ARCHIVED Positive Dietary Response In Toddler!
Tony'sMom posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I am thrilled that we are finally getting some answers My youngest son was diagnosed with diabetes in July. On Thanksgiving weekend he was ill with a stomach bug that took him a long time to get over. Since then he's had constant issues- loose stool, really foul smelling, distended boated belly, poor growth, etc. That immediately sent up red flags... -
ARCHIVED Please Refresh My Memory.
Tony'sMom replied to Tony'sMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yep- both boys were diagnosed at age 1yr. Our endo was pretty surprised to see us in the E.R. The baby is so much like his brother that they may as well be clones. They look the same, have the same medical issues, and even have the same goofy personality -
ARCHIVED Please Refresh My Memory.
Tony'sMom posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi everyone. I think my little one may be showing signs of celiac but I can't remember how it presents in infants. My older son was diagnosed at age 3 so his symptoms were easier for me to recognize. Some history- my 1 1/2 yr old was diagnosed with diabetes after his 1st birthday. He had the stomach flu a month ago and since then has been miserable... -

ARCHIVED Can Infants Get Diabetes?
Tony'sMom replied to KayJay's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi kayjay. Diabetes runs in my family so I was fortunate enough to recognize some of the signs. Tony started out by getting a little thin looking. Looking back, I can see the signs about a month before he was hospitalized. He was really scrawny- that's how he got his nickname Bones- and just looked tired and ill. I kept trying to get him in to see the... -
ARCHIVED Can Infants Get Diabetes?
Tony'sMom replied to KayJay's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, they can develop diabetes. My son was 12 months old when he was diagnosed. He was in DKA when he entered the hospital with blood sugars of 600+. Please have her tested if you are concerned. My son symptoms at that age where- extreme thirst ( he would sit at the sink and cry for more water) peeing through his diapers at night, large weight loss, fatigue... -

ARCHIVED Will Gluten Make Blood Sugars Go Up In A Child With Both Diabetes And Celiac?
Tony'sMom replied to Laura--G's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Yes, gluten makes my son's blood sugars rise. In fact, he had a gluten accident at school on Tuesday and was in DKA yesterday It takes a couple of days for his blood sugars to stabalize afterwards. -
I've been doing a lot of reading in the last couple of months and seem to be getting some conflicting info. Some sources say that a little contamination isn't harmful while others are adamant that it is harmful. I try to be very careful with my son's food- he has his own butter, pb, jelly, etc. But I worry that he might be getting gluten via cc and I wouldn...

ARCHIVED Help I Don't Know What To Do!
Tony'sMom replied to jaybirdsmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son's inital bloodwork and biopsy were inconclusive but both genetic markers are positive. He was diagnosed with celiac and we started the diet. Fast forward a couple of years and we did a gluten challange. Why? Because of the inconclusive test results. So we did a couple of months off the diet. Big mistake, in my opinion. My son started losing weight... -
ARCHIVED Birthday Parties And Family Get Togethers.
Tony'sMom replied to shai76's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I don't want to sound rude but these are not the type of people I would want my kids around. Making fun of disabled people? Yuck. I know how difficult it can be ( and I do know) but you need to tell your family to back off. Do you want them to mock your son for his celiac disease? Because if they will make fun of his dad then they will eventually make fun... -
ARCHIVED Birthday Parties And Family Get Togethers.
Tony'sMom replied to shai76's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
What we've always done is make cupcakes ahead of time and freeze them. That way when a party comes along we are ready Bring him some safe snacks/drinks and he should be fine. Tell the other guests that you have food for him and not to give him anything without your approval. We've always been very matter of fact about Celiac disease. Our son knows what... -
ARCHIVED For Those With Gluten Tolerant & Intolerant Family Members
Tony'sMom replied to a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Right now our house is mixed but I"m leaning towards making most things gluten free- breads, crackers, etc. I don't think I could do a 100% gluten free household, my oldest is autistic and eats certain foods that I wouldn't be able to replace. I also have a daughter who requires a different diet altogether. I wish I could go gluten free, it would make... -

Have you considered speaking to a dietician/nutritionist? I know that I found them to be very helpful when I needed info on 2 seperate specialty diets. They helped me plan and organize so that I wasn't going nuts at every meal. I hope you can get this figured out soon. Good luck. -

Tony'sMom replied to mikepattonsgirl's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hello Kelly. I'm sorry to hear that your son isn't feeling so well. I have son with autism and years ago I tried the gluten-free/CF diet. I didn't do a good job at it and gave up after seeing no benefit. I'm now going to try again since I have another son who has celiac. Give Gluten-free Casein-free.com a look- they should have some good resources about... -
ARCHIVED Type 1 Diabetes & Celiac
Tony'sMom replied to Cam's Mom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hello and welcome My son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 1 year. When he was 3 he was diagnosed with celiac disease. It took about 6 weeks or so before most of the symptoms went away. I found that the better we were with the diet, the better the blood sugars were. My son has been pumping now for almost 3 years and we love it. His... -
ARCHIVED New Problems With Daughter....
Tony'sMom replied to taweavmo3's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son was diagnosed at a very young age but his symptoms were excessive thirst ( he would crawl to the sink and cry for water), wetting through double diapers, extreme tiredness, irritability. Eventually it got to the point of vomiting and lethargy and large amounts of weight loss. I took him to an emergancy clinic because his doc at the time wouldn't see... -

ARCHIVED Other Allergy Testing?
Tony'sMom replied to skipper30's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son was tested for other allergies and came back positive to a ton of stuff. Most of it is environmental but he is also allergic to soy, cod, watermelon and tomato. I don't think it would hurt to check for other allergens.
