ARCHIVED Possible Crohn's Or Refractory?
skymgirl replied to duckface2's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
It's possible - I'm living proof! I was diagnosed with Celiac through bloodwork, and diagnosed with Crohn's a week later after a CT scan confirmed thickening/inflammation of my terminal ileum. I have a colonoscopy scheduled in late May so my GI can determine the extent of the Crohn's, for now I've been told it's mild and I'm on a low dose of an 5-ASA drug... -
ARCHIVED Self Diagnosis
skymgirl replied to mom2easton&eli's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hmmm...the Frosted Flakes are interesting because they're not safe for a Celiac to eat. (I miss them a lot!) They are made with malt flavoring, which needs to be avoided as it contains barley (and therefore gluten). You could be experiencing sensitivity/allergy to wheat rather then Celiac/gluten intolerance. Obviously, the best thing to do would be... -
The last time I was in Ruby Tuesday's with my family I signed up for their rewards club. (I've been lucky to never get sick when I've eaten there, the servers have all been really helpful and accommodating.) One of the perks of the club is that you get a free entree for your birthday, mine is next Wednesday so they emailed me the coupon today...with the...

ARCHIVED Crohns Patient New To Celiac
skymgirl replied to redspot321's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi there - I have both Crohn's and Celiac - diagnosed with both in a span of 2 weeks. I always had symptoms of Celiac so I wasn't too surprised when my blood work came back positive, my blood work showed positive for IBD as well. (My GI could feel the inflammation in my terminal ileum during my exam.) I was diagnosed with Crohn's after a CT scan,... -
ARCHIVED All Is Clear! Amazing!
skymgirl replied to anonymical7's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Any bleeding from "there" can be scary, so it's a good idea to get it checked. Hope you didn't think I was trying to scare you and say you might have Crohn's, I was just saying that I was surprised when I was diagnosed with it and hadn't expected it, which is why I'm happy I went the medical route and got tested, rather then just went gluten-free on... -
ARCHIVED All Is Clear! Amazing!
skymgirl replied to anonymical7's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Agreed - especially about the internal bleeding. I might sound silly, but how do you know it's stopped if it's internal? It's great that you've found a diet that is making you feel better, and testing can be frustrating, but I tend to think it's better to be cautious and rule other things out. (My own personal story - I was pretty sure I was Celiac,... -
ARCHIVED Readi-cat
skymgirl replied to LDJofDenver's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I feel for you - I had to drink 2 bottles of that stuff a few weeks ago. I drank the orange one, and besides C (which they warned me might happen) and nausea from the taste, I didn't have any other side-effects. A word of advice - make sure it's as cold as possible when you're ready to drink it, it's better when it's really cold. Good luck on your test... -
ARCHIVED What Next?
skymgirl replied to mjhurd31's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I would use caution w/some of the symptoms you've been having to at least rule out anything going on with a doctor first. Just for the fact that you could have something like Crohn's or Colitis which both have shared symptoms of Celiac. I have both Celiac and Crohn's and while being gluten-free "cures" my Celiac, it can't cure Crohn's, which I need to be... -
Do you have pets yourself at home? I ask this because many pet shops sell airtight containers (steel or plastic) for holding pet food. You could broach the subject by saying something like "You know, my _____'s (insert dog/cat) was always going stale because of leaving the bag open, so I tried this container I got from _____ (insert pet shop) and it's made...

ARCHIVED What Next?
skymgirl replied to mjhurd31's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Were you tested for IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) in addition to IBS? And do you know which tests they ran for Celiac? There is an entire panel they should run, a lot of time doctors can be neglectful in ordering the whole panel, they just order one or two tests. I would ask to see a copy of the report from the lab so you can see exactly what was tested... -
Sorry you are going through this - you and I are in a similar place. I got my diagnosis of Celiac last Wednesday, then was diagnosed with Crohn's on Friday...it was a rough week. I have been going back and forth between being relieved that I have a diagnosis to angry that I have two diseases. Then I feel ridiculous for being upset about either of them...

ARCHIVED Could I Have Celiac?
skymgirl replied to dannydowner's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi there. Some of your symptoms certainly sound like they could be Celiac related, but at the same time Celiac symptoms can be similar to IBD (Crohn's, colitis), so it's a very good idea to visit a doctor and get checked out thoroughly. Depending on the relationship you have with your regular doctor (GP) you can talk to him or her and ask them to run blood... -
I'll be 30 next month, and I just got my positive blood results last night. I've had symptoms since I was a kid, but was never tested for Celiac. I started suspecting it about a year ago, and finally got myself to a GI who was incredibly dismissive and just told me I was a "stressed out person who had IBS like the majority of women my age". I left that...

Sorry you're going through this, I know it can be rough! Is there a way that you could have a holiday at your home and you could do the cooking? That way you can make sure your turkey is safe, and you can invite family members to bring their own dishes to contribute to the meal. (That you could just pop in the over or microwave to heat up, taking the proper...

I had a great experience with them as well. I'm dairy-free right now so I couldn't enjoy butter on my rolls, but just eating the rolls on their own was heavenly for me! They did a great job with my fish (served w/Gluten-free breadcrumbs) and the waiter made sure I felt comfortable and was well taken care of. I'll definitely go back there!

ARCHIVED I Think I've Got Celiac But Test Results Say Otherwise.
skymgirl replied to MarkO's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hi Mark - You have nothing to lose by trying the gluten-free diet to see how it makes you feel. Sometimes blood work can be tricky and hide celiac disease, there can be false negatives. If you try the diet and your symptoms go away I think that will give you a good indication of whether avoiding gluten is the right thing to do. Of course, it would be... -
ARCHIVED Potential Cure Getting Closer?
skymgirl replied to Ryan T's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I think before you make a blanket statement about people's ignorance you should have a little practical understanding of some of the practices of the pharmaceutical industry. I have worked for companies (medical eduction companies) that were paid millions of dollars to teach doctors how to prescribe unnecessary, possibly harmful, or extraordinarily expensive... -
ARCHIVED Potential Cure Getting Closer?
skymgirl replied to Ryan T's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't know...perhaps I'm in the minority here but I couldn't see myself jumping on board for this. I've worked in the pharma industry, and actually left it because I couldn't handle the deceptive practices they engage in. I would be very wary of accepting a solution that involves dependancy on the pharma industry. Also, there are insurance/financial... -
ARCHIVED I Get Neurotic Every Time I Eat
skymgirl replied to Lovey25's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Kind of getting off the original topic here, but what about subbing soy milk in for regular milk, Klauren? I know they do use soy milk in drinks if you request it, so that should keep you lactose free and still let you enjoy Starbucks at the same time. To the original topic, I'm a month gluten-free today, and thought I would celebrate with some fries...
