About Me

Blood test positive on 4/25/12. Biopsy confirmed on 5/11/12

The only thing I thought I could be diagnosed with was being a Beer Snob, until March when I had sudden onset stomach symptoms. The ZoomCare doctor I initially saw thought it might be an ulcer and referred me to a GI specialist. He doubted there was anything wrong, brushing off my instances of vomiting as food poisoning. He shrugged me off, so I figured everything was fine. The next week he left me a voice mail message, which I listened to while sitting at my desk at work. "Everything looks fine, no ulcer, though I tested you for a wheat allergy and it came back positive for celiac disease. DO NOT begin a gluten free diet, and I'll see you for your endoscopy, plus I'll add a biopsy to confirm." *Click*

I was dumbfounded, literally holding a half-eaten cookie in my hand as I listened to the message. I'd never heard of this before and the only wheat allergy symptoms I was aware of were an "itchy mouth" after drinking Blue Moon beer or other low-grade, poorly processed wheat. This symptom was something that doctors never took seriously. It's good to know that I'm not imagining things, though not being able to drink craft beer and just watching my diet in general will be quite a paradigm shift.

I can't wait to learn more about his community and hope to make some helpful connections! There is power, and knowledge, in numbers.

  1. I met the brew masters wife. She has been drinking the beer since he started making it about 10 years ago. She is a celiac, and she has had multiple biopsies to confirm that her intestines are healthy. I have never had a problem drinking it. Sorry you didn't feel well, I know most celiacs are afraid of the stuff.
