  1. Thanks JessicaNYC, Kim69 and jdrexler for your replies. I'll speak to my doctor about doing the tests again in my next appointment. I also want to know how I've been doing - I'm 99.9% gluten free and I keep wondering if that 0.1% (possible cross contamination) is going to show in the tests or not. I'm lucky that I don't get any symptoms if I've accidently...
  2. Hi How many of you have gotten the celiac blood tests done again after being gluten free for 6 months (or a year)? My doctor hasn't said anything on this, but I've noticed that some of the forum members have done the tests again. So I'm wondering if it's necessary? Thanks!
  3. LOL.... I wish! Will look into Greek yoghurt... hope it tastes as good as it sounds! Back to my original question - how to avoid the belly fat? Is eating more protein and less carbs the best way? Thanks!
  4. Hi GlutenGladi8or You're right regarding protein - I've got more carbs and less protein in my diet. This is the current diet I'm on: Morning: 7 peeled almonds, 1 dried apricot, 10 black currants (all soaked in water) Breakfast: Two dosas (pancake made from rice flour and ground lentil) with a bowl of low-fat yoghurt. Snack in the middle: Bowl of...
  5. Hi GlutenGladi8or My stats: Female Age: 33 Height: 5 feet, 2.5 inches Weight: 99 pounds (was 90.2 pounds when I was diagnosed with celiac 8 months back) Thanks!
  6. Hi I've been gluten free for 8 months now. Finally started gaining weight around 4 months back, which is great considering I haven't been increasing my calorie intake that much. The problem is that I'm putting on weight on my stomach. So I'm thin all over with a bump on my belly - doesn't look too nice! I've read that we can't control where we put weight...
  7. Thank you all for your replies! I remember reading on the list of safe ingredients on celiac.com that MSG made in USA is safe, and MSG made in other countries may not be gluten free.
  8. Hi I'm still confused whether MSG contains gluten or not - haven't eaten it since I was diagnosed with celiac. I've been reading conflicting reports everywhere. I know MSG is anyways not good for health and hence, never use it. But I'd still like to know if it's safe for celiacs (so that I can safely eat Chinese food if I don't get anything else to eat...
  9. Thanks Takala and detritus!
  10. Thanks sa1937! Can I use guar gum instead of xanthan gum? Also, apart from these two gums, is there any other ingredient that can be used?
  11. Finally managed to get gluten free all purpose flour. But the pack says to add xanthan gum... I'm not sure if I need to add this? I just thought substituting the self-raising flour with gluten-free flour (plus adding extra baking powder) would be fine to bake a cake? Thanks!
  12. Thanks lamegirl, duncan'smom and THernandez. I guess I'll have try which combination works best.
  13. Thank you David. I don't get gluten free all purpose flour here in Dubai. I guess I'll need to combine some other flours to come up with a substitute. I had a look at your blog for baking cakes and they all look absolutely yummy! I hope you come up with an eggless cake receipe in future (I don't mind the egg in cakes, but other family members don't prefer...
  14. Hi I have a wonderful receipe for eggless carrot cake that I bake regularly. The receipe includes self raising flour and baking powder in the list of ingredients. What gluten free flour would be the best substitute for the wheat flour? Thanks!!
  15. Thanks Mike7. While 1 gram of proteins = 4 calories, I believe 2 calories are used up to break down protein in the body? So that will leave us with a net of 2 calories from 1 gram of protein. I do try to excercise for 30 minutes 5-6 times a week. I don't want to do more because I'm still not eating a whole lot. So losing more calories than actually eating...
  16. Thanks RiceGuy. I do eat lentils quite often, and beans sometimes. Peas are on my list of "least favourite vegetable"!! I'll try to include it in my diet (some day)! Thanks for the tip on amaranth. I tried making roti (Indian bread) using amaranth flour and it turned out pretty good - almost like the regular wheat rotis
  17. Thanks missy'smom. I used to eat chicken sometimes before, but have been a vegetarian for quite some time. I'm not sure if I want to re-introduce chicken into my diet.
  18. Thanks for all your replies. So I guess the risk of cross contamination would be for any ice cream since the gluten free flavours would be packed/made in the same facility as the gluten flavours. RiceGuy, the gluten free ice creams look great - too bad they aren't available where I stay:(
  19. Thanks RiceGuy. I haven't had any tests for body fat percentage or bone density. I'm hoping that once my vitamin D levels are normal, the calcium levels will also be in the right range. I would prefer to gain weight at a slower pace. Just trying to figure out what's the best way to increase proteins in my diet - I don't think I want to increase carbs (having...
  20. Hi I've checked the ingredients of my favourite Chocolate chip ice cream from Baskin Robbins and I think it's gluten free. These are the ingredients that I got from their website: Ingredients: cream, nonfat milk, sugar, corn syrup, semi-sweet chocolate chips (sugar, chocolate liquor processed with alkali, butter oil, cocoa butter, soya lecithin), whey...
  21. Thanks WheatChef. I haven't increased the quantity of carbs since going gluten-free. I'm trying to eat healthy fats like nuts, but that's about it. Being a vegetarian and don't drink alcohol really limits my options In fact, I think I'm eating less since I went gluten free. I'm also not keen on eating more processed foods. So still trying to figure out what...
  22. I was diagnosed with Hashimotos in 2003 and with celiac disease in August 2010. I have no idea for how long I've had celiac disease. I had gone to a dermatologist for extreme hairfall and she told me to get my thyroid checked. I was postive for anti thyroid antibodies and have been on thyroxine since then. My hairfall continued through the years. I've always...
  23. Well, I usually go out in the sun around 8am for 10-12 minutes. I stay in Dubai where we have full sun (no clouds) for 350 days of the year! I always thought that going out in the sun between 10am and 3pm would increase the risk of skin cancer?
  24. Thanks In fact, I have been going out in the early morning sun after seeing my results!
  25. Mine is 14.4 (normal range is 30-100). My doctor gave me a shot of vitamin D. I'll get another test done in 3 months and based on the results, he'll decide if I need another shot. He said that it'll take a long time for my vitamin D level to increase if I take oral tablets... he felt it's best to take the shot.
