I'm also a "recovering" vegetarian (ironically went back to eating meat about a year ago after a 15 year stint as a vegetarian, because I was starting to feel that my diet was too grain heavy, and imbalanced - before I knew a thing about Celiac!). Anyway... so I'm new to the meat cooking thing... can you just put raw meat in those packets and they will be...

Great idea, thanks! I used to love doing this when we went camping... it was so convenient to have little foil packets made up that we could just throw on the bbq.

Thanks, yeah, I would definitely bring my own food! But was having visions of him taking my perfectly gluten-free food and putting it on his gluteny bbq! The camp stove sounds perfect. Plus I just like the idea of being in charge of my food from start to finish... if I had my own little stove, people might be less likely to mess with my food.

So we were out of town the other day, and stopped in to visit some friends. It was just a quick visit, I had something to drop off, so we didn't stay long. (It was lunch time, and I was trying to make sure they didn't try to feed us!). They did offer the kids an apple, which I thought was fine, until I noticed he was cutting the apple with the knife and handing...

ARCHIVED How Do You Deal With The Waiting?
Irishgirl76 replied to Irishgirl76's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, after getting ready to pack the kids up and head to the GI's office, they called me. lol. She said he finally responded to her email (that she sent him a week ago!), and all it said was that my biopsy showed "mild changes that could be consistent with Celiac". She said that was all the email said, and asked if he had said anything to me when he spoke... -

Good idea - if I don't hear from them on Monday I will go down there and ask for them. -

Thanks Cara, Yes, I will be gluten-free either way (our home is already gluten-free), but it's still driving me batty to not have a firm diagnosis. I went to see my GP for a separate matter this past Friday, and she asked if I'd heard from the Gastroenterologist yet. I said that I hadn't, so she had a quick look at the results she had received, and said... -
I had my gastroscopy 2 1/2 weeks ago and am STILL waiting on results! I had a slightly positive TtG, and the lab report said that it was "essentially diagnostic of Celiac Disease", but of course I have to have a biopsy to confirm diagnosis. My daughter is unquestionably Celiac (her bloodwork results were off the chart, and she had marked villous blunting...

ARCHIVED Do You Make People Wash Their Hands?
Irishgirl76 replied to Irishgirl76's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Thanks, good to know. I was also curious because they have children, who will be playing with my kids' toys... would that change anything for you? Just asking because this is all new to me (my daughter and I have both just been diagnosed within the past few weeks), and I really have no idea how careful I need to be. Thanks again, Alissa -
ARCHIVED Do You Make People Wash Their Hands?

I have some guests coming over today, and it's the first time I've really had people over since my diagnosis (other than close family members and my boyfriend). Just curious - do you ask people to wash their hands when they come in your house so they don't "glutenize" stuff? It seems like it would be really awkward to do that, but might be a good idea to... -

ARCHIVED Iga Deficient, What Tests?
Irishgirl76 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello, I have a friend who wants to have her son tested but he is IgA deficient (apparently she had him screened as an infant due to signs of Celiac, but he turned up IgA deficient and the doctor would do no further testing). Anyway, he's now 8 and she wants to have him re-tested. Are there tests that will work in spite of an IgA deficiency, or is biopsy... -
ARCHIVED How Long Until Distended Belly Goes Away?
Irishgirl76 posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hello, My daughter has been gluten-free now for almost 2 weeks (will be 2 weeks tomorrow). She is still complaining of tummy pain. Today she complained several times so I checked her belly, and it is still very distended, and rock hard. Is this something that just takes time to dissipate? Or should I suspect she is getting glutened? Or maybe some other... -
ARCHIVED Are Docs Skeptical Of Celiac Dx Without Biopsy?
Irishgirl76 replied to Irishgirl76's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
That's good to know... thanks. Although now that the biopsy is done (traumatic as it was), I'm glad we have the results and no one can refute them. -
ARCHIVED How Much Acommodation Should We Expect?
Irishgirl76 replied to Irishgirl76's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I was thinking more along the lines of the wooden cutting board, wooden spoons etc. Because they're porous and since we can't use a cutting board previously used for gluten I assumed that washing them in a sink with gluteny stuff (or with a gluteny cloth) was probably not a good idea? -

Thanks, guys. I found a sneaky way to give her a gift. When I was out shopping for new kitchen stuff I was looking to replace my baking stone (I used that thing for EVERYTHING!!). I was looking for a square one but the first store I went to only had round ones, so I bought it. Then I stopped at another store and found a square one, but didn't have time to... -
ARCHIVED Are Docs Skeptical Of Celiac Dx Without Biopsy?
Irishgirl76 replied to Irishgirl76's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Just a quick update... I got my daughter's biopsy results this morning and they were, indeed, positive. She said the villous atrophy was "moderate to marked". Is it weird that I am happy about an "official" diagnosis? lol. 10 more days until my own endoscopy, and until I can get rid of the gluten and start my recovery. Yaay!! -

So my sweet, wonderful sister wants to make her home as safe as possible for my daughter (and for me also, I suppose!). She says she does not want me to worry when I'm there. She is gluten-free by choice (not Celiac but sensitive to gluten), and is encouraging the rest of her family to do the same, for health reasons (her hubby & 3 teenaged daughters... -
ARCHIVED Eating Gluten Without Contaminating House?
Irishgirl76 replied to Irishgirl76's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
lol - I did the same thing! Hit the fasr food drive thru the other day (something I would normally never do!) but I figured hey, why not. When I'm home I have to sneak the wheat, as my kids are only 7, 5, and 3 and don't understand why I'm still eating it but they can't. -

Thanks, guys. Today I bought some Shreddies, Triscuits and pretzels. lol. Stuff I would normaly never buy (not big on processed foods!) but hey, you do what you've gotta do. I'll be glad when the biopsy is done! -
ARCHIVED Eating Gluten Without Contaminating House?
Irishgirl76 posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello, My daughter had her endoscopy yesterday after her very positive bloodwork a couple weeks ago. I started her gluten-free diet immediately, and have already de-glutenized the house. The problem is that my endoscopy is still 3 weeks away so I have to keep eating gluten. Anyone have any suggestions as to the best way to do that without contaminating... -

Hi there, My 7-year old daughter had an appointment with her pediatrician yesterday as I believe she has Asperger's Syndrome (which the doctor agreed on, and gave her the diagnosis). When she was examining her, she said "did I see in her file that she was being screened for Celiac?". I said yes, that she'd had the bloodwork done, and it came back positive... -

More questions (as I make a mental list in my head...)...I'm going to be looking for gluten-free make-up. What about things like make-up brushes? Can I just wash them or should I replace them? Make-up bag? (it's not washable & has make-up residue in it). Thanks. :0) -

I did get rid of all the wooden stuff (spoons, rolling pins, etc). I didn't have any tupperware as I had long since stopped using plastic for food storage. However I switched to pyrex food storage containers, which have plastic lids. Think the lds are ok?
