About Me

My journey

I was never one who was overweight. Heck, I never tipped the scale at 100 or above till I graduated from college. I never worried about my weight. Ever.

My first idea that my weight somehow wasn’t “ideal” was at my first job and they brought someone in to give us health assessments. I was 22, 5-foot 4 and weighed 117 pounds. I was told that I needed to lose 7 pounds to get down to 110, and maintain there. I was devastated. I ignored it.

My weight hovered between 115-125 from the ages of 21 to 26. It survived at a low level in spite of my being in NYC on 9/11, and dealing with a very stressful (understatement) situation. In 2004, I lost my cousin who was a year older than me, to doctor negligence (my words) after she gave birth. I believe this was the first stressor that hit me hard.

Also, I fell on ice in 2000. Initially I was okay, however started feeling very sick later on. I went to the ER 3 times over the pain – no kidney stones, no appendicitis – and they finally said “we don’t know what it is, but it could be an ovarian cyst.” Since then, I had severe stomach problems over in in 2001, had a colonoscopy for it in 2002, bad pain periodically until 2007 when it hit full force in July/August, and then again slight twinges since.

My weight began going up until I was at 156 when I joined WW in 2007. I successfully lost 30+ pounds on their turnaround plan, and kept it off for more than a year.

Then, in December 2008, I moved to Illinois. I knew no one, had no job and was alone except for family. My weight went from roughly 130-140, not huge. I kept it there until I was “fired/mutually quit” my job in February 2011. Then I gained. And had sinus surgery, and then an appendectomy in November 2011 and finally didn’t get a job I really wanted. My weight ballooned from 140-166. And, I was (still am) in a healthy relationship with a great job.

Since high school, I’ve dealt with some skin issues that would flare up occasionally. I would get these intensely itchy spots that would almost blister, I’d scratch them and then the spots would looks like burns as they healed.

I’ve also dealt with severe sinus issues from age 12-13 to present. Sinus issues so bad that prednisone did not help. Flonase did not help. Sinus surgery helped a bit, but has not eradicated the pesky issue.

Want more? Okay. Add in calf cramps (not a potassium issue, I got my blood work and my potassium is great), legs issues I would call restless leg syndrome, hands/feet that occasionally go numb, arms that get heavy for no reason, fatigue, random bouts of coughing, diagnosed with hypoglycemia in 1996, itchy scalp that when I scratch it it looks like I’m bleeding from the follicles.

In 2010, I learned that I have a Chiari Malformation Type 1 that’s 7mm long, and that when I eat salty foods I retain fluid in my ears that gives me vertigo (the room goes wobbly).

Since 2010, I have given up soda, potato chips, salty foods in general, lots of candy and sweets. I give in to the soda temptation when I have a really, really, really bad headache (or I need a quick sugar fix).

Yes, I eat out a lot with my boyfriend. But I do not overeat, even if we eat “bad for you” foods.

I eat lots of fruits and veggies, drink tons of water and tea, don’t snack a great deal and get between 6000-11000 steps a day. I take a hula-hooping dance class. I sleep well.

I did lose about 12 pounds in a year+ on WW 360-program, however my weight loss has stalled. I think it’s because I don’t eat poorly.

I’ve been skin tested for the basic allergies (pollen, dust, pet dander) and was told by the allergist that I have no allergies. I have no allergies to medication.

My only answer is that I must have a food allergy. It’s not nuts, because I can eat those w/o problem. I’m guessing it’s gluten, because sugar and milk products don’t give me a problem.

That’s where I’m at.
  1. I know this is an old thread, and I've voluntarily gone gluten-free, but this describes the ache in my legs perfectly. It's gone down quite a bit since I've been gluten-free, but a super bad day on Friday (work stress, being told I needed to do $2300 car repairs on a car not worth it, etc.) I must have has something w/ Gluten in it (or cross contamination...
  2. Awesome - thanks to you both! I have done a lot of reading about all this, and your answers really helped. Blood test for me was negative, though prior to taking it I had been limiting my gluten intake. I have gone gluten-free in the last week, and am feeling better, so if I'm not gluten intolerant I believe I am gluten sensitive. My Vitamin D numbers...
  3. I've read about the specific blood tests that indicate ones issues with gluten. However, I was wondering whether anyone knows whether there are blood tests that might show results that are pre-cursors for gluten issues. For instance, if ones tests come back as low calcium then the doctor might prescribe calcium supplement to help build bone strength. Is anyone...
  4. I'm overly cautious is all, especially as I'm extremely fair.
  5. Yeah, I try to avoid the sun at all costs. The pain, the time and the consequences are too much in my case.
  6. Yep, got them OTC but they weren't green - they were liquicaps. My dr said nothing about dosage except to either drink 2 glasses of milk, 3-4 glasses of Sunny Delite or spend 40 minutes in the sun - which after having a 3rd degree sunburn + chicken pox when I was 8 and the fact that my dad's fighting skin cancer I said the sun and I aren't besties. My...
  7. I was taking a D3 capsule supplement, and have switched to a liquid version. I know that my blood work came back negative, but I still think with my symptoms, low Vitamin D, thyroid on the lower side that I'm going to see how I feel on a gluten free plan. I have had protein laden salads the past week for lunch, no sandwiches, and my hypoglycemia has been...
  8. Additional spots on my left inside wrist and left index . . . so frustrating
  9. I got a result today .... Tissue Transglutaminase AB, IGA of <1.2, standard range of <4.0 is negative I'm not sure I totally understand what the result means. Still researching and keeping my symptom journal.
  10. I got my Vitamin D test results back today (online) 2013: 13, range 30-100 2012: 15, range 30-100 So, continuing my Vitamin D supplements . . . still no word on my other testing
  11. Before I scratch, they get really red and inflamed. As I scratch the skin acts like it's blistering - it seems to get "loose" and I can pull the top layer away. Once the "blister pop" there is clear fluid, the skin turn whitish and red around it. I also have 2 little spots on my left palm, here's a small example of what they look like before it get scratched...
  12. I know that others have posted pictures in here, and I'm just looking for some help. I've had these intensely itchy spots on my hands for about 18 years (I'm 36 now). Whenever I get them, I can wash my hands, use hand cream, cortisone ointment, hand sanitizer - nothing will stop the itch. The itch is stopped only by scratching, and it's a conscious thing...
  13. Well, I think I may have the worst doctor ever. Without going into it, I had to remind him that I needed blood work done today. I asked 3 times about the full celiac panel, and I still don't think they did it. So, looking for a new doctor . . . (one that listens to me about my hands, abdominal pain, sinuses, etc.) However, I did get the thyroid panel...
  14. Okay, so I have not had any type of testing, but I am looking for wisdom of those who have come before me and know a bit more than do I. So, here's the nitty gritty "boring" details - 36 yr old female, was born 2.5 months early but no health issues from birth. I was diagnosed with a 7mm Chiari Malformation Type 1 in 2010 (my boss called me a freak), had...
