  1. Most doctors wouldn't prescribe a gluten-free diet until a child has both positive bloodwork and a positive endoscopy. They explain that the diet is strict, expensive, lifelong and that it's unfair to put a child on the diet without a full diagnosis. In my opinion, these doctors are also waiting for your child's body to get sick enough to pass their tests...
  2. Thanks, Fiddle-Faddle! I completely agree with you about allergies not being the only food-related cause of issues like Eczema. Yes, my allergist thought that Celiac wouldn't cause it, but I know it's worth a try. Appreciate your offer of assistance re: foods. My son and husband were diagnosed about 3 years ago... so I'm pretty up-to-date on things. ...
  3. Fiddle-Faddle - how many weeks did it take for your son's skin to start to show signs of improvement? My husband and son both have celiac disease. Now, my 2 1/2 year old daughter has persistent eczema (4 months now, bleeding, scratching, etc..), but no apparent GI or growth issues, like my son had. We had her tested for Celiac recently and probably...
  4. My son and husband ate gluten free pizza at Uno's on the Upper West Side in New York City today. My husband said that it was really good -- for him that meant better than the Amy's frozen pizza that he enjoys -- and my son (who is incredibly picky) liked it, too. For both of them, it was the FIRST time to eat pizza at a restaurant since going gluten free...
  5. Yes, I think somebody should start another thread to keep this at the top of the forum. Wellshire Farms had a "statement" on their website for less than a week - there was a link right at the top of their home page -- by last weekend it was gone. They are just hoping that this whole problem will go away, but let's not let that happen. It's not fair to...
  6. I, too, am upset. My son has eaten these since day 1 after his diagnosis -- a few times a week. He's such a picky eater and will eat these - even though they are high in fat, etc.. His growth has not been great since being diagnosed 2 1/2 years ago... maybe eating a food with 200 ppm a few times a week (not on occasion) could be the cause. His constant...
  7. We have the same problem with our two year old son. We use Miralax when it gets bad, but we've also gotten him to like Lara apple bars - they have walnuts, raisins, dates, apples, etc... If he eats a bar a day (or 2), it seems to really keep things on track. Hummus also is a good snack... he'll eat the roasted red pepper kind (minus the chunks of red pepper...
  8. Yes, that's definitely my plan... but I want to have a backup on hand if for some reason we need it.
  9. Hi, My son and husband both have Celiac Disease. We're expecting baby #2 very, very soon. I'm planning to breastfeed for at least a year and follow a gluten free diet myself (my son's gastro recommended this). But, I want to have a backup formula for supplementing and/or emergencies. The CSA gluten free book shows that Enfamil products are gluten...
  10. I've had somewhat similar experiences...my son was not growing well and he always had mushy poops. After pos blood tests at about 16 or 17 months and an iffy biopsy, we started the gluten free diet. Despite him being the pickiest eater and not gaining a ton of weight (he's now 26 mos and about 24 pounds), his growth in height has been dramatic. At...
  11. I don't have Celiac disease, but my son and husband do.... and I'm expecting our second child soon. My son's pediatric gastro, who is part of Columbia Presbyterian's Celiac Disease Center in NYC, recommended that I breastfeed our next baby and follow a gluten free diet while breastfeeding. And, she recommended starting to introduce gluten around 5 months...
  12. My son was diagnosed last spring and has been gluten-free since. He got up crying this morning and threw up shortly after. We're not sure if he accidentally got some gluten in him -- or if it's just a stomach bug. He has a low fever today.... do your celiac kids get fevers when they are reacting to gluten? Or, not? Thanks for your help!
  13. My son and husband were both diagnosed recently. It started with a similar situation -- failure to thrive in our 1 year old son. We did our first celiac disease test on my son through Quest labs at approx. 15 months and it came back equivocal -- not negative -- not positive. Our pediatrician said test again in a year or two. But, we went to a gastro...
  14. I would really think about starting a gluten free diet immediately. It cannot hurt your son in any way. Have your GI do blood tests through Prometheus lab tomorrow at the appointment -- do both the celiac panel and the gene test. I'm sure that GI's do emergency endoscopies as well (normally it takes a few weeks to schedule -- at least in my area). ...
  15. Thanks, everyone. I guess I should have mentioned that we are all gluten-free at home -- which is probably 95% of my meals. I guess it's that other 5% that I'm thinking about... can I eat what I want at a wedding, party, etc... after I get pregnant? Or, will any gluten impact the fetus like it would a celiac? I've been tested twice -- once very recently...
  16. My husband and son (18 months) were both recently diagnosed with Celiac disease. Doctors have told us it's unlikely that our son was born with Celiac b/c it's an autoimmune disease, but we've been contemplating the idea of me (the non-celiac wife) going gluten free during our next pregnancy... we're not pregnant yet. I realize that it probably sounds...
  17. Thank you all so much for your advice and experiences! Based on all of your feedback, it sounds like I should wait a few months. It's been almost three weeks now and he's still having slightly mushy poops, but they are better. Right after going gluten-free, his poops were significantly better -- not mushy at all. Within a few days, they were mushy...
  18. Hi, Everyone. My son has been Gluten free for a week now. He's 18 months old and ALWAYS had mushy poops. His main other symptom was slow growth. We're still awaiting his biopsy results, but will be gluten-free for a long time even if it's equivocal in order to see if his growth improves... thus proving it is celiac (his father has been "fully" diagnosed...
  19. I'm pretty new to the forum and have been reading through a lot of people's posts re: problems with the tests for young children. Just thought that I'd share my experiences with my son's testing. Personally, I think children't tests should be handled by a lab like Prometheus, which specializes in celiac. And, if an initial test is invalid, equivocal...
  20. Thank you all so much for your thoughts about the biopsy... we actually ended up having our son's procedure moved up and went ahead with it. It was yesterday at Children's Hospital of New York (Columbia Presbyterian). We were definitely "on the fence" about the whole thing, but ended up deciding that it was best to do it now -- if we were ever going to...
  21. My son's bloodwork for celiac (through Prometheus labs) was positive. He has positive AGA IgG, positive TTG IgA, positive EMA IgA and negative AGA IgG. My husband has also recently been "fully" diagnosed - bloodwork and biopsy. We have a biopsy scheduled for my son in a few weeks. All of our doctors recommend it in order to give him a full celiac...
