  1. thank you HAK1031 for the link! That sounds frikkin awesome! Janessa...we are having Thai tonight actually. Wiill get the books you recommended. Thank you. Alternative mama-thank you for the encouragement Am building a complete BIG gluten-free list for our 1st food buy. It will be an interesting switch for me in doing this. My finace' is disappointed...
  2. Would like to hear from any of you who have had sustained success in going gluten-free. I also am a vegetarian, do not have celiac disease, but am in total support of my fiance' who does have it. She was diagnosed back in 99, went gluten-free for about 16 months. We are looking to make the change together, but do questions and concerns about success. We...
  3. Thank you everyone for all your replies. As a celiac disease friend, I am not in the "decision maker" in my friends journey, yet suffer with her. She (we) attended a support group mtg last night- she stopped in 2001- facilitated by a Dr. and it appeared to begin to push her toward going gluten-free again. One thing we learned is that wheat free does not...
  4. After reading some other posts, I am now wondering if POSSIBLY my friend could have been misdiagnosed back in 99 as having celiac disease and possibly she is only gluten intolerant...she was gluten-free for a year and stopped after that. The year had to help and her symptoms really did drastically drop off after that and were nearly silent for the next 6...
  5. AmnadaD. I ahve heard the same thing about oats as they can be contaminated at the "factory".
  6. Has anyone out there gone gluten-free long enough to be fully recovered from it and then gone back in a limited fashion and been ok? I know this goes against nearly everything- well actually everything I have read, but there is a Dr. here in Seattle who has made the statement that no one actually knows whether you could have gluten in minimal amounts. The...
  7. Learning is always a good thing. Run with that idea about family get togethers being gluten free! Its awesome that she can have have someone around her to validate what she nay have know for a long time. Have fun learning. There is much in that and an even greater need for NCD's who understand and can help and encourage. That is certainly in my friends...
  8. My friend does has some extreme reservations about sharing about celiac disease. First, she is a very private person. She will share with some, and maybe I know more than most. She expresses that she doesnt want people to feel uncomfortable around her, that in the past some people (friends) have made insensitive comments and just dont understand. She is also...
  9. Bottleworks on 45th is scheduled to have gluten-free beer some time in October... I relate to the choices, just wish there were more persuasive ones. She just got the Dummies book from Barnes and Noble. Couldnt get beyond the intro.. Thanks...
  10. Thank you for all of your responses. My growing difficulty now is my friends denial, which has been acknowledged.. The joint pain is now there in the hands, as are some memory and concentration problems. I'm not sure I can particpate in evenings where I know we would be having gluten, etc. even in small amounts. This could be a major turning point...
  11. em2005....This is very good for me to read. My friend is also a very strict vegetarian for ehthical/moral reasons. Soy products are now beginning to cause problems as well. So far she is not gluten-free/wf and soy limited her choices even more. I wish I had some advice to offer. I'm listening at this point. CalrlaB.. I will get some mileage out of your...
  12. My friend has also had a time of remission, so she has been on a "modified" diet since then. Anybody else?
  13. lonewolf.. I'm interested in contacting your Fife naturopath. How long have you been going, what have you learned/benefited, etc. Thanks.
  14. Food can mean a lot of different things to different people, both good and bad. Imbedded in those meanings are values, traditions and generational backgrounds. When someone's diet challenges those values and traditions, the response can be at best unreasonable since the pushback isnt necessarily from the family members, but from the years of tradition behind...
  15. Good response!
  16. I'm interested in your "Celiac Card". Can you elaborate?
  17. CarlaB, Nantzie and NoGluGirl........ Thank you for your encouragements. Especially Nanzie for spelling out all the "fuss" you have to make when it comes to food and the disbelief part. That stuck a deep chord. Her diet is further complicated as she is a pretty strict vegetarian, so this limits her choices even further, though it has opened me up to a...
  18. Thank you for that! She actually had to leave work today. I know it is harder to have celiac disease, but seeing her in pain hurts. Thanks again!
  19. My intro into all this has been over several months. The more I read the more I understand her hesitation to share how bad celiac disease complications can be. I cant totally vouch for her, but know enough that she isnt completely WF/gluten-free, but is making concerted effots.
