We have pizza brought into our company once a month. Last month, we ordered pizza from Uno's so I and a co-worker could get our gluten free pizza. Unfortunately, they delivered the gluten free pizza in the same bag as the regular pizzas. I wrote them an email letting them know that it should be handled separately. The regional manager sent me a very nice...

ARCHIVED Feeling Even Worse On A gluten-free Diet
PattiD2 replied to bianca's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I'm not on this board very often, any more but I happened to see this thread so I thought I would add my input. My 15 year old DD has been diagnosed with celiac disease and eosinophilic esophagitus (EE). Eosinophils are white blood cells that are normally used to fight parasites. In this case, the body mistakenly reacts this way to certain foods causing... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Oatmeal - Taste
PattiD2 replied to jenkay's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I felt the same way about the Bob's Red Mill Gluten free oatmeal until I figured out that it requires longer to cook, than the Quaker Old Fashioned oatmeal. If I cook it between 10-15 minutes, it turns out pretty close to regular oatmeal. Give it a try, it can't hurt. Patti -
ARCHIVED Help! Disaster Lurking In The Oven Mitts (vent)

I'm sorry that you had such a stressful time over the holidays. My family, especially my mom, has been so good about fixing gluten-free food for my 14 year old DD. She made a separate pan of hashbrown potatoes, after calling me to find out which brand to buy. My sister bought a brand of ham that I had checked to make sure it was gluten-free. I try... -
Culver's has been very accommodating about gluten-free and allergy related requests. My daughter loves a chocolate shake but it has to be made with the chocolate culver's custard, not the chocolate syrup. We ask for a clean scoop and to have them clean the shake machine. Most often they will actually turn and show you as they are doing the cleaning. ...

ARCHIVED A Warning For All Celiacs Going Off To College (and Their Parents)
PattiD2 replied to ajgilboy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm sorry to hear about your experience. It sounds like you had tried to be proactive but the school didn't follow through. Do you have a 504 plan? We are getting one set up for my 14 year old daughter, so we have a legal plan to back us up, when necessary. Unfortunately, the medical records people for our doctor, are refusing to release her medical records... -
ARCHIVED School And Coping With Pain
PattiD2 replied to PattiD2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm sorry that I mentioned it but I do appreciate the other advice. Obviously, I am not going to get a new husband over this. We are both trying to figure this out, we just have different approaches. I think in some ways we help balance each other out. -
ARCHIVED School And Coping With Pain
PattiD2 replied to PattiD2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree that we need a new GI, but as is often the case, not always easy. My DH is a pediatrician and coworker, of this GI. Although he is trying to keep an open mind, he tends to see things from the conventional medicine point of view. For instance, he was very relieved when they diagnosed IBS, because it is not a serious disease. I was appalled that... -
ARCHIVED School And Coping With Pain

We are in the process of applying for a 504 for accommodations at school. They hired a school psychologist at her middle school, instead of a second counselor, who has been very helpful and willing to adjust things for her. We are beginning to talk about home instruction, further assessments and pre-tests along with compacting her curriculum. The teachers... -
ARCHIVED School And Coping With Pain
PattiD2 replied to PattiD2's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I appreciate your insight. She has constant pain in her lower abdomen below her belly button, with occasional sharp pains on the side of her stomach, ranging from a low of 3-5, to a high of 7-8. Most days, her pain is constantly there. It has even started waking her up over the last couple of weeks. She has been gluten free for almost five months.... -
ARCHIVED School And Coping With Pain

My 14 year old DD, has had a terrible couple of weeks where she has been in constant pain. The pain gets worse after she eats, so it is a challenge to find food she will try and she is losing weight. Our Pediatric GI person has now diagnosed her with IBS, in addition to the celiac and EE. She had a colonscopy and blood tests, in August, after 3 months of... -
ARCHIVED Confused With Biopsy Results
PattiD2 replied to Luisa2552's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
My daughter had original positive blood test that came back down to normal after 10 weeks on gluten-free diet. Moderate but not complete response to gluten-free diet. Lymphocytes on first biopsy, clear on follow up biopsy at 10 weeks gluten-free. Doctor has discussed gluten challenge some day in the future. I'm not convinced that we could go through... -
ARCHIVED What To Do For Pain? Please Help!
PattiD2 replied to Virgie's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My heart goes out to you! There is nothing worse than seeing your child in pain, but knowing that you can't fix it for them. Hopefully, you will get a quick diagnosis and resolution of her problems. The gluten-free diet is tough in the beginning, but it does get easier as you do it. There is also a growing awareness of celiac disease and gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Is A Gluten Challenge Worth It?
PattiD2 replied to PattiD2's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
She has been tested for everything that you mentioned. She is seeing a very good rheumotologist who has been evaluating her other autoimmune symptoms. They were concerned about the elevated ANA but it came down shortly after she started gluten-free and has stayed down. Thankfully, she has tested negative to Lupus, RA, crohns, etc. She saw an ophthalmologist... -
ARCHIVED Is A Gluten Challenge Worth It?

Our GI doctor was trained at Cincinnati so she is very familiar with EE. She did have biopsies taken for EGE and they came back without eos. Slides from her first endoscopy were sent to Cinicinnati for a second opinion. They agreed with the EE diagnosis but suggested further celiac testing because they didn't think it was EGE. She is on zantac, zyrtec... -

My 13 year old DD has been quite sick with severe stomach pain and occasional hives and diarrhea since January. She had an endoscopy in March, where they diagnosed eosinophilic esophagitis which is an allergic type inflammation in her throat. The treatment for that did help the swelling in her throat but it did not help the stomach pain so the GI doctor... -
ARCHIVED Closed Throat/ Lump In Throat Feeling
PattiD2 replied to Jill1028's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My DD has been diagnosed with eosinophilic esophagitis which is inflammation in her throat, probably caused by an allergic reaction. Diagnosis involves multiple biopsies taken in different areas of the esophagus to rule out GERD and to count the number of eosinophils in each area. This is a relatively rare disease but is being diagnosed more each year.... -
ARCHIVED Why Is The Biopsy Necessary?
PattiD2 replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My 13 year old DD had an endoscopy in April to check for eosinophilic esophagitis, which is a cell mediated allergic reaction that can cause swelling in the throat or digestive tract. She had a positive diagnosis in the esophagis but undetermined in the duodenum. After 6 weeks of steroids and an elimination diet, her throat was getting better but she continued... -
ARCHIVED Camp In Midwest For 13 Yr Old?
PattiD2 posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My daughter has been quite sick for the last couple of months. She is starting to feel a little better on a gluten-free diet but she is still not back to normal. She is disappointed that she does not have any camps planned for this summer. Is there a gluten-free camp option in the midwest? Any other suggestions? -
I have silicon pans for muffins, bread and a cookie sheet but I have used all of them for regular baking. Do I need to replace them to do gluten-free baking for my daughter? Can they be cleaned enough to be safe?

ARCHIVED Friends Who Don't Get It.
PattiD2 replied to lizzydotcom.'s topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I know exactly what u mean. I'm going three months without gluten to see if I have Celiac disease. A week after I started this, there I went to a parade/festival thing. They sell the best cheese curds there, but I couldn't have them because they had a flour coating. I had explained to all of my friends about Celiac disease, and how I couldn't eat gluten...
