hi,

 

ive been having a problem with breakfast, mainly because i havent been able to find a suitable milk replacement. ive tried them all almond milk, hazelnut milk, rice milk, chocolate flavour milk and every time my mouth feels odd. cant describe it just feels like im having a reaction in my mouth . i thought today - wonder if it not the milk at all but possibly my toothpaste. im using colgate which i think is ok but wondered if it could be the fluoride or some ingredient in it.

 

anybody else have a problem with toothpaste? looks like im gonna have to try an organic brand to check.

Watch out, not all organic type items are more or less likely to be gluten free or not, it is the ingredients and the labeling that you have to worry about. 

 

Baking soda and water makes a perfectly fine toothpaste substitute, while you are doing the Great Product Search. 

 

(the milk... have you tried coconut milk yet ?)

In my search for a dairy replacement, I noticed that everything I tried just felt different in my mouth than milk felt. I'm not sure if that is maybe what you are experiencing? It didn't feel bad, just different than what I was used to.

 

I use Earthpaste, which is gluten free. It is not corn free, the sweetener in it is sourced from both corn and birch.

Any non-dairy milk will not have the same mouthfeel as dairy milk. All the non-dairy milks I've tried are more watery and definitely have less fat which could be the issue you are experiencing. Typically those "milks" have a lot less fat and are less creamy than dairy milk. It's essentially water extracted from the plants/beans/whatever and sold to the consumer. The only milk I can stand is sweetened low fat soy milk. I've tried coconut milk, almond milk and years ago a non-dairy creamer and they all were so gross to me. The non-dairy creamer had the mouth-feel of milk but its taste was horrible.

 

As a kid I would get moody and irritable and downright mean when I would ingest milk so mom had to take me off of it, substituted the non-dairy creamer. I hated it and eventually quit eating cereal.

 

Now that I'm experiencing atypical and some typical signs of celiac disease I am exploring all my options and have found that IF I do develop an intolerance to milk/dairy I would switch to soy milk products. Dad already buys soy milk because of his lactose intolerance. But I rarely eat cereal, mainly due to my diabetes (spikes in blood sugar) so that limits my milk intake anyway. I don't anymore just go and drink a glass of milk. I used to last year. But last year my hunger hit an alltime high even if I had eaten a large meal, an hour later I'd be starving again. Needless to say I have gained over 100 pounds in just a few short years (poss. sign of celiac disease) and developed neuropathy which we originally thought was from my diabetes. Now I question that association.

 

Sorry for the long post. I guess I didn't really need to mention all that. But yeah any non-dairy milk is not going to feel the same in the mouth as dairy milk.

 

Oh and I know that Crest Pro Health toothpaste causes burning in the gums and cheeks for me, and it makes my gums and cheeks peel, the skin dies and gets replaced fast since the mouth always heals very fast. So I peel off skin from my cheeks because I can feel it and it's gross!! Needless to say I don't ever use Crest Pro Health anymore. I use Colgate Pro Enamel. It doesn't cause that reaction to me. Maybe you are having the same issue?

You could try skipping toothpaste for a couple of days and see if it makes a difference.  I would guess that it is something else.  Another thing, do you get reactions right away?  It takes me until the next day to know so that it could have been anything I ate the day before.

yes i do have a problem with the texture of the milk. i use just enough to wet the cereal now .ive also had the peeling skin on the inside of my mouth - i thought id just chewed it or scratched it.i used to scrape it off with my fingernail !!! maybe it is the type of toothpaste i use, i,ll change it and see if it makes a difference. ta

hi,

im off work tomorrow so i might just skip toothbrushing and have breakfast first for a change. im currently waiting for allergy tests - i get reactions in my mouth about 15-20 mins after eating . not gluten reactions , just more intolerences..fruit and stuff

I have trouble with toothpaste (have for years), but mine is a problem with the preservatives.  Something to look into anyway.  I cannot use any of the major brands but Toms, Trader Joe's, and Jason are all good brands I can use without problems.

In 8 years gluten-free, I have yet to find a toothpaste that does contain gluten.  Colgate and Crest brands are safe.

 

As far the reaction you describe with Colgate Pro-Health with regards to the shedding of tissue on your cheeks, the same thing happened to me.  My dentist said he was noticing this in a  number of his patients and advised me to switch to another brand.  He had no explanation of why it was happening but thought that for some people, it was a mouth irritant.  It had nothing to do with any potential gluten exposure.  I also have Sjogren's Syndrome so the tissue shedding may be because I have dry mouth and the toothpaste may have been too irritating for me, although I noticed no outright irritation or burning.  The tissue was just shedding on the inside of my mouth on the cheeks. It was not "tissue death" as you described but just irritation.

I now use Colgate Sensitive and it works just fine.

I have been having issues with my head. Like really bad dry scalp and sores and I was just recently diagnosed and switched to a shampoo called derm organic and I have seen a huge improvement!!!

I have a problem with toothpaste but it's likely not your problem.  My problem?  Mint!  I thought I needed a paste for sensetive teeth and thankfully someone here located one online that is free of all flavorings.  I have no problems with it except that it is a bit weird with no flavor.  I also can not have clove and that is in a lot of mouth products.  I wound up using Closeup.  It's cinnamon flavored and causes me no problems.  Turns out that I do not have sensitive teeth at all!

 

As for the cereal, I have never liked milk on it so when I eat it, and that's rarely, I eat it dry.  But I also know people who dampen theirs with a little apple juice.  You might try that if you can't stand it dry.

      Sounds like you are in the UK. With blood numbers that high, I thought docs in UK would give an official diagnosis without the biopsy. You should ask about that, so you can get support faster.  I'd try to find and print out anything that supports that in your country, get another appointment and take all of it with you. Even in the US now, some docs are doing this, my 19 year old step granddaughter got an official diagnosis here in US with just blood results a few months ago.

      Is soy sauce in Korea also made from wheat like it usually is in US? I'd be concerned that even if asking about gluten, they would not be aware of or think of some like that.
