  1. So, I realize that starting an elimination diet would probably be TORTURE before the holidays...and i'm all about eating! But I was wondering how you start one. Do you need a few weeks of eating very bland, simple, non processed foods, etc before you can start? Or can I jump right in when I'm ready? There are a few things in my diet that seem like suspicious...
  2. Thank you to everyone who posted re; the original post I think what I'm experiencing is like one of the other posters said...if I skip a meal, or delay a meal...i'm off the rest of the day. (Sometimes even the next day...grrr) I have been gluten free for 21/2 - 3 months...should i be healed by now do you think? I sometimes wonder if I just haven't had enough...
  3. Just wondering, has anyone noticed if exercising has helped the belly? (God, I HATE this thing that's happening to mine! Haha) I've been gluten free for about 2 1/2 months and cant' seem to get rid of the belly either. It's starting to look better, but I still feel like I look pregnant. When I get hungry it swells up..when I'm full, it swells up. The only...
  4. Thank you mushroom for your reply. It's good to know (although I'm sorry!) that someone else experiences this strange sensation. It stinks for your stomach to hurt even when you haven't put anything in it! Haha...Hopefully my next traveling experience goes well..I'm going to have to make sure and stock up on snacks and just keep them handy.
  5. Not to stir up any trouble here...My situation centers around feeling extremely bloated when hungry...I am not hungry all the time. I eat a very healthy diet, and the grains that I think we (at least I) was referring to meant quinoa (which is extremely rich in nutrients and protein), rice..more starchy foods perhaps. I'm not consuming these foods as it is...
  6. Thank you for all of your tips! They are very helpful I think for so long I ate whatever the heck I wanted to, b/c it seemed as If EVERYTHING upset my stomach, and I was too frustrated to try and determine what exactly was causing the problem. Now I've narrowed done my diet something fierce, and yet I think I'm still a little lazy about trying to find the...
  7. In my case, my insurance DOES cover the cost of seeing a registered dietician/nutritionist, however the Columbia Celiac center's nutritionist does not accept ANY insurance. The nutritionist that I saw most recently did accept my insurance, and I only had to pay a copay. So it's frustrating to think that I could see someone where my cost is covered or shell...
  8. I eat about 5 times a day - breakfast, snack, lunch, snack, dinner - all pretty healthy meals and don't usually overeat. I eat out rarely, and make most meals at home (gluten free of course). My problem is, that for the past several years at LEAST (even before going gluten free), when I'm hungry...really hungry...my stomach starts to bloat up and I'm a mess...

    ARCHIVED Dietician In Nyc?

Can anyone recommend a great dietician in the nyc area? I see Dr. Green at the Columbian Celiac Center, however Anne Lee has left, and the nutritionist currently on board does not accept insurance. I would really prefer seeing someone who does accept insurance, seeing as times are tight! I had seen another dietician who was great, but probably isn't quite...
  10. Wow, great advice from everyone! Thank you so much... I have started to eat more corn (in the form of tortillas and chips) since going gluten free. I'm a vegetarian, basically vegan, so I eat very little cheese/dairy and no meat products. However, I do drink soy milk once in awhile. I try to eat very little processed food and avoid 'fake meats' like the...
  11. I must have had something to eat on Friday that threw my stomach off..although I'm not sure what it was. Anyway, i'm pretty darn careful when it comes to eating gluten free and rarely eat things that I don't cook myself (out of convenience more than anything else.) However, I do get bloated alot still...and most of the times it goes away eventually. However...
  12. Hi all...I have an icky question for ya.. I have been on the gluten free diet since late June...so for about 3 months or so. The past week/week and a half, I've been noticing that at least once a day when i go to the restroom for #2...it floats. I thought I'd heard that this was a sign of celiac and the malabsorbtion of fat. I have been careful about not...
  13. Great tip - thank you!!
  14. Thank you everyone for your responses...I just feel so abnormal when these incidences occur. Luckily I have a VERY supportive family - Unluckily..they all live over a 1000 miles away, so I'm traveling during holidays and other times a yr. ..there's just no getting around it. I had such an unpleasant time this last trip I am considering telling my family I...
  15. I have had anxiety and bowel related issues for years. In the past (before going gluten free) this has been the scenario: my stomach hurts, which triggers anxiety re; needing to find a restroom QUICK OR, I have anxiety which triggers my stomach to hurt, and then I panic more, b/c I need to find a restroom quick. It's a vicious cycle which was what invevitably...
  16. I believe you are able to order any test from their website (Kimball Genetics, Prometheus, and Enterolab), however I have heard that insurance is less likely to cover it if YOU order it yourself. My experience has been such, that my gastroenterologist ordered the test, I called my insurance to find out if they covered it (using the test codes, you can obtain...
  17. Can anyone help - I'm visiting my dad in Arlington this weekend, and I need some ideas! He's fairly clueless about where/what I can eat, and I've looked online, but haven't found much in that area. Any ideas on good restaurants that have gluten-free fare, but that non gluten-free-ers can enjoy as well in the Dallas area?
  18. Thank you SO much for being so thorough..as I really know nothing about this aspect of the disease. I know that not everyone has this reaction, and it's probably just a coincidence that this is happening to me now. But I wanted to understand it better. Whatever is happening on my legs looks pretty awful. Is it possible to have the terribly itchy skin, but...
  19. What does it look like exactly? When i saw my gastro dr. just recently he was asking if I ever broke out in 'rashes' or had itchy spells before going gluten free. I said no, not really giving it too much thought. My mother has celiac and she has never had any skin problems at all either, so I really never associated the two. I pretty much assumed I didnt...
  20. I found it on Amazon and it looks like it has potential to be a great source for us gluten free-ers! The woman who wrote it has celiac disease and a number of other allergies. She researched restaurants all around the world and gives the low down on what to order, what to ask and where to eat. Anyone read it? I'm curious if it's really good.
  21. I think my dr. wishes I had not gone gluten free before I met with him, so I could have the biopsy done BUT he realizes and respects my decision not to go back to eating gluten for 3 mo. just to have a test run. He told me adhere strictly to the diet if I'm not going to have to test done to find out for sure. I think I would perhaps be more confident if I...
  22. Thank you both! I appreciate your responses. From this point forward, I think I will simplify it by saying "i have celiac." It seems like the most direct response rather than me going into detail over the nitty gritty details of it all. Why make things harder on myself right? Haha I dont have children right now, but that was one of the first questions...
  23. Thanks to everyone for responding..I appreciate all the input. I was actually able to get in touch with my dr. yesterday, and he brought it up. He stated that I was allergic to peanuts, and that I should definitely cut it out of my diet. He felt like cutting them out could be the tipping point - the difference in feeling good about 70% of the time on a gluten...
  24. To make a long story short..I have had stomach issues all of my life, in one form or another. I was diagnosed as having IBS about 10 years ago, with no tests done. My mother has celiac and was diagnosed at age 23...my syptoms mirrored hers completely. I had the celiac blood panel tests done in the beginning of the year (while eating gluten) and tested negative...
  25. Anyone have any ideas for a great nutritionist in the NYC area? Thanks in advance!
