied to Yoekie's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Isn't it funny how the grass is always greener on the other side! I am in Canada and often look at Europe as a kind of gluten-free utopia. Although we have some great products here, the level of awareness and accomodation that seem to be in place in many European countries makes me envious. My son is Celiac and I am originally from the UK so often... -
ARCHIVED Glutened - Symptom Relief - Any Suggestions?

That makes sense as it coats the stomach. Will give it a try, although not sure he'll take to the taste! Thanks -
ARCHIVED Glutened - Symptom Relief - Any Suggestions?
Lisa B posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My 13 yr olf son rarely gets glutened as he is very diligent about what he eats but occasionally he is subject to accidental gluten probably by cross contamination. As a result he has stomach pain and headache for 2-4 days. I was wondering if anyone has suggestions about what may 'flush' out the effects of this quicker or do you just have to ride it... -
I posted on this a few weeks ago. The pizza crust is pre-formed which they keep in cold storage and the time that it is exposed to 'floury air' is minimal. I watch every step of my order - something I can't do in a regular restaurant so have more control over identifying cross contamination than anywhere else. I observed lots of handwashing, there...

As far as I understand it, Ashkanazim do not eat rice (or corn or legumes) but Sefardim do. We're a schizophrenic lot! See this link: Open Original Shared Link Lisa

ARCHIVED Canada: Pizza Pizza Has gluten-free Crust!
Lisa B posted a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Amazlingly some Pizza Pizza locations are now carrying gluten-free crust - we tried it out yesterday and had to go back today! Only certain stores have it (check their website). We talked to the franchise owners about food handling before ordering and we were comfortable that they knew what to do. We observed lots of hand washing, cleaing of utensils... -
I am looking for a recipe that comes as close as possible to an authentic English scone taste and texture - does anyone have a tried and true recipe that they are willing to share? Thanks to everyone that takes the time to read this post and reply. LisaB

ARCHIVED Yoplait New Labeling
Lisa B replied to Charlotte K's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
The following Q&A is on the Canadian Yoplait web site - may not be applicable in US although I can't imagine that the process would be different. Obvious exceptions would be the granola based and cookies items. Do Yoplait products contain gluten? We carefully analyze all of our ingredients (presence of wheat, rye, barley, triticale, spelt, oats... -
Thanks for the response - we are just visiting the area for a hockey game so it's a four hour drive each way. I haven't heard of Good Food Company so will look them up. I am not familiar with the Detroit area at all. Lisa

I'm not sure that this counts as travelling but will be visiting the Detroit area soon for one day only and would like to know what is the leading supermarket as far as carrying gluten-free products and/or gluten-free labelled house brands. Also, does anyone know if Joe Louis Arena carries any gluten-free items on their concession stands? Many thanks...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Cheesecake In Yorkville
Lisa B replied to Annaem's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
They are available at other locations - I bought one about 8"s across from a Low-Carb store at Yonge & Lawrence. Not cheap but quite tasty. I guess it's just the cheese part without any base. My son ate it and had no reaction. It's a buy to satisfy a craving. Lisa Thornhill/Toronto -
I'm not sure that $600 is an 'absolute' limit; as a medical expense I think that the total allowable would be based on your income possible up to a maximum for the year per person. Your husband can claim for himself and either one of you can claim for your child depending upon which would give you the most beneficial result which your tax preparer can work...

Does anyone have a recipe for Honey Cake that they could share with me. It is close to Rosh Hashanah and I have alwyas made one in the past - it wouldn't be the same for us without! It's the first year of diagnosis for my son. Many thanks, Lisa

Thanks everybody - time to go shopping! Lisa

I am considering buying a deep fryer to give my son some of the foods he is craving - can anyone recommend a make that is easy to use, turns out consistent results and doesn't stink the house out! Many thanks, Lisa

I am a CA with a Celiac diagnosed child (recently diagnosed) and it seems to me that you don't need to complete the Disability Tax Credit form unless you are claiming for the 2001 and/or 2002 tax years; it is not available for other tax years. The CRA does not specify that the letter from the medical practitioner indicates how diagnosis was reached. You...

ARCHIVED Canadians - Watch Out For Kelsys
Lisa B replied to Lisa B's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
There is not a gluten-free menu for The Keg although there is supposed to be an allergy guide in store. The cesar salad is a 'no' because of the dressing - next time we will try to take our own. My son has a steak and baked or mashed potato (no gravy). He tried the creme brulee for dessert. Today we stopped at a St Louis for lunch (in Woodbridge... -
ARCHIVED Canadians - Watch Out For Kelsys
Lisa B replied to Lisa B's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I think that's the most responsible response and now we know! Kelsey's will be off my list. I have to add that The Keg is a pretty good choice - the fries are no good there either but when we go they make every attempt to accomodate. It's a pricey choice but great steak! Lisa -

ARCHIVED Canadians - Watch Out For Kelsys
Lisa B replied to Lisa B's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Here is the text of the email that I sent to Kelseys about the discrepancy between their corporate menu and my in store experience and their initial reply the gist of which is "You're on your own": Hello Denise, On May 18th you very kindly sent me a list of apparently gluten free dining options at Kelseys; this past weekend was the first time we... -
ARCHIVED Canadians - Watch Out For Kelsys
Lisa B replied to Lisa B's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
The restaurant did not have a gluten-free menu on site; I got it as a response to my enquiry through the Kelsey's corporate website. The restuarant I visited was in Thornhill, Ontario (just nort of TO). I haven't emailed back to the person who provided me the menu yet but I will over the weekend and post the response I get. Aside from the incorrect... -
ARCHIVED Canadians - Watch Out For Kelsys
Lisa B replied to Lisa B's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
The gluten-free menu was issued by the corporate office which should represent every location - for a franchise or corporately owned store they should be run in an identical way so that you know what to expect every time. We didn't have a problem with what we ordered but I am glad I was careful. We still have miles to go for even large organizations that... -
Having a son recently diagnosed I polled some of our favourite eating places for their gluten-free menus/options. Kelseys provided me with a list of items which included their fries. I went last night to order take out and being a suspicious type wanted to make sure that all of the things that I was ordering for my son were safe. The manager was...
