I'm a singer -songwriter producer from Manhattan,
New York City who also lived in Europe as a child and California as a teenager.
I was diagnosed as a celiac at around the age of 2, I had alternating diarrhea and constipation, big black circles under my eyes, a large swollen belly and I was underweight.
Luckily I was treated by a Europen trained osteopathic doctor who put me on a diet of bannanas and rice. I'm not sure whaht else I ate but I remember endless kannana flakes! My fondest memories, were of eating at a Chinese Restaurant every Sunday! At some point I was put on a regular diet maybe around the age of 6? I think this might have been a mistake! I suppose it had to do with school and also then they thought you out-grew celiac?? I began contolling my diet again in my early 20's after many years of irregular bowel problems, bloating, unconrolled emotions and skin sensitivity.
This wasn't easy but I was lucky in that my "old man" didn't really care about bread products though he did like pasta, (there wasn't gluten free pasta available then) which he ate when we went out. He didn't eat eggs so I used to make gluten and egg free pancakes and baked my own cakes and muffins.... We parted a few years ago and I started seeing an italian american man..now this became a problem because he really didn't get it! The first time we split up was because we were in a diner having breakfast and I wanted to eat some gluten -free muffins, I had made, with my eggs!
We are still together and it's still a problem, he likes bagels, bread, regular pasta, shreeded wheat, cookies etc. and he wants to eat them in front of me....it's very hard to resist when they are in front of you! He doesn't mind the rice pasta but for instance I just mentioned the gluten -free vacation and he was like ugg!that's not good for me.....

  1. It's amazing how many shampoos have wheat protein as an ingredient! Yellow Number 5 is common too. (Can cause asthma) I have a sensitivity to many frangrances as well as gluten and yellow #5...try finding unscented shampoo!!! As someone mentioned there is a unscented neutrogena if you can find it but it doesn't agree with my hair. My longtime favorite shampoo...
  2. Hi! I'm new to this forum but longtime celiac (see my profile) All I have to say to people with kids with celiac is to try to explain to them that tooth care is especially important because of the celiac disease!! I remember feeling as if I was being tortured for some reason (I thought cosmetic and greedy dentists ) which I didn't care about, especially...
  3. Just saw the long lashes "symptom" at medline (I think). I had some blood tests at a gastroenterologist (not a celiac specialist as far as I know) because I was diagnosed as a child but never tested since (but have tried to avoid gluten the last 20 years) and was wondering what the tests will show...no results yet but the doctor was quite short and had...

  5. We need a good Gluten-Free Singles Board! One of the hardest things I've found about being Gluten-Free is dating/living with people who are not themselves affected. Luckily I've had a couple of boyfriends who by chance (maybe they were intolerant to gluten and weren't diagnosed?) had no interest in bread and the like or if they did, didn't eat it around me...
