  1. Wow!! Thanks so much! That's very kind of you. (I can actually tolerate some cod and haddock but as I have developed allergies to all other fish, eventually over the last few years, I kind of avoid it now. I never know when I will suddenly not be able to eat it anymore. ) I am getting very excited about our trip!
  2. Thanks for taking time to respond. For the record, I don't believe I said my husband was perfect. Neither am I. So really, it wouldn't be fair if he was! I do understand that we say things when we are feeling sick that we don't mean. But I don't see how you can express it in such strong terms and then seem surprised that some people respond with "chill...
  3. I had my first post-diagnosis black tie event just this past Monday. As it was for my husband's work (not mine) he called the caterer and spoke to their executive chef and explained my "special needs" right when he RSVP'd. They said no problem - they're used to accommodating gluten-free and allergies. At the event, I did accidentally get the regular dinner...
  4. Well, I am a professional therapist (although not a specialist in marriage counselling). I find the tone of anger, competition, testing and revenge that I've read in a few posts here, to be troubling and saddening. I don't really think this is about the gluten. A healthy relationship is one where the two partners really desire the other to be healthy and...
  5. The first couple of weeks I was gluten-free I was either starving or stuffed. Didn't matter how much or how little I ate - I was never comfortable. Now, one month in, I'm feeling much more "normal". I can eat a meal, feel satisfied and not feel hungry again for a couple of hours.
  6. Thank you. This is reassuring! I live in Canada so I have NO spansih (except maybe a bit from Dora the Explorer!!). I might be able to say it in French but I'm pretty much english only. I have very serious peanut and nut allergies (since I was an infant) and when we travelled to Prague 2 years ago I was able to communicate pretty well with everyone just...
  7. I'm traveling in June to Portugal. Mostly I'll be in Figueria Da Foz but I'll also spend a day of two in Lisbon. Of course, if the volcano decides to act up I might be spending a few days at Heathrow too! I cannot find any info on gluten-free/Celiac for Portugal. I've only been diagnosed since April, so this is all new to me too. Has anyone here travelled...
  8. Back from the doc. It's complicated... My GI's report says "small bowel had the appearance of celiac disease" but the GI biopsy came back "no evidence of celiac" . However it also said... "Sections show 4 biopsies of small bowel mucosa which have normal villous architecture. Brunner's glands are identified in one biopsy. There are a few villi...
  9. The B12 thread got me thinking... This is interesting. My level was 271 but because it was in the "normal" range I though that was fine. I am seeing my family doc on the 12th for follow up as my GI specialist just moved. (Luckily, he diagnosed me before he left!) Should I ask for B12 supplements even though I'm in the normal range? What's the best...
  10. I understand the need for comparison for American friends, but do we really need to insult Smarties like that? Sadly, they were one of the first treats I checked. I will miss my Smarties. And my Mars Bars.
  11. A new question...is it possible that this diet is making me nauseous? I felt really good yesterday all day, and then last evening I got quite queasy. Today, same thing. Felt really good all morning, now really queasy again. It could also be the multi-vit I'm taking I suppose. Maybe I'll cut those out for a bit. And I just went for my first run in 11 days...
  12. Well, I'm back from grocery shopping, and despite spending the GDP for a small country on my groceries, only $45 of it was on "gluten free" specialty products. So I'm happy with that. Part of the reason for the large order is that I've been quite behind in my shopping due to being so ill (and lazy). It feels good to have the cupboards stocked again. I got...
  13. I had my biopsy done yesterday (oooh - what fun that was!) but I was diagnosed based on my bloodwork. So today is Day 1 of my totally gluten free life. I've been almost gluten free for 3-4 days already, but allowed myself a few cheats. No more. I am a bit overwhelmed my how much time it takes to prep my food. Lunches especially. I have a few ideas for...
  14. Thanks for the help. I am appreciating reading through this forum! So the testing for IgA/IgM/IgG show that I'm making enough (or have enough) of these and that I'm not deficient. But what exactly, does that mean? I have been trying to learn about the tests, but honestly, I find it all very confusing! By the time I understand it all I guess I won...
