  1. Sorry to bring back an old thread... So I've been gluten free for about a week and I feel AMAZING. I can concentrate again! just in time for finals. I've been able to exercise for more than 20 minutes at a time, too. My stomach is almost flat again. Of course; everyone thinks I'm a hypochondriac b/c my test was negative but whatever, I feel better....I...

  3. I'm going to try an elimination diet this week, and go back on meat. I KNOW that the vegetarian fake-meat stuff makes me sick because I'm literally bent over after I eat it, probably b/c of the huge amounts of gluten/soy/whatever else is in it. So I didn't even eat much of that, but the whole vegetarian diet I think exacerbates whatever intolerances I do...
  4. I got more tests done because even when I was on the celiac diet I was tired a lot of time; slept too often, had other depression symptoms; I still had stomach-aches diarreah and bleeding (every few months). The most irritating thing, in terms of functioning is the foggy-headed feeling and the being tired most of the time. I tested negative for lyme; mono...
  5. yeah, I'd be willing to bet it's the same thing, sort of a throbbing sensation near the jawbone; when I got tested for mono my doc said the glands were normal, as well.
  6. I don't know what genes they tested me for, I knew there was more than one and I asked about that, but all he said was that it was negative and I could eat gluten. yeah....thats worked out well, I look about 3 months pregnant half the time thanks to the bloat. lol.
  7. Yeah, I knew the IBS thing was crap. My doctor kept forgetting that I had been on a celiac diet for 18 years, too. He was like "Well let's see, no damage to your villi so you must not have celiac" and I was like, "uhh...well you see I have been religiously avoiding gluten for 18 years as I have told you numerous times over numerous office visits--so their...
  8. This is an odd and long-winded question, basically I am a college student who was diagnosed with celiac waaaaaay before it was popular '91 and now have been told that my genetic test is negative...but, wait for it....I STILL GET SICK. Hi I haven't posted in a long time. I had a series of tests done in august/september/october and found out (thankfully...
  9. a recipe for granola would be awesome, I pay $6 a bag! (well, its a huge bag, lasts me like a week) at wholefoods for "bakery on main extreme fruit and nut granola" its amazing.
  10. I think when I'm supporting myself and have a kitchen (sometime in the distant future lol) I'll go vegan but it's too hard when you have no kitchen, and some of the more substantial vegan dishes at my shcool (like tofu-stuffed shells with marinara sauce) are not gluten-free. I know it's possible to go vegan and be gluten-free but as you said, sometimes the...
  11. I know, it's not so much gluten free food that's expensive, it's more the gluten free replacement stuff that I crave that I'm used to eating (not everyday but a few times a week): rice crust frozen pizza, whole foods banana bread, muffins, brownies etc etc. I just feel like I'm not getting enough carbs because all I eat is fish and vegetables and fruit. plus...
  12. I never noticed how expensive healthy gluten-free food is until I actually started paying for it. I'm in college and it's a lot easier than I thought to avoid gluten. There's usually some variety of fish and rice and veggies (the vegan section is usually safe) at the dining hall. I dont eat red meat or dairy (I think I may be intolerant of dairy) and usually...

    ARCHIVED New Here

Thanks so much for all the restaurant suggestions! I'll be sure to find out how to get to them. I hope I meet lots of people who like going out for sushi...I'm at Northeastern, across the street from the Museum of Fine Arts. I move in tommorrow. I still havent quite figured out the dining hall situation yet, they have brown rice and veggies though (not a...
  14. I worked at a restaurant that served ice cream and whenever someone had a food allergy and requested that the scoop be washed most of the scoopers just dunked it in sanitizer. Obviously, since I have celiac I would actually wash, rinse and santize it---but sadly a lot of people working at restaurants (particularly teenagers making minimum wage) don't really...

    ARCHIVED New Here

My school has on campus apartments with kitchens---but I didnt think to request one until very recently---and I probably wont be able to get one now, and if I could I think I would have to be in the international dorm and I'm not sure I'd want to live there. I did call the school (Northeastern) earlier in the summer, and they are AWFUL as far as food allergies...
  16. I'm 18 and I LOVE envirokids peanutbutter panda puffs... I was diagnosed at 1 and a half, there wasnt as much gluten free stuff around then (early 90's), I think, or at least the selection seems to have gotten much more palatable. People actually know what celiac is now, too. Best of luck!
  17. I'm sort of sad to say something negative about PF's because I think their food is amazing--but I had a going-away party at PF Chang's Boston ( I moved for the summer ) and I got glutened after ordering off the gluten free menu. I asked for the Pf Chang's gluten free version of the crispy chicken (sort of looked like General Tsu's--can't remember what they...

    ARCHIVED New Here

Thanks everyone for the suggestions! I think I will print out one of those japanese restaurant cards, that would help a lot. I have a friend who also has celiac who eats/drinks distilled vinegars and distilled alchohol from wheat, but I grew up avoiding them, I'm not sure if they make me sick or not. Also if I don't know for sure that the ginger is pickled...

    ARCHIVED New Here

Hi, I'm new here, I'm starting college in boston in the fall and I was wondering if anyone knows of any sushi places that cater to people with celiac. I'm fine with bringing my own soy sauce but I mean, and this may sound very politically incorrect, the problem is that whenever I've gone to a good sushi place I am unable to communicate well with the waitor...
