Celiac.com 03/26/2010 - Mass screening studies among the general population for celiac disease show a prevalence of approximately 0.5-1.0% in adults and in children. Yet, despite the growing numbers of newly diagnosed celiac disease patients, most cases still remain undiagnosed and therefore, untreated. In part, the masses of misdiagnosed or undiagnosed  celiac disease  patients are a result of the variety of disguises  celiac disease can have. Celiac disease can manifest into a multitude of symptoms including, but by no means exclusive to, malabsorption syndrome, diarrhea, anemia, infertility and osteoporosis.
It has been demonstrated that there is a clear advantage to early testing for celiac disease. Early testing can aide in  avoiding the irreversible damages that come from diagnosis lat...

Celiac Disease Mass Screening May be Cost Effective
Celiac.com 04/21/2010 - Due to the overwhelming number of ways celiac disease can manifest, it is often misdiagnosed by health care professionals. Celiac disease is also commonly diagnosed later in life, resulting in an  increase in celiac patient's morbidity and mortality. As such, it has been suggested that early screening of celiac disease is an effective way to eliminate misdiagnosis, and  can also minimize symptoms and complications that often manifest as a result of misdiagnosed or undiagnosed celiac disease.
To determine the cost effectiveness of early screening for celiac disease, a group of researchers at the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center, Jerusalem developed a state transition Markov model using information that was collected from previous studies of celiac. T...

The research team included Marisa G Stahl, Cristy Geno Rasmussen, Fran Dong, Kathleen Waugh, Jill M Norris, Judith Baxter, Liping Yu, Andrea K Steck, Brigitte I Frohnert, Edwin Liu, Marian J Rewers, and the ASK Study Group.

Transformative Impact of Mass Screening and Treatment for Celiac Disease in Children
Celiac.com 05/30/2024 - Celiac disease is a chronic autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten ingestion in genetically predisposed individuals. Despite its prevalence, celiac disease often goes undiagnosed or is diagnosed late due to varied symptoms or asymptomatic presentations. Mass screening for celiac disease remains a topic of debate within the medical community due to limited data supporting its benefits. The Autoimmunity Screening for Kids (ASK) study conducted in Colorado aimed to assess the impact of mass screening for pediatric celiac disease and type 1 diabetes.
    Study Overview
The ASK study prospectively followed children aged 1-17 years who tested positive for tissue transglutaminase IgA autoantibodies (tTGA) through mass screening. Those subsequently diagnosed with...
