About Me

I'm a software developer, working on my masters in computer science on the side. I have more hobbies than I know what to do with.

  1. I want to do cherry pie filling. The recipe I want to make uses puff pastry, that's the only reason I was going to use that... The recipe uses frozen puff pastry sheets, cut into strips which are then laid out in a long line, pressed together at the seams so it's one long piece, then the filling is put onto it and the dough is pinched shut around it. Looking...
  2. Is the main thing about the looks that it's not as puffy as puff pastry should be? I don't really know what puff pastry is vs. regular pastry or anything... Ordinarily I'm really not much into baking or baked goods, but for this potluck I go the extra mile. Do you think this would at least stretch and seal around a filling? I think that would really be the...
  3. I was hoping to get opinions on this Open Original Shared Link. Specifically I want to know if it'll work for the recipe I have in mind, which is (warning, images are kinda icky as it's a Halloween scary food recipe) Open Original Shared Link. I've never worked with even regular store-bought puff pastry, so making it from scratch will be rather interesting...
  4. Thanks everyone for the advice. You've all given me a lot to think about. Hopefully with all these great ideas I can figure out something. domesticactivist, your story was really inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing. And your process sounds like it might actually work with my in-laws, if I can get them to talk and listen. Thanks again everyone. I really...
  5. Hmm. On the fun question, yes and no. There are times that I enjoy it, but the family dynamics are really weird. For one thing, despite all the gatherings, they aren't really all that close. My husband is always saying he wishes his relationship with his brothers was as close as mine is with my sister. We see my family much less often since they're much...
  6. But will this be safe during the holidays? During the rest of the year this might work, but I'm worried that when the place essentially turns into a bakery, it wouldn't be good. I'm unclear on how much flour in the air is too much... I keep reading about how flour dust stays around for days after baking... Thanks very much for the advice so far though...
  7. Sorry, but this is going to be kind of long. My husband's family makes every meal during family gatherings into a huge deal. Every meal will take something like 3 hours between food prep, cooking time, eating, and clean up. His mother is at the root of it; she seems to purposely take forever cooking even very simple meals, so that she can force everyone...
  8. Maybe a month ago I had a gluten free pizza at Uno's. While I was there, I asked about customizing the pizzas (like adding toppings) and was told that they make the gluten-free pizzas the night before to avoid cross contamination, so if I wanted to have different toppings I'd have to call a day ahead and they'd make my custom pizza that night so I could...
  9. Thanks so much for the info and reply. I'll talk to my doctor about getting some more tests, then. She already does standard blood tests at my yearly check-up so hopefully adding a few more to make sure everything's ok won't be a problem.
  10. I was diagnosed with celiac disease in early February and I've been gluten free since then. In late July I had a blood test which included a celiac panel, and the results came back very good. My levels were VERY high in the February tests, and they've dropped down very low; my doctor says she's satisfied with how low they are, so I should keep on doing what...
