  1. I am having trouble understanding if oats are safe for me to consume. I know that it varies from person to person, so how might the doctors test for it? Do I simply try eliminating it if my symptoms persist after a few months of a gluten-free diet? Also, I haven't been strict about eliminating foods containing "artificial flavors" especially ice cream...
  2. Ugh, as if finding an apartment in The City isn't difficult enough, I am trying to find a gluten-free environment as well! Is there any chance that anyone in the East Village or Greenpoint needs an awesome student roommate??
  3. I agree with you about the coffee/caffeine. I'm from Portland, OR where coffee is KING. I've removed it from my diet many times and it never makes a difference, though reducing from my once normal daily amount of 32oz down to 12-16oz definitely did help my stomach pains. I am thinking this is a blood sugar issue. My boyfriend suggests that as the culprit...
  4. My boyfriend is very careful, but I did sit down with him last night before posting this and asked his thoughts on how strict we were being. I've been eating a few things without extensively checking the label for hidden gluten (like Haagen Daz mint chocolate chip ice cream) so there is a good chance I am glutening myself. My step brother is a bartender and...
  5. Thank you, I will pay close attention to this! And thanks for the other information as well. I will get myself check out soon
  6. Today is my 41st day being gluten free. My symptoms had been up and down, but I'm now officially in a rut and feeling frustrated. I was one of the Celiacs who "didn't have symptoms" before getting diagnosed, but I think I just didn't know what was abnormal. Anyway, now that I know the root cause of my morning bathroom issues (I get D not C) but I am curious...
  7. WONDERFUL! Thank you!
  8. Thanks fellow night owl! I just finished some gluten-free Mac N' Cheese from "Brooklyn Mac." Again, not healthy but it is sooooo hard to watch my roommates order pizza here. What other restaurants do you recommend? I had talked to a nutritionist about taking some B12 for my fatigue even though I hadn't tested low. She seemed skeptical but I think I'm gonna...
  9. I am in the same boat! No one responded to you though Have you seen anyone you like since posting this? I'm looking for someone in either the village or brooklyn.
  10. I have been on my gluten-free diet for one month, and relocated from Oregon to New York one week ago. I was very vigilant about creating healthy meals after I was diagnosed, but as time has passed I've gotten more and more lazy. I've been skipping meals to avoid figuring out what to eat and munching on Kettle potato chips for snacks rather than body-healing...
  11. As I am learning to accept my diagnosis and trying to figure exactly how it came about for me (I didn't have sever physical symptoms) I am starting to see the potential for nearly everyone I meet to have an allergy to gluten! Maybe it is just because I have been reading this forum so much, but I'm feeling like gluten is evil at the moment. And I can link...
  12. Same here! I am on day 5 of being gluten-free and getting a little nervous that I'm not having any withdrawals at all. I should probably note that I was diagnosed on accident after suffering from stress induced ulcer-like indigestion. The testing came back negative for an ulcer, but my doctor tested me for celiac just in case... and I had it! I took Prilosec...
  13. I am in the same boat as you! I just had my diagnosis confirmed by endoscopy and biopsy on May 11th. I am on my 4th day of gluten free eating. Since I wasn't having many physical symptoms I wont know exactly what "getting glutened" feels like until I've been doing this for a while. Remember, you can read the ingredients on anything you cook yourself,...
  14. I am trying to make a list for my first gluten-free grocery shopping experience and all I can think of is, "Dang, I have to cook in this heat?" I want to eat as much naturally gluten-free food as possible, and things that will help me begin to heal my body. What do you like to eat when the weather heats up??
  15. That is great information, thank you!! I was particularly intrigued by your note about raw vs. cooked foods. I noticed that I had some trouble with raw bell peppers in recent weeks. I was planning on eating as much "naturally guten free foods" as possible, as we are all instructed to do, but was fearing the bloating that I had with some raw veggies. I read...
  16. This is what I think I am struggling with the most. I am aware of how the service industry treats people with allergies because my boyfriend of 4 years has a severe allergy to sunflower seeds (much more difficult to deal with than gluten because it is not known in pop culture). I know that waiters are pained to have to read a label on a bag, I know they will...
  17. It was definitely a shock for me, as I have been physically active and maintained a healthy diet my whole life. I had almost no symptoms, so luckily I did not have to undergo a drawn-out journey to come to this diagnosis. At the same time, it feels like that much more of an abrupt and unreal change. I think I'll poke around the forums and try to seek out...
  18. I am a writer and I find that I hardly have words to describe how this moment in time feels. I had my endoscopy and biopsy today. It was my first time ever being put under. I've never had any major health issues, nor have any of my close family members, so any experience with illness feels dramatic and strange to me. I know I don't have cancer or anything...
  19. My blood recently tested positive for celiac and I am pending biopsy confirmation on Friday. I met with my naturopath to discuss diet options, and I mentioned that I was concerned about working at a bakery where I'd just been hired. She said that there is a reaction spectrum that ranges from No Gluten Problems - Sensitivity Eating Gluten - Gluten Allergy...
