  1. What wonderful posts about the experiences of a Section 504 for a child with celiac disease. Thank-you for posting. I have a question - What is the timeline for a Section 504? After a meeting to obtain parental consent for an evaluation, how much time (number of days) does the school have to do the evaluation before a meeting is held to determine eligibility...
  2. I work as a school psychologist in a middle school/junior high and have worked in preschool, elementary, and high school settings in the past. Food is pervasive in the school setting including middle school/junior high. It is used for incentives/rewards/prizes, instructional activities, and before high stakes testing. Although children and adolescents may...
  3. Hello, everyone! I'm interested in hearing what others have done to educate and prepare the daycare for a 2 year old child with celiac disease. My husband and I are in the process of finalizing our adoption of our daughter. Finalization will be November 15th. Gotcha day was June 6th evening at the orphanage in India. I'm on FMLA and will be returning...

  7. My husband is from Sri Lanka and our daughter is adopted from India. Gluten, especially wheat, is also part of the diet even in South India and especially in Sri Lanka (e.g., roti, savory snacks, and cakes/pastries). Our daughter, age 2, was diagnosed with celiac disease one month ago. If you do a search on the Journal of Indian Gastroenterology, you'll find...

    ARCHIVED India?

Need to ask about their use of asofoetida in their cooking as this can be wheat based. I understand that the Hing brand is not wheat based.

    ARCHIVED India?

Just be careful about the Indian restaurants in the states. It depends which ones you go to because there can be cross contamination in the tandoori oven with bread being baked there, too, and in the oil that things are fried in could also have fried gluten based items. Do your research before hand to prevent disappointment. There is an Indian celiac...
  10. After doing the research on Sri Lankan and Indian products, we wanted to let you know that it is not advisable to consume any commercially prepared food items that were prepared and processed in India and Sri Lanka. At least in Sri Lanka, gluten is often added and is not always reported on the label and when it is reported, it is not often labeled as gluten...

  12. The decision to hire a one-on-one nanny or to provide group oriented daycare whether this is home-based or in a center is a personal one and not a right or wrong answer type of question. The longitudinal research does not show that either is better, just that the quality is what counts. As for one of the parents staying home, it does not matter whether it...
  13. My husband and I adopted a 2 year old this summer from India who was recently diagnosed wtih celiac disease. My husband is from Sri Lanka. We enjoy many Sri Lankan and Indian foods. While Sri Lanka has had wheat based foods for many years at least since the Portuguese's arrival in the 1500s, there are many non-gluten items and recipes/dishes that are fantastic...
  14. What a wonderful post! I wish that my daughter was old enough to be your student. You come across as a very caring individual. What a treat it would be for a student to have a teacher with such insight and understanding about gluten free diets and celiac disease.
  15. I didn't think about the Section 504 plan until I saw another parent on another celiac disease forum mentioned that he was an expert at working with the school and that his child had a Section 504 plan. The Section 504 is a part of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It is a civil rights federal law that requires schools to provide accommodations to...
