  1. How long have you been following the gluten-free diet? I know I became lactose intolerant shortly before I got my actual diagnosis of celiac disease, but after a few months on the gluten-free diet, I was able to eat dairy again with no problem...perhaps this could be true in your case even if you are only gluten intolerant or something like that?

  2. Well having a diagnosis must be a huge relief!!! But yes, learning how to deal with that diagnosis is a whole other story!! It does get easier though, I promise!

I personally found that reading books really helped me, one of my favorites is called: Against the Grain, it is a great book written from a personal perspective that made me feel not so alone - although I did not have this great website to consult!

    Good luck to you...

  3. Hi James -

I am so sorry to hear all the health problems with your wife and son! What a struggle.... Now, granted I'm not a doctor, but has your wife experimented with the gluten-free diet to see if she feels better? I know from this forum (and experience), that sometimes your body is the best indicator.... because many people have had inconclusive test results but responded extremely well to the diet.... Also, I know autism and crohn's disease have high correlations with celiac disease, has your son been tested for it?

I know it's hard, I struggled for years with health problems (as I know most of the people on this site have!) before they found out the true source... depression, vertigo, IBS, migraines, (and those are just the things they actually diagnosed me with, not to mention the fatigue, nausea, etc) and just plain getting sick all the time because my immune system was fed up with everything!! I also had some sort of skin problem where I would get all these open sores that would not heal, they finally (!!!) cleared up after my diagnosis, and to this day no doctor is able to tell me what it was, though I have lots of scars from it!

One more thing - it almost sounds like you feel your wife's doctor is not very compassionate? Perhaps, you might consider finding a new one who understands and believes your wife has a problem? But maybe I misunderstood that comment?

Good luck - I will keep you guys in my prayers!

  4. I have a book called Against the Grain that has a bunch of pages in the back that describes the celiac diet requirements in tons of languages....I have found it a great resource!! The book itself is also AWESOME!! I read it right after I was diagnosed and still refer back to it often....I highly recommend it...

  5. I hope you and your family had a great trip to Las Vegas.....I am going there this weekend and was wondering if you (or anyone else!) could offer some suggestions for eating out on the strip? I will surely check out the hard rock hotel....

    Thanks,

    Laurie

  6. Hi all!

I am going to be traveling to Honolulu and Maui, Hawaii soon and wanted to see if any of you guys have suggestions for getting around there in the "restaurant scene." I will, of course, be bringing lots of edible goodies of my own and will research stores ahead of time....Any info would be greatly appreciated!

  7. Hi Judy -

I just registered for the forum today and noticed you are looking for a good sandwich bread...the best I have found is a bread mix by "The Gluten Free Pantry," called "Favorite Sandwich Bread." You have to make it yourself but it's the closest thing that I have found to real bread and is really pretty good! :D

I know you posted awhile ago, so I hope it helps!

I'm not sure where you live, but I am able to purchase it at Whole Foods Grocery Store, and I believe they have a website.
