  1. Thanks for the info. I WILL be reading the cancer and celiac disease. My dad died at 43 from T-cell lymphoma and I am rapidly approaching that age myself!
  2. Sex: female Age: 40 (and 3/4!) Date started gluten free diet: 11/19/03 Suffer from the following on a regular basis since starting treatment: Constipation -no Diarrhoea-only when "glutened" but still have steatorrhea 18 months later Abdominal pain-only when "glutened" Indigestion-no Acid reflux-no Other related problems folate and B12 deficient...
  3. For the first few months of the gluten-free diet, I had a lot of trouble with my blood sugar dropping. Lots of shakiness leading to lethargy. Particularly frightening was the day I couldn't quite get my hands to get food to my mouth. It took me a while to develop a meal pattern that I could count on keeping me comfortable.
  4. Very cool! I was wondering how everyone got their name and history to show up. I knew everyone couldn't be just retyping it over and over!
  5. Stephanie, Wow, you sure know your ingredients! The comment about what they wash the salad with at Outback caught my eye because my husband has been saying for years that whatever they wash the salad with sends him straight into the bathroom so he stopped eating it completely. Same thing about the food at PF Changs. From what they told me they use tamarind...
  6. Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to speed up getting over a gluten ingestion. A few tips I can give you are to: Wash your hands and clean your counters well after preparing any gluten foods Be aware that baking with flour may put flour dust in the air that can contaminate you Try to have a batch of "safe" snacks always on hand so you don...
  7. Anniej55, I don't know if they have told you which of your blood tests are low, but the low blood counts that are commonly found with celiac disease (hemoglobin and hematocrit levels) could by why you are being sent to see the hematologist. They are just trying to be thorough. I understand how you feel about the diet. I was so afraid that I was dying...
  8. I work for a GI group (not a nurse or a doctor so this is not medical advice) and all those things are very common and not any cause for you to worry. They may give you an acid blocker or suppressor if they think the gastritis is causing you pain. You also might have to have the Schatzki's ring dilated from time to time if you notice that you have any difficulty...
  9. I don't know what area you live in but you should check with your local hospitals to see if they offer any sort of "clinic" for patients who are unable to pay for healthcare. They may call it an "ambulatory care clinic" or "free clinic" or perhaps another name. In the area I live, the larger hospitals offer these services. You may also want to check with...
  10. I don't know anything about herbals or alternative (traditional) medicines, this is just an FYI on magnesium. Magnesium oxide or elemental magnesium can have a laxative effect on you (does Citrate of Magnesia or Milk of Magnesia sound familiar?). Most likely that caused your distress unless you are allergic to citric acid and that compounded your misery.
  11. In the beginning of your gluten-free life, the fatigue will vary. It was very cyclical for me in the beginning as well, but the longer you are gluten-free and the more time your body (intestinal lining) has time to heal, the more you should find a return of your energy. Just be patient and rest when you need to. Eat what is healthy for you and keep up the...
  12. You can also pick up gluten in other unexpected ways. 7 months ago, my employer was building a new office suite and when I visited the site to see how work was progressing, everything was fine until the walls started going up. After that, every time I went, I got a terrible headache, became nauseaus, my joint aches came back in full force: back, hands, elbows...
