  1. I was diagnosed a couple of years ago, and just recently started with the pain in the liver/gallbladder area. If your pain persists on the gluten-free diet, let your doctor know. There is a lot of correlation between liver disease and celiac. I wasn't aware of it until just recently when my liver enzyme panel came back high and I started doing the research...
  2. Those are pretty high numbers--your little one must have been pretty sick. I know I was pretty miserable when I was diagnosed and I came in at 127. But, I did as much research as I could, thoroughly cleaned my kitchen and was really disciplined. I brought the number down to 6 in six months. Every one reacts differently, but if you're really careful, your...
  3. Welcome to the group. I had a lot of the same symptoms that you listed, but I was lucky enough that I didn't get any symptoms until my youngest had left for college. I can't imagine trying to care for children when you feel bad all the time. The thing with all the symptoms that you listed are that you don't just wake up one day and feel tired and achy...
  4. I agree that you should check with your doctor before adding an iron supplement. My doctor put me on 325 mg of Ferrous Sulfate. I buy the Rugby Natural. They have them at CVS, but you have to go up to the pharmacist. You don't need a prescription, but they don't keep them on the shelves.
  5. This coming Wednesday marks the 2nd anniversary of my diagnosis. At that time, I was suffering with severe anemia, osteomalacia, migraines, bloating, the big D, and--most devastating to a woman--my hair was falling out. Now, when I read the entries of the newbies and hear the desperate tone in their comments, it all comes back to me how physically weak...
  6. When I was first diagnosed, I was completely overwhelmed. The biggest help for me was the book, The Gluten Free Bible. I've loaned my copy out to a couple of other people who were diagnosed after me, and they've all gone out and bought their own copy. My biggest advice is: 1) have your doctor test all your nutrient levels and get on some gluten free supplements...
  7. We only cook gluten free for supper and weekends when we are both home. For breakfast, my DH keeps some regular cereal and has regular bread in the house to take his lunch for work. But when it comes to supper and any evening snacks, he only eats gluten-free with me. He figured out it was a really big turn off to me to even think about kissing him when...
  8. I got a tortilla press for Christmas, and I really want to make some authentic corn tortillas. But, I've learned that corn tortillas are made from masa harina (corn flour/meal treated with lime), and not just corn meal or corn flour. The only masa harina I've found is Bob's Red Mill, and it isn't identified as gluten free. Has anyone used Bob's masa harina...
  9. One of the hardest social situations is trying to get non celiacs to understand that celiac isn't like diabetes or a weight-loss diet. You can just cheat and take more insulin or work out a little harder. I almost think it is harder for celiacs like yourself--who didn't suffer complete systemic symptoms. After having anemia, hair loss, rickets, migraines...
  10. My family has been great. They're still learning, but they are making an effort. My husband's family is a different story. Thanksgiving was a disaster. When I arrived at Thanksgiving, the first thing out of MIL's mouth was, "I made dressing, I bet you can't eat that." My husband was horrified. She then preceded to point at everything on the table...

    ARCHIVED Bread

I didn't like any of the store bought breads, so I just didn't eat bread until I started feeling well enough to cook my own. The best recipe I've found so far is in Bette Hagman's cookbook, The Gluten - Free Gourmet Bakes Bread. Her Four Flour Bread Mix is great.
  12. Hairloss and bone pain were actually my two biggest symptoms and helped me on my path to celiac diagnosis. I was putting up with the fatigue, but when my hair started falling out, I went to the doctor. My primary care physician checked hormone and thyroid levels (which were normal), said there was nothing she could do, and sent me to a dermatologist. The...
