    Just to bring some closure to this topic, I'll tell you how it all came out. There was clearly visible damage when the doc did the scope, and the biopsy came back positive. I was relieved, though I was absolutely not going back to eating gluten regardless of what the test showed. I saw this mostly as a step to take to avoid getting hassled by future doctors...

    Just a couple more days to go, and I'm not sure I'm going to make it. I seem to be losing blood (stools have turned bright green). I'm going to call the doc and see whether we should continue with this.

    No I am not sure what tests I had. I am seeing my GP on Monday morning for by B12 shot (another link to celiac disease) & I am gong to ask for a copy of the reports & ask for another testing. I have been eating gluten again for 9 days. :( It would e interesting to see if my liver enzyemes are elevated again after eating gluten. Thanks everyone for your support.

    Wow, that is one ignorant doctor. It must have been hard not to storm out of there! Many people with celiac are not underweight. Some people actually gain weight as a consequence of celiac. And if he thinks that children can't have celiac, he really needs to educated. Do you know whether they ran the full celiac panel on you? That would be the way...

    I'm going to hope that, since I had such severe malabsorption problems, I'm not completely healed yet.

    That's what I was afraid of! I'll check with the GI who is doing the biopsy and see whether he thinks a week will be adequate. It was my GP who told me to eat gluten for a week, and I'm not sure where she got her info. In the meantime, I guess I'll go make myself another sandwich! I'll be glad when this diagnosis fiasco is over.

    I'm getting biopsied, and have been told I must consume gluten for a week beforehand. (I've been gluten-free for about 2 months now.) I don't want to eat any more gluten than I have to. I've seen suggestions of anything from one slice of bread a day to four. How much do you all think is reasonable? I was so sick prior to going gluten-free that the idea...

    Thanks for the link and the recommendation. I am looking for a GI for the kids. I'll be having a biopsy done next month, but I'll be staying off gluten after that (and getting the kids checked out) regardless of what the biopsy says. I've been sick for a long time, and I don't want the same for them.

    The kids aren't having dramatic symptoms. My 9-y.o. is prone to gas and loose bowel movements. My 7-y.o. doesn't seem to have any symptoms. Both are small for their ages. I just had them tested because I'd just gotten a positive result on the celiac panel. If they do have celiac, I want to catch it so they don't spend years being sick the way I did...

My GP wants me to have a biopsy, but I've already tried a gluten free diet and found that it helps me, so I'll be gluten free regardless of what the biopsy shows.     I know this is probably a dense question, but I have to ask. My children both tested positive for gliadin antibodies. I haven't gotten them in to see a GI yet. Their ped, who ordered the celiac panel, suggested that we could just wait a few months and then retest them, because the gliadin antibodies weren't necessarily a sign of celiac. I asked him about...

    My main concerns with just changing their diet now are compliance (especially with my younger son), and that we wouldn't have an actual diagnosis. (That would probably only matter if I needed to take them to a GI later on.) Do they give kids a general anesthetic for the biopsy? It seems like something that would be pretty scary for a child.

But my children tested positive for gliadin antibodies, and my GP would now like me to be biopsied to see whether I have true celiac disease.
