I like the idea of getting one of those yoga styrofoam rollers for my hips that was mentioned. Where might a good place be to purchase one?
I bought mine at REI, but you might also find one on the internet.

My sciatic nerve pain has been increasing of late. I periodically think I have solved this problem, and then it comes back again. Am discovering using St. John's Wort oil on painful areas actually does help. However I also do yoga and walking daily as well as push ups and sit ups etc. to help deal with it. Was originally caused by a childhood accident which severely damaged my L-5 vertebrae and whacked my sacrum. However I also discovered that the celiac has greatly exacerbated this by having reduced the myelin sheath that covers my nerves. They have improved since I have been 100% gluten free these last 2 years plus also take co-enzyme B vitamins. I also take a host of minerals since my body is low on them. Most recent additions are MSM and Silica. Has really helped me to build stronger tendons and thus a stronger body overall (am now up to 60 modified push ups!). I realize to really heal though I need to create even more muscle since part of my bony material just isn't there. However I notice that the connecting spots in my butt are sore from the sciatica when I really stretch my legs using psoas stretches!!
This nerve pain is wracking my body at night more often than not of late...
I am almost thinking I need to start making gluten-free baked goods to get more safflower oil etc. in my diet since I am actually low in the commonly used oils due to my back to the basics diet. Thing is though that I am also very sensitive to anything that encourages yeast or candida production, having had far too many antibiotics in my life. I am allergic to all nuts as well as sesame, however I do love and actually usually manage to eat lots of sunflower seeds.
Any suggestions, experience or commiserations?

Ugh, I can commiserate, although I am newly gluten-free. The pain was so bad at night, even though I was doing yoga every day. When I went gluten-free I started taking capsules by VegLife with flax,fish and borage oil. I also started with Health from the Sun calcium-Magnesium tablets. And my sciatica is now completely gone. Another thing that I found helped was rolling on the hip muscle with one of those hard styrofoam yoga rollers. Good luck, I hope it gets better for you soon.

Exactly. They're all being misdiagnosed. Maybe you need to start looking for guys with IBS because eventually they'll end up being diagnosed as celiac most likely.

Given the short amount of time you've been gluten-free, I'm guessing there's a good chance you'll change your view on this.

It's true. Maybe I can start off with only gluten-free men, and then kind of add back in the gluten-eaters as I try adding back other things I've cut out like cheese and nightshades.........

Hi, I'm about two weeks into being gluten free. I've tossed everything around me that contains gluten, including my favorite lipstick. Now I feel somewhat safe, and I think I'm reluctant to risk exposure to gluten by dating someone who eats it. Is that terrible of me? I also don't know if it would be hard for someone who isn't celiac to understand what I go through. How do all you celiac singletons out there navigate the gluten-ated dating world?

I posted on a topic where there is a lot of discussion currently, but my post isn't appearing, whereas the other posters are continuing to show up in a back-and-forth discussion. My post may no longer be relevant, because it is taking so long to post. How does the moderation work? Is it one person viewing a topic and allowing posts, or does each person have their own censor?

Yes, basically what ravenwoodglass says. The article discusses that LSD was being used in 1948 to attempt to understand schizophrenia, because of its psychoactive properties. It mentions that LSD is derived from gluten grains. It then talks about Dr Curtis Dohan, and his research into the connection between celiac disease and schizophrenia, and how symptoms of schizophrenia abated on a gluten-free dairy-free diet during a study he made of a locked psychiatric ward.It then goes on to discuss the huge impact of gluten on our brains. Definitely NOT promoting the use of LSD, particularly to us celiacs:blink:

You are wrong on many fronts, no offense. Go ahead and look on erowid. Most arguments about LSD and whatnot are not based in science or didn't consider that people weren't taking them in optimal conditions. There is even a great scientific journal written by Stanislav Grof available online for reading. But anyway I don't want to argue about that because people have strong opinions about drugs. What I do want to point out, though, is that every single time I've taken them they have solved a bout of discombobulated digestion if I was having it and definitely helped work through any life problems if I was having any.
There is positive drug use and there is negative drug use.
There's a whole article in the current Journal of Gluten Sensitivity about the correlation between the symptoms of LSD ingestion, and schizophrenia, due to the commonality of psycho-active peptides from gluten grains, LSD being refined from ergot, a grain mold. It's an interesting idea.

I thought Whole Foods had a pretty good record for gluten free food handling training?
The last 2 times I've been out to a restaurant, I have said to the server "I'm going to be a pain in the butt..." and I smile and laugh. It breaks the ice, and if you say "allergy" instead of celiac disease or gluten intolerance, they're more receptive, because they immediately have visions of searching the entire place for an epi pen and the portable paddles.
They understand allergy, "intolerance" just doesn't sound fatal enough.
Oh, I like that strategy! I can imagine that working in a number of situations. And I was bummed, because I tend to trust Whole Foods more than most places. I wrote to the store afterward, and explained the situation, so hopefully their staff will learn about gluten intolerance. Thanks everybody for your responses, it really helps when I'm down:)

I just had my first encounter in Celiacs training. I was at Whole Foods buying chicken breasts. The butcher behind the counter was pouring spices from a large jar into a bowl. When he came over to help me, he started to reach for the chicken. I said, "I'm sorry, I need for you to change your glove first" and he said "but I'm just making chicken.." and I said "I know, but I have a gluten intolerance and I could get very sick". He changed his glove, but looked at me like I was a crazy pain in the a**
I was proud of myself for catching it, but frustrated that this is now my life. I've always been very easy-going and laid back.
Do I now have to be that girl that people roll their eyes about because she's annoying? I know I shouldn't care, and it's about MY health, but I feel like an outsider right now. Any tips? Ways that you've found to communicate without seeming overly paranoid?

I have always had a high metabolism and weight gain has always been a problem. I was up to 117lbs (5'4") and very excited. I coach fall high school softball and am on the road alot. I was diagnosed in july and began losing weight immediately and got down to 105lb by Sept. I need ideas for quick meals on the run or even lunches for work. I teach and so I eat alot of frozen dinners. I don't take my lunch anymore b/c I am not sure what to even pack. Any ideas on how to put weight back on? Any ideas on simple "to go " lunches I can take anywhere? I would appreciate any ideas/help!

I'm also worried about losing weight-I'm 5'11 and weigh 120; lost 5 lbs since I went gluten-free. I've been trying to add to my calorie intake by loading peanut butter on apple slices in-between meals.

The gluten wasn't really hidden it was written on the label just not in a form that was easily recognized. Some gluten grain derived 'ingredients' have been so heavily processed that the gluten is considered to have been 'processed out' of them. Unfortunately some of us we will still react. This can be seen in other countries also like the Codex wheat starch in Europe which is considered gluten-free but makes many of us ill. There are even less regs on supplements than on food where it comes to gluten. All we can do is read labels carefully and double check ingredients when something 'gets' us.
I'm not seeing malt diatase on the label. The product is Pioneer Gluten Free digestive enzymes and herbs. If you know it to have gluten, then I won't take it. I'm just confused, because I bought it as a gluten free product on the gluten free website linked to this website, so I thought it would be safe. I appreciate your advice on this.

I pack rice cakes smothered with reduced fat peanut butter, bananas, apples, sliced apples with peanut butter, Boar's Head lunch meats are all gluten free so I'll pack gluten-free ham and gluten-free crackers, Glutano has a good gluten-free cracker.
I like rice with chunks of chicken and steamed broccoli topped with gluten-free italian dressing. Filling and satisfying!
Mayonaise is not dairy so tuna salad or chicken salad with a side of gluten-free crackers is also good.
Chili is GREAT! You'll have to add your own spices because most mixes contain wheat. Try this one:
Chili - Serves: 8 Active Time: 25 min Total Time: 55 min
1 Tbsp vegetable oil
3 lbs 90% Lean Ground Beef
Salt to taste
1 lb. chopped onions or 2 pkgs (8 oz each) Frozen Cleaned & Cut Chopped Onions
1 lg. green pepper, chopped or 1 pkg (8 oz each) frozen Diced Green Peppers and Onions
3 cloves Garlic, minced
4 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
7 Tbsp (about 2 oz) chili powder
2 tsp ground cumin
2 tsp oregano
1 can (15.5 oz) Dark Red Kidney Beans, drained and rinsed
1 can (15.5 oz) Italian Classics Cannellini Beans, drained and rinsed
2 btls (12 oz each) Chili Sauce (check the ingredients label!)
1 bottle (12 oz) Gluten-Free beer OR 1 can (14.5 oz) Gluten-Free beef broth
Heat vegetable oil on MEDIUM-HIGH; brown ground beef, 8-10 min. Add salt to taste.
Add chopped onions, green peppers, and garlic. Cook, stirring, 3-5 min.
Add Worcestershire sauce; cook 3 min.
Reduce heat to MEDIUM; stir in chili powder, cumin, oregano; cook 5 min.
Reduce heat to LOW; add kidney beans, cannellini beans, chili sauce, beer (or broth); simmer for 30 min, stirring occasionally.
Salsa and corn tortilla chips are a nice snack.
Watch out for hidden gluten and casein - Caramel Coloring, whey, malt, barley.

Hey there.., I have been gluten free for 2 weeks now. I am finding it tough to find a few substitutes for things I enjoy but over all doing ok with it.
However I was feeling a little better and thought maybe I would feel even better taking a probiotic. Now I feel like between the extra fruit, salad and new foods my body is back in gas/bloat and you get the picture.. Anyone have anything similar happen to them? I stopped the probiotic as that was the latest thing added before the ground feel out again.
Hi, I've been gluten free for 1 week, and also was feeling a little better,but then tonight felt horrible and nauseous. I had just drunk a vitamin water, so that was maybe the culprit, but I also had cheese for lunch, and apparently new allergies like lactose intolerance can come up as you detox from gluten. It's hard because you want to help your body, as you did with the probiotic, and I did with the vitamin water. I feel like I've been unknowingly poisoning myself for so long, that now that I know I want to make amends and quickly replenish all the vitamins etc. I've been without. But from what I've read on this forum, most of the old hands say to keep it really simple in the beginning. I'm going to try to stay off of the foods that I've read about that have caused problems for other celiacs, and then eventually add them back in and see how it goes. Good luck to you and me both:)

if it is bright red, it is likely a hemmoroid or a fissure, close to the exit area, and irritated by the constipation. If it is dark, almost black, I would suggest you get to a doctor fairly quickly, as it could be an internal bleed.
Ditch that supplement you're taking, that'll make you sick, as ravenwoodglass said. Watch for ingredients that are derrived from wheat, barley or rye on anything you eat or drink. Sometimes they are not as obvious as all that on the ingredients label, but you have ot learn to figure out what everything is. When in doubt, don't eat it!
For fibre, I eat flax meal regularly, and drink lots and lots of water, rather than take a supplement.
My Celiac has always caused constipation rather than diarrhea (oh how I wished for diarrhea on more than one occasion!) so I can understand the panic at seeing blood!
Try this recipe for a flax muffin. I have one of these at least every other day, with about 1 litre/32 oz of water for breakfast.
Muffin in a minute Serving Size: 1
1/4 cup flax meal (8.09 total carbs, 7.6 fiber) (30 g)
1/2 teaspoon baking powder (0.64 net carbs)
1 packet splenda or other sweetener. I use stevia. (0.9 net carbs)
1 teaspoon cinnamon (1.84 total carbs, 1.2 fiber)
1 large egg (0.6 net carbs)
1 teaspoon butter
(total carbs is 12.07, fiber is 8.8; net carbs is 3.27)
Put the dry ingredients in a coffee mug.
Stir.
Then add the egg and the butter. Mix.
Microwave 1 minute (or more). Take out. slice, butter, eat.
Cream cheese would go nicely, too.
The shape of this can be changed by making it in a bowl.
It can be "toasted" once it's cooked.

Hi, I've been off gluten for 5 days. Today I felt a little constipated for the first time in years. I actually had to think about what it was I was feeling! I had a firmer stool than in a long time, but with it there was a little bit of bright red blood. Is this just my passages getting scraped for the first time in a long time? I started taking the Pioneer digestive enzymes and herbs today-could it be a reaction? Has anyone experienced anything similar when they've recently gone off gluten?
