  1. For what it's worth, I definitely think you should go to lunch. A couple of things pop to mind to help deal with this. One, you can look on the univ.'s web page or call the admissions office or the events office and ask about casual lunch places in the area. Often they even have information about vegetarian friendly or allergy friendly places that...
  2. Update on the original post - I went to the store today and talked with bakery manager. He was very responsive and said that the staffer I'd spoken with last night (when I found out about this) had followed up and sent out an email to the staff. They had fixed one label and, while we were talking, he took down the remainder that said "gluten-free" so...
  3. Ok, now I feel absolutely dreadful. I don't want to see anyone get sick or hurt either. I hadn't gotten from my emotional mess of a response to the situation to thinking logically about all the implications. Really just found out about this tonight when I asked about the new cases. No one from the bakery was there and it was right before closing...
  4. Is this a basic cooking class? You might email the teacher and ask what kinds of things they have planned for the course.
  5. I hadn't really been thinking about doing anything, just was upset, and thinking it was mainly my fault for not suspecting or checking further into how these things were made. I should really do what I can to make sure that their products are labeled correctly - and probably, that they put up a disclaimer saying that the food isn't gluten-free or safe...
  6. I had the brain-fog and laziness for a long time too, before the diagnosis. It made me hate myself and I couldn't understand why I had no energy, etc. The first time I was tested for celiac, I had a false negative too. I took B12 by injection for years before finally getting REALLY sick with the celiac disease. In the meantime, it had helped a lot. The...
  7. Oh, this is awful and I'm so sorry to hear it. I teach at a private college & I have celiac. My advice is to make an appointment with the Dean of Students at your college RIGHT AWAY if you haven't talked to him/her already and go in and tell him/her the entire story. Bring the names of the people you've already talked to at the college, any documents...
  8. I just needed to vent a bit to some people who would (I hope) understand. My local co-op carries a bunch of freshly-baked goods - cookies, muffins, brownies, etc - that are labeled "made without gluten" and/or "gluten free". I've been diagnosed with celiac disease & gluten-free for 2 years, and I've been eating these products for the past year. My...
  9. Argh. Good point. I've gotten to the point where I'm not as careful with familiar brands; I'll have to recheck them all. Fun times with the phone! I eat mostly organic, local meat, I think I'd been assuming they wouldn't do any of those packaging tricks, but, you know what they say about "assume". I'm going to be very sad, though, if it's my peanut butter...
  10. Thanks for the responses! Yes, definitely part of the problem is having felt like I had this thing under control. Also, that I could (mentally, at least) relax. Maybe I relaxed too much? I seriously hope it's just a bug ... I really don't know about giving up soy; I'm even finding myself resistant to going back to dairy-free. Would it be weird for...
  11. Hi, all- I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease two years ago and went gluten-free; I was pretty sick, ended up in the hospital before I finally started getting better. Although I had some lingering symptoms, after about a year I was feeling pretty good in general. I've never intentionally eaten gluten and I'd only ever had some short-term D after the occasional...
