  1. I agree - a definite diagnosis would be nice - for my daughter too. But feeling better is even nicer, if gluten-free is doing that for you as it is my daughter, continue - diagnosis or not.
  2. Be very glad the doctor is willing to go on the bloodwork. The biopsy is expensive even with insurance and you would have to wait until after to go gluten-free. You can get started getting healthy immediately . On the leg cramping, I have heard it can be symptomatic of low potassium level. If so, then it could be related to celiac disease. If...
  3. LOL- didn't intend to mislead anyone--I am not a doctor - just feel like one after no luck with getting a diagnosis from ped GI here in Indiana.
  4. Sue You gave me some input previously - I am happy to say there is hope for a good night's rest! In my house, it is the gluten-free diet. After 3 days, my dd was waking only once a night and falling back to sleep easier. Then she slept through the night 3 nights straight - I don't think she had ever done that in her life (she is 3 next week). Her digestive...

    ARCHIVED Celiac Runners

Just a guess - maybe not enough carbohydrates. All my favorite carbs were wheat. Also a friend in my running club had some of the same feelings when he was on the Atkins diet.
  6. Mrs. Leeper's brand makes rice and corn spaghetti, also corn spiral pasta, probably other items but my store only carries these. I like the corn a bit better but both are good. I can find them in my local Kroger grocery. They have been on sale for the past few weeks - I stocked up. My entire family enjoys it. Bonus - Mrs. Leeper's Company donates money...
  7. Try the diet for a while - the biopsy is very expensive, not completely without risks and there is the chance of a false negative which gets you back to square one or before square one it seems. That was our case - did the biopsy, wanted to trust the doc's expertise and - it came back normal. Went back to not watching her diet and her condition deteriorated...
  8. Update on my daughter - we are one week gluten-free! It took only a few days for her stools to become firm and stay that way. Her sleep patterns have improved from waking 2-3 times a night and having trouble getting back to sleep. By midweek, she was waking once a night and returning to sleep easily. The past two nights, she has slept through the...
  9. Weighing in with Canadian Karen, Celiac is linked to osteoporosis (sp). I think definitely could make bones more fragile particularly in undiagnosed, untreated celiacs. Has she been gluten-free long? After her body heals and is able to absorb nutrients more efficiently, her bones should get stronger.
  10. Celiac Sprue Association - website www.csaceliacs.org If you choose to go gluten-free, they put out an annual Product Listing. You can also find support groups in your area on their website. University of Chicago Celiac Disease Program 773-702-7593 My dd had postive anitgliadin, classic symptoms, but normal biopsy. I was initially relieved but...
  11. Surely, others have had this issue - any Catholic Celiacs out there? I hope it doesn't seem the stats are exaggerated since anyone who knows basic math knows that 1 in 133 would be less than 1%, not the 2-3 % as Oberman said.
  12. My guess is the runs will return. The behavioral changes may just be the first signs. My daughter lost her hair after 3 solid weeks of no solid movements early last winter. She is very moody, has screaming fits like she doesn't know how to stop. I know she is 2 (nearly 3 now) but it is not normal. She also doesn't sleep well. Her Antigliadin levels...
  13. I agree with your statement about not long consuming gluten again. Also, I've heard different things about how much gluten needs to be consumed prior to testing. Despite test results, I think follow what you see works. Maybe all symptoms were not gone while she was gluten-free, then you decided on tests? Did she originally have other symptoms?
  14. I'll give it a try. We are 3 days gluten-free and my daughter's birthday is in less than 3 weeks. I plan to experiment the next few weeks then serve a gluten-free cake at her party.
  15. Kathy First, change doctors! To not even know there is an antibody test is horrible! Although most doctors won't accept that as diagnosis, they will want to do a biopsy. My husband had many vague symptoms like you described. Our daughter is having trouble; after her positive blood tests, my husband began cutting wheat out of his diet and feeling better...
  16. This is exactly where my daughter is right now! Positive antigliadin, negative biopsy but consistent symptoms that I tracked along with her diet and found the connection to wheat! That is why they did the blood tests; I almost feel like the doctor doesn't acknowledge the possibility that she is still at the least gluten-sensitive because it wasn't his ...
  17. Update for everyone! We got our results a few weeks ago and the biopsy was negative! I should have felt relief or joy but I didn't. He found nothing - so normal, he didn't even want to see her for a follow-up. I hoped he was right; she had been doing better - of course, we had cut way back on gluten-containing foods. I thought maybe whatever it was had...
  18. Waiting on biopsy results for my daughter -- thinking we will end up trying gluten-free diet regardless because I see such a correlation between diarrhea and increased wheat-pasta, pizza, pancakes in her diet. Initially, I was told to go gluten-free immediately prior to the biopsy so I did some research and experimenting as you have. If you are going...
  19. Not sure that anyone will see this post now, but here goes! We went through with the biopsy. It went well, a bit trying when she was coming out of anesthesia. We are now waiting for diagnosis, biopsy results. The doctor doesn't think it is Celiacs. I think it is gluten intolerance of some degree. I really hope something is found with the biopsy, Celiacs...
  20. Me Again! Thanks for all the input. I am so new to all this. I have realized the doctor only had antigliadin test results in hand. I know a "panel" was done. Now I will contact her original doctor and get the complete test results. So I know if the other tests were negative/positive or not done at all. Since I had to call and suggest the tests be...
  21. Thank you both for your replies. The doctor says it is the way to diagnose Celiacs. Could the presence of antigliadin mean anything else? I mean "normal" people do not have an antibody to wheat, right? Doesn't that mean she is gluten-intolerant? Anyone else have ideas?
  22. With positive antibody results and of course, symptoms, what is the need for biopsy? My husband is very reluctant to allow a biopsy on our daughter. I do not know enough to explain this to him, and he was unable to come to the doctor appointment. Thanks Carolyn
