  1. Don't let the autism post by Rachel scare you. The statistics on autism are two to six children out of 1,000. However, the C677T variant is extremely common: 13% of the general population are homozygous and 42% are heterozygous. Some estimates are higher on the incidence and there are other variants as well. I was only tested after repeat miscarriages...
  2. I do not know the correlation, but I too have the same gene mutation. I only have one copy though, so it is not as bad. I take aspirin and also Folgard (by prescription) along with my prenatals. It is good that you take folic acid, but you should also take B12 and B6 as well. My first was conceived and born with no issues. I lost two in between...
  3. Can you buy her a book? It wouldn't be her own research. She's going to have to read whatever you give her. Personally, I would feel more comfortable with my MIL if she read it from a third party "authority" versus me telling her. I have a wonderful relationship wtih my MIL but I would be concerned that she felt I was overdoing it - which even my...
  4. Diapers never occured to me... I tried Kushies once and absolutely hated them. They were so thick that I was convinced my DD would become bow-legged! And they NEVER dried! Any suggestions? I've heard of Snap... bumGenious... I will certainly do whatever it takes. I like the idea of cloth at her age, because I don't like the idea of putting a cloth...
  5. There are a few out there. If you search for gluten free cat food, some will come up. I also have seen a vet column in our local paper and he has recipes, so that prompted me to look for those. There is a website called healthyrecipesforpets.com that has some. I'll keep looking for that vet site. Buying it can be very expensive.
  6. Thanks for the replies and ideas. I did think about putting the animals on gluten free diets. Especially after I read that malignancies in animals may be due to gluten. I love our pets and wouldn't want to give them anything that would hurt them. She had a low grade fever at the dr's ofc, so I think it must have been something else. I've only fed...
  7. My daughter had diarrhea this morning. Her regular morning diaper was full and she just had another one after eating breakfast. She and I are gluten free and our dinners are gluten free, so I am sure she hasn't had any. It didn't look like her gluten diapers. It wasn't fatty (gross I know) and there was no undigested food in it. Just brown mush. Could...
  8. I made gluten-free bread from Bob's Red Mill mix and I use Pamela's Baking Mix often. I reacted to the bread - asthma attack, but I've never reacted to Pamela's that way. I checked the ingredient list and the only difference that I could react to would be the sorghum. I've eaten garbanzo and fava beans so don't think it is those flours. I've read about...
  9. I've noticed when I eat products with sorghum I have an asthma attack. I begin to wheeze, cough and am unable to catch my breath. Anyone else have this issue? It seems like my pool of available foods to eat is shrinking daily....
  10. Onelildream, I took my dd off once at 11 months for a couple months and then let her have it again because her ped didn't think it was the reason she wasn't gaining. She got all of her symptoms back and lost more weight, etc. I started a food diary and when I went back to him with it, he agreed that she could have a "malabsorbtion issue" and said to take...
  11. Yes, I can see the decision to test a child who is asymptomatic would be a much more difficult. In that situation, I do think I would want to know as best as I could. My dd is young, so a diet change isn't all that terrible to her. Really it is just hard on me since I am the one who has to decide what to feed her at home and when we are out and about....
  12. Thank you both. I am so excited that my dd is getting better. More laughter today and she is really walking a lot. We played outside for a long time without her getting so tired. I can't imagine ever intentionally letting her have gluten again. I do need to look beyond other people being insensitive and just focus on the joy I feel when I see her do...
  13. I don't know how to insert quotes, so I will paraphrase... Denise61 mentioned getting the endoscopy done prior to making such drastic diet changes.... I disagree. My dd stopped gaining weight at 9 months. At a little over a year old, I took her off gluten for a few weeks (and eliminated it from mine since she was nursing) and she immediately began...
  14. My 18 month DD has been off gluten for 10 days now and among other wonderful things, I've noticed that her BMs are much more solid. My husband and I have marvelled a couple of times that she could pass them - they seem very large. Gross, but not the point of my post. Before she was off gluten, she would fill two diapers a day, sometimes 3, with that...
  15. I posted some time ago about my DD and my thinking she had Celiacs. Well, I took her off gluten and she almost immediately showed improvement. Diapers less frequent and stool not so mushy, etc. Her cheeks looked fuller and she seemed much happier. She began gaining weight at almost double normal rates. I don't know why I let other people push me into...
  16. I know this thread is a few days old and have debated commenting. My DD is 15 months old and has issues with gluten. The house is now gluten free and she has greatly improved. Down to 2 diapers a day that are formed versus 6 or 7 undigested food mush. I decided that my son and husband can eat gluten products when they are away from the house, but...
  17. I've been doing lots of reading lately in reference to my DD and her gluten issues. I noticed that some of the advertised products on this site state that they conform to Codex standards. It is my understanding that Codex standards allow a very small percentage of gluten (.002% ppm - is that right?). Would that be equivalent to CC? I am a little confused...
  18. Thanks Vicky. From all that I read at this site and others, it didn't seem like a stretch that she could have an intolerance. She didn't have the drastic symptoms that other children seem to have, but there were often days that I didn't give her gluten products, not on purpose but because at this age she eats mostly chicken, veggies and fruits and breastmilk...
  19. Thanks RiceGuy, I talked to her pediatrician and told him that I felt that eliminating gluten (mostly - but not totally - lots of things I didn't know had gluten in them) was the reason she gained 1 pound in 5 weeks. Normal for her age is 4oz a month. Prior to that, she had not gained even 1 ounce in 6 months, so he was willing to listen. He said...
  20. Thanks for your response. I am seeing her pediatrician today and will talk with him about diet. Do I need to stop dairy as well? For how long? I appreciate your help.
  21. I am glad I found this board. I am hoping someone can help me. A little history - my 15 month DD had not gained any weight at her 1 yr appt from her 6 month - not even an ounce. She eats very well so I was shocked. She started to look so tiny and people would comment to me about how small she looked. She had been in the 50th percentile for weight...
